The Gingrich campaign launched a preemptive strike as news spread that ABC plans to broadcast a potentially damaging interview with Newt Gingrichs second ex-wife on Thursday just two days before Saturdays crucial South Carolina primary.
Gingrichs daughters (from his first marriage) Kathy Lubbers and Jackie Cushman came to their fathers defense in a letter released by his presidential campaign.
The failure of a marriage is a terrible and emotional experience for everyone involved. Anyone who has had that experience understands it is a personal tragedy filled with regrets, and sometimes differing memories of events, the daughters said in the letter addressed to ABC News Leadership.
We will not say anything negative about our fathers ex-wife. He has said before, privately and publicly, that he regrets any pain he may have caused in the past to people he loves, the letter said.
The daughters also said the former House Speaker intends to stay on message, suggesting one thing he will not be talking about in South Carolina is the ABC interview.

Hillary wants to run against Romney, because he can’t beat her.
Clinton operatives are working in the Romney camp.
Now Newt’s wife turns on him.
Connect the dots.
Good.
Let’s revisit Monica, shall we? And his Missus is now Sec of State. Ain’t that grand?
His attacks on Free Enterprise are not in line with Conservative thought.
How in the heck is it preemptive if it is a response?

Imagine a puzzled Scooby-Doo shaking his head and saying,”Huhhhh?”.
Newt Gingrich is the Winston Churchill of our time.
Right. Explain “Contract With America” if Gingrich isn’t a conservative.
Illogical people with no common sense or understanding of politics dwell on both sides of the aisle, don’t they?
“Newt needs to bow out and endorse Santorum. He’s not conservative in any shape or manner...he’s a populist.”
And Santorum is? He supported No Child Left Behind and just about every big government initiative during the Bush years.
No one in this race is a true, full blooded conservative. One of these guys will just be a space filler until new crop of young conservative office holders (Rubio, Jindal, Lee, Walker, etc) step in to fill the void.
Because the interview has not yet happened.
Newts got some serious skeletons.
He led the charge on impeaching BJC while he himself was getting BJs from his mistress.
It’s going to be an issue.
Thompson was one of the sane ones that said, this is about perjury alone.
When did Newt attack free enterprise?
Surely you know the candidates do not control what superpacs do.
It’s pre-emptive because his ex wife’s interview hasn’t yet been aired on television.
I’ve been backing Santorum, but I hope like hell that Newt doesn’t back down here.
Aren’t all the “sealed” accusations in a Republican politician’s divorce sent directly to the DNC by the courts anyway...
Nonsense.
God bless Newt and his children. He has been viciously attacked by the media, called “unstable”, been hit hard by the moderators on his personal life during one of the former debates, lied about, smeared and he is still standing. Newt has strength, courage and true grit. Americans are concerned about the economy, the UN, debt ceiling, Obamacare, activist judges ...not about something that took place 16 yrs or so ago..move ON with the urgent matters facing this country.
The news has been out for YEARS
All Newt needs to do is address this ONE time: ONE: ‘Well, that’s my ex-wife’, say NOTHING else, and say ‘I’VE ALREADY ADDRESSED THAT’ any and every time anyone asks him about it.
Bury it, Newt. The women behind you already know this, and the men behind you will NOT respect you if you allow it ANY traction.
Address once, bury and ignore.
Surely you are following the news. Newt has been preaching the evils of private enterprise and capital. He was a lobbyist for the GSEs so he is what his record says he is.
