- Rick Santorum delivered a stark warning to South Carolina voters Saturday, telling them Mitt Romney is a sure loser in November if he becomes the Republican presidential nominee.
"Don't buy all this baloney that we need a moderate to win," Santorum told about 200 people gathered at Tommy's Country Ham House in Greenville. "We need someone with strong core convictions who is going to appeal to the voters in the states we need to win and that's not him. That's us."
Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, has trained his fire on Romney at stop after stop as he campaigns across the Palmetto State ahead of the January 21 primary.
But his sharp criticisms seemed to carry a fresh sense of urgency Saturday.
"The establishment is trying to ram down the people of South Carolina's and everybody else's throat Gov. Romney, as if he is inevitable," Santorum said.
He said Barack Obama would "destroy" Romney in the general election because he does not represent a "bold and courageous" contrast to the president.
Santorum cited the Romney-designed Massachusetts health care plan, which was a model for Obama's plan, as an example.
"Why would we pick someone who has had a record that as a liberal governor of Massachusetts to lead our country at a time we need fundamental change?" he asked.

Santorum is right. If Romney loses in South Carolina, we have time to rally around a conesrvative alternative. The time is now.
Right.... and Santorum would win what exactly?
Gingrich’s water buxket, that’s what. :)
Romney? I'd have all I could do to refrain from unleashing explicative deletives against his minions and the GOP / RNC establishment when they call me on the phone this summer.
I won't volunteer, send money, and will write in Goldwater, Palin, Reagan depending how I feel that day.
Rick is right, wake up America...
A years supply of sweater vests?
I don’t think Santorum’s electoral prognosis is good either, but he is absolutely right about Romney.
Romney is basically a parody candidate. If you took all of the stereotypes that the Left promulgates about Republicans, and then amalgamated them into one manthe result would be Mitt Romney.
He’s a multi-faceted cluster of liabilities in this election. Consider:
1) Upcoming racist Mormon church narrative.
2) Upcoming Wall St. corporate raider narrative.
3) Liberal governing record in MA will turn off conservative voters.
4) RomneyCare
nuff said. Will look extremely hypocritical.
5) Protested in favor of the draft, yet got himself a deferment.
6) Lacks charisma, has weak force of personality.
To the headline: yea duh!
Many years ago I was angry at the way national politics was being conducted. Rather than carefully research candidates and make a decision based on facts, I went with the one who seemed morally pious and superior.
Voting for Jimmy Carter is a huge regret I carry to this day, because Carter, socially conservtive but a fiscal liberal, believed and acted upon his belief in government solutions.
I am not going to make that same mistake again by voting for Rick Santorum.
"I think there are differences between me and Gingrich but frankly there are bigger differences between Romney and I than Newt and I," he said.
Right again, Rick. That's why should accept the VP slot when Newt offers it to you.The two of you would beat Romney, obliterate Paul, and then pummel Obama in what will be the toughest electoral slugfest in our lifetimes. Two are better than one.
Which is exactly why the Mainstream Media is trying to foist Romney on us and have him win the nonimation. This is not new info.
They destroyed Herman Cain because he scared the crap out of them...he could possibly have beaten Obama.
Palin had to be dealt with because she could possibly have beaten Obama.
They are dealing with the last few stragglers to get Romney a clear path to the GOP nomination because he cannot beat Obama.
Certainly doesn't sound like a "stalking horse" for Romney as a few have posted here.
The trickle of anti-Romney ads is already starting from the Left:
Prepare to see an onslaught of this kind of hammering for the next 10 months or so if Mitt’s the nominee.

He’s absolutely right.
