Please Thank President Obama
National Resource Defense Committee ^ | 1/18/12 | Beinecke

Let’s face it: Big Oil is used to getting its way. But not any more.

President Obama has just rejected a permit for the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline -- a project that promised riches for the oil giants and an environmental disaster for the rest of us.

His decision represents a victory of historic proportions for NRDC and hundreds of thousands of committed activists like you who have waged an uphill, years-long fight against one of the most nightmarish fossil fuel projects of our time.

Please thank the President right away for his game-changing decision.

But get ready to keep the pressure on the Obama Administration -- because Big Oil is going to fight back hard and fast.

Why? Because this was a prime-time fight. The oil giants made sure of that.

First, they had their Congressional boosters put the President to an election-year test by forcing him to decide the pipeline’s fate within 60 days. Then, the oil lobby itself rolled out its biggest PR guns to get the job done.

The head of the American Petroleum Institute sent the White House a very public and blatant warning: Approve the Keystone XL or face "huge political consequences."

Big Oil put all its political capital on the line -- and a ton of money, too -- AND LOST!

They lost because millions of Americans -- including you -- stood up and said, We’re done with fossil fuel schemes that destroy our land, poison our water and wreak havoc with our climate so that oil companies can make out like bandits.

And because Big Oil lost, this is not the end of the fight. This is the beginning of the real battle for America’s energy future.

That battle will be fought in Congress, where Representatives who’ve collected $12 million from the oil & gas industry over the past two years are sure to try to raise Keystone from the dead . . . it will be fought in British Columbia, where the oil giants want to ram a tar sands pipeline and supertanker traffic through the heart of the Spirit Bear’s coastal rainforest home . . . it will be fought in the Polar Bear Seas, where the Interior Department has given tentative approval for Shell to begin drilling this summer . . . and it will be fought state by state where NRDC is championing clean energy alternatives to a grim, pollution-filled future of coal-fired power plants, environmentally destructive fracking and offshore oil spills.

I know you’ll stand with us shoulder to shoulder in the critical weeks, months and years ahead. We need your kind of never-say-die commitment -- the kind that killed the Keystone XL and just made our collective future a little bit brighter. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Frances Beinecke President

P.S. Please be sure to thank President Obama. It’s so important that the White House feel overwhelming support for taking this stand against Big Oil, because we’ll soon be asking them to face down the oil giants again.

Where were these “millions of Americans” (probably most not even close to where the pipe line would be) that asked for the pipe line to be nixed?

My gosh, these folks can only think to demonize their opponents. When they all stop driving “big oil” fueled cars, flying “big oil” fueled jets etc., then maybe they have a non hypocritical leg to stand on.

You can clear out the pre-pasted text and fill in something like “thanks for nothing you idiot” — but no way to change the subject line, and of course nobody will bother to read the bodies of the email.

Also it tries to figure out who you were before. They thought I was some joker in Seattle, Washington.

Thank the son of a b.... for destroying this country? How the sorry bastard ever got to be president is a mystery and I live for the day when we will run Obama’s sorry ass back to Kenya. The Marxist SOB is an abomination and likely demonically possessed and an agent of the anti-christ. The worst president of this republic and should be tried for treason and shot by a firing squad after he is found guilty. And these are the kindest words I can say about Obama.

Thanks...dick.

It's great how you just made sure that gas prices are going to go up and that more jobs, that we need, are not going to be available.

Thanks for the reminder that you are a completely out of touch, out of your depth, mistake.

The Republic will survive you Mr. President. I just hope to God we survive the people who were dumb enough to vote for you and the fools who want to vote for you again.

Dear Mr. 0bama,

Now I expect to be paying $5.00 gal for gas (to get to MY JOB), probably before summer. As a result, I don’t know if I’ll have enough money left to heat and cool my home or buy food for my family. I may have to quit working and go on public assistance. Thanks a lot!

Signed,

Joe Workingman

Let's face it, the NRDC is an anti-American organizations, all the members of which belong at the end of a rope for trying to starve and freeze to death the working people as well as the unemployed.

How the sorry bastard ever got to be president is a mystery

Nancy Pelosi signed the document confirming his eligibility. Hawaii refused to confirm him.

Question is, did she confirm without verify. If so, did she break the law?

I pray you are right that the Republic will indeed survive this Marxist bastard. There are days that I wonder.

...a project that promised riches for the oil giants and an environmental disaster for the rest of us.

That was enough.

One of these days I'm going to start a company named "Big Oil" and sue these sh*tbirds every time they say something bad about it.

Dear President Obama.

I wanted to thank you for stopping the Key Stone Pipeline from polluting our earth. By ending this lame brained idea, you not only prevented 20,000 jobs in the dirty oil producing industry, you also slowed the monster of this resource extracting economy that has no respect for mother earth.

We in the hand made candle, organic vegetable and tie died shirt industry salute you. You have inspired all of who cherish the planet to breath a little bit less to reduce our Co2 footprint.

If only the whole nation could be turned into a vast national park, free from the intrusion of those who would rape the land for greed, then maybe your vision of a transformed American will come forth!

Yours for a greener planet, Fawn Rainforest.

A caller on Fox news radio Tom Sullivan said that Venezuela benefits which means that Soros benefits. If the pipeline would have happened then the Koch brothers would have benefited. If true then it is all political and I’m jaded.

Here Canada, our neighbor, our friend and ally was trying to help the United States with a pipeline to deliver oil for the nation’s transportation needs and provide jobs for American workers. We slapped them in the face and told them to take their carbon crap somewhere else. Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper was “profoundly dissappointed” in Obama’s decision. Harper has scheduled a trip to China next month to work out arrangements to ship the oil to them.

The correct name of this organization is the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

According to David Horowitz’s Discover the Networks, the NRDC “receives financial backing from Pew Charitable Trusts, the Tides Foundation, the Bauman Family Foundation, the Beldon Fund, the Blue Moon Fund, the Bullitt Foundation, the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the Columbia Foundation, the Compton Foundation, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the Educational Foundation of America, the Energy Foundation, the Vira I. Heinz Endowment, the Heinz Family Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Joyce Foundation, the J.M. Kaplan Fund, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the New York Times Company Foundation, George Soros’s Open Society Institute, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Prospect Hill Foundation, the Public Welfare Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Scherman Foundation, the Surdna Foundation, the Turner Foundation, and many others.”

From the same source: “In a joint effort in 1989 with Fenton Communications, a Washington-based public relations firm headed by David Fenton, NRDC claimed that growers who treated apples with the pesticide Alar were creating a serious health threat to consumers. For five months, NRDC flooded media outlets with accusations that Alar was a dangerous carcinogen. Eventually the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concluded that the fear campaign was unfounded, explaining that a person would have to eat 50,000 pounds of Alar-treated apples per day over the course of a lifetime in order to ingest enough of the substance to develop cancer.

Apple growers lost some $250 million as a result of the campaign, with many smaller growers being forced out of business. NRDC fared much better. According to an internal memo written by David Fenton and later published in the Wall Street Journal: ‘We designed [the anti-Alar campaign] so that revenue would flow back to the Natural Resources Defense Council from the public, and we sold a book about pesticides through a 900 number and the Donahue Show. And to date there has been $700,000 in net revenue from it.’

In the late 1990s, NRDC was an outspoken booster of Enron Corporation, which has since become synonymous with corporate malfeasance. For its support of environmentalist legislation like the Kyoto Protocol (a tactical move by the company aimed at eliminating its competition in the energy industry), Enron earned the praise of NRDC and other environmentalist groups. NRDC’s Ralph Cavanagh said in 1997, “On environmental stewardship, our experience is that you can trust Enron. When Enron later declared bankruptcy, NRDC lawyer Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., in a December 2003 Rolling Stone article titled “Crimes Against Nature,” assailed the Bush administration’s energy plan as a sop to corporate interests and as proof, cited the administration’s alleged ties to Enron CEO Kenneth Lay.”
