Hinchey only won 52-48% in 2010. The handwriting is on the wall:

I’ll drink to his retirement but can a Republican win the seat?

I hope Mrs Hinchey gets the help she needs. I hope Maurice stays out of office for good and retires completely from DC. He is rotten. He is an awful man, in a city of awful men.

It all depends on how this district is redrawn. The way it's configured now it' about 120 miles long by less than 1 mile wide in some areas. It covers the urban "paradises" of Kingston, Poughkeepsie and most of Newburgh, SUNY New Paltz and the artsy-fartsy communities of Woodstock and Hurley, streching in a narrow band across the Catskills to encompass Binghamptown as well as Cornell U and Ithaca College. In other words this whackjob could've been congressman for life.

I think that redistricters will take advantage of Hinchey’s retirement to parcel off that monstrosity of a district among several CDs. Maybe they’ll give all of Buffalo to Brian Higgins and compensate Rochester’s Louise Slaughter (whose CD takes in part of Buffalo) by giving her Ithaca (personally, I’d love it if they packed every Dem precinct from Rochester, Syracuse, Ithaca and the Finger Lakes into a single district, leaving surrounding CDs comfortably Republican).

How could this happen? The law:
As of August 15, 2010, New York state requires a person sentenced for Driving While Intoxicated have an ignition interlock device installed on any vehicle they own or operate, and the driver have an “ignition interlock” restriction added to their driver license.[9]
Rules for thee, not for me?
(yea I see she pleaded down)

Facing retirement with him may be what sent her off the rails.

Good riddance. I feared Hinchey from the very first time he announced his run for Congress due to his very socialist attitudes, and my belief that in this congressional district he would be impossible to defeat. My fears proved accurate, unfortunately.
I hear it is quite likely that this ridiculous gerrymander is going to be the “sacrificed” dem district now during reapportionment.
