From Public Policy Polling, this is really bad news for Rick Perry -- although at this point it cannot be unexpected:
Rick Perry's Presidential campaign is doing about as bad in Texas now as it is everywhere else in the country. When PPP last polled the state in September he was at 49%, leading Mitt Romney by 39 points. Now Perry's support has declined by 31 points, leaving him in 3rd place at 18%. Mitt Romney at 24% and Newt Gingrich at 23% lead the way with Rick Santorum at 15%, Ron Paul at 12%, and Buddy Roemer at 0% rounding out the field behind Perry.
What might be most shocking on this poll is that Romney edges Perry 46-45 if Republican voters had to pick just between the two of them. When we asked that identical question four monhs ago Perry led Romney 72-18. There's been a 55 point shift in Romney's direction.

I think he’s been running for the veep slot, but if he can’t reliably pull Texas, then that’s a problem. However, I think he could pull Texas from the bottom of the ticket.
This is not to say that I think there’s anything reliable about a poll.
If the Republican candidates for President
were just Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum,
who would you vote for?
Mitt Romney........... .42%
Rick Santorum....... .45%
Same question.
Mitt Romney........... .46%
Rick Perry .............. .45%
Not sure ................. . 9%
“Curious about your guys opinions on this!”
A prophet is not always loved in his hometown or home county or home state or home country.
Santorum is the only one beating Romney. Santorum beats Romney in the head to head 45-42.
Why? Because Santorum is acceptable to both Newt and Perry supporters.
So, quite frankly, Santorum is our best hope to win.
Same question:
Mitt Romney........... .43%
Newt Gingrich ........ .42%
Paul, btw, gets absolutely crushed by Romney in TX.
People outside TX like Perry because they don’t see how things work here. I’d peg Texas’ success more on the GOP takeover of the legislature several years ago, with Perry helping by being able to sign good laws.
Tea party approval.
Santorum 50-38-12
Gingrich 49-40-11
Perry 44-42-`5
Santorum comes in first among the Tea Party.
It reminds me of the debates about Palin v that mess up there. She was a governor. He said he “ran a campaign.” Perry has been governor over 10 years. Romeny is a one-termer. And what IS this big business career? It hink he’s full of hot air. I do not like him, this Romeny character.
Not what? A non-factor or stupid?
Romney/Gingrich
Republicans:
40 Romney
46 Gingrich
Santorum also has the highest favorability among ‘very conservative’ folks - roughly 41 percent of this electorate in TX, at 72 percent favorability.
Newt’s getting killed among women.
Mitt Romney
Newt Gingrich
44%
39%
Santorum, btw get’s the best split 47-41 among Men vs Romney.
I think it’s pretty clear to me who’s the best anti-Romney.
Yep.
Some of us Texans tried to tell our fellow FReepers this back when Perry was rumored to be considering a run.
I’m not at all surprised by these poll numbers.
Some of us listened. Some. :)
“Im amazed at the continuing concerted effort to get Perry out of this race. As Rush said, liberals will tell you who theyre afraid of.”
He’s incompetent. An incompetant conservative is still incompetant. Regardless, he’s hardly a great conservative.
Perry’s too oldish for 2016 (unless it was a re-election deal, which it’s not going to be). I was suprised at how, please excuse me, “haggish” he’s been looking on the trail. For his age, time has not been a friend.
You failed to mention that Rick Perry is spending $400,000.00 of taxpayer money for his security while running his dead end campaign.
Yeah they were laughing at Reagan the 1st time he ran.
And we got PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN FOR 8 YEARS.
Some of you might want to rethink your giddiness.
I suspect in 3 years you will be BEGGING Perry to run.
