In her book Slander, conservative commentator and pundit Ann Coulter called Newt Gingrich one of the most consequential politicians in the last century. Why would she make such a claim? What did he do that had such consequence? In 1993, the Republican Party was the minority party. It had been in the minority since 1955. Even President Reagan had to deal with a Democrat Congress in the 80s and was limited in his ability to change Washington as a result. Newt Gingrich had seen this up close and personal. He had tried to help Reagan with the Conservative Opportunity Society. By 1993 he had become the Republican whip in the house. With his leadership the Republicans crafted a proposal called the Contract With America (CWA). It was designed so that Republican candidates could campaign on conservative principles in order to win their congressional seats and then govern in a conservative manner. The electorate responded. It handed the House and Senate over to the Republicans. This was a revolution unheard of in the times they occurred. Gingrich became the Speaker of the House as a result. The CWA was a conservative proposition. It held that the electorate could hold their representatives responsible and could remove them if they didn't perform. The representatives would be responsible to their constituents. But it also implied that they should perform like they would under a business contract. Did Gingrich write the contract himself? No. But he led the effort for congressional candidates to sign up. And most did. He led educational efforts for those potential conservative congressmen to help them campaign. Since then Gingrich has lead other congressional education efforts. He has been a constant source of education for congressional representatives. What did the Contract propose to do? There were two parts to the CWA.

Paragraphs would like to be your friend, if you would just let them.
How soon people forget that the political landscape today got its start from the tenacity of one person.
We’re living in the sunset of a dying society. It’s all about bread & circuses now.
Great article and very true. Newt Gingrich has served our courntry very well during his time in governance. He did so under a tremendous amount of opposition not only from the Left, but from the moderate center. This is very much the case in this current primary campaign.
All you need is to look at who endorsed Romney: Bush 41, Sununu Sr., McCain, etc. and compare that to those who endorsed Newt: Prof. Art Laffer, Thomas Sowell, the Palins (Todd publicly, Sarah implicitly), JC Watts, etc.
Newt Gingrich is exactly the leader we need today.
I am more than willing for Newt to have the opportunity to finish what he started. The rinos interrupted him, squandered the advantage he left them with and are now trying to stop him from doing it again. I can remember in the late 60s when Republican leaders reffered to the democrats as “The Loyal Opposition” and said “We all have the same goal, just a different way of getting there” I knew then that statement must be pure crap because I considered myself to be a mainstream Republican and knew the democrats didn’t want the same kind of America that I wanted. Apparently the rinos want a little less spending now and a little less government now than the democrarts and maybe even no one world government for a few more decades. We really need Newt now to stop all this crap, I don’t think anyone else in the race even knows the extent of our problem, much less either to know how, or be willing to get it fixed.
the tea party was waiting for sarah pailin
I like Sarah Palin, but she should have creamed Joe Biden during the debate, and could manage only the deer in the headlights look. She also takes media taunting too personally.
Viva la revolucion!
Newt is the original TEA party candidate. He gave us the largest capital gains tax cut in American history. He gave us the most significant welfare reform since the inception of welfare. He was instrumental in 4 balanced budgets. He impeached Bill Clinton and made so many enemies for it that it cost him the gavel. Never-the-less, it was Newt that led the charge. Imagine what he would do as President with a republican house and, dare I dream it, senate. You say you want a revolution? the left has to be crapping their pants at the prospect of President Newt. It’s no wonder they’re pushing Romney.
Oops! Sorry about that folks.
From your lips to God’s ears.
Go Newt!
That's exactly right....it's not a question of liking Newt or not...it's can he do what needs to be done and any who deny that he can is living in a bubble of their own making. It's simply historical fact what he did favorable for conservativism....people trying to discredit him from his accomplishments are simply those who have another candidate they're for...it's that simple.
I am so hoping he gets this because if any other does if Obama doesn't do them in...they'll get done in and eaten up by the Washington crowd.
Newt needs to pull this out or we will watch the ending of this Nation. Perry and Santorum will step into every landmine in Washington, they don’t know where they are.... which Newt does. He can blow them up, push them out or step around them...all the others will never know what hit them.
Well Reagan didnt win the House. It was still firmly in Democrat hands, and was assumed to always be that way, until Newt led the way to winning it.
“That person was Ronald Reagan, not NAFTA Newt”
Reagan was a big NAFTA supporter and believer.
“whose main contribution to today’s political landscape was to bawlderize national political discourse to the level of the Springer Show”
Newt had to bring it down to that level so you’d be able to understand, he didn’t wanna leave u behind.
