WASHINGTON Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich both pleaded with conservatives on Sunday to unite behind their candidacies in a last-ditch effort to stop Mitt Romneys march to the Republican presidential nomination.
Mr. Santorum said the Republican contest needed to quickly narrow to a two-person race between Mr. Romney and someone else, but he declined to explicitly call on the other candidates to drop out.
Im not going to tell anybody to get in or out of a race; I think thats their decision to make, Mr. Santorum said on Fox News Sunday. But he added, We need to get this eventually down to a conservative alternative to Mitt Romney.
Mr. Santorum said the vote of support for his candidacy by Christian conservative leaders on Saturday in Texas should persuade Republicans in South Carolina that he deserves to be that alternative.

Anyone who would violate private property rights by using eminent domain for the benefit of a foreign corporation is an opportunist, not a conservative.
I think traitor is a better term for that kind of action of course i’d use traitor to describe using eminent domain for American corporations as well. It’s funny, when a corporation is selling something they want what ever the market will bear but they won’t pay the price to acquire land in many cases.
Why go back and 'pick bones' from twenty or thirty years ago? No question; some of his views have changed; and no question as well; for as extreme as you would like to paint him; he nonetheless; never lost touch with his belief in Capitalism or our Constitution.
/Here; a review comment from Amazon per Newt's- shared authorship - 'Contract with the Earth':
The authors alternately brand their approach mainstream and entrepreneurial environmentalismmainstream because it rejects alarmist projections based on what they perceive as activist science and hysterical journalism, and entrepreneurial because they reject the notion that free enterprise and a cleaner world are opposing forces.
Book ultimately; a disappointment to hard-core environmentalists.
Newt is not only a 'teacher' but a student; who continues to learn and evolve. His leadership; by his record; cannot be honestly challenged.
Great you wrote two books; Newt has written 'many'; many books; and suggest if you read even a few of them; while you may find something to 'pick'; as likely; you would find a great deal more, that is substantial and meaningful.
Newt's appreciation of American and world history; has him determinedly on the 'right side' of it; and he is determined that we not embrace and revisit the worst of it.
Attacking his 'character' because you imagine his views do not somehow comport with American ideals is just an error in the making; but of course; you are entitled to you opinion.
That's like hard core Marxists saying that fascists are "right wing."
Compare Newt's reviews to mine.
Newt is not only a 'teacher' but a student; who continues to learn and evolve. His leadership; by his record; cannot be honestly challenged.
Then he could learn something from me. The first thing I would tell him is that this continent is an anthropogenic landscape; i.e., his whole idea of "preserving nature" is a destructive paradigm. Worse, trying to care for land through government is inevitably to put control of ALL resources in the hands of the politically dominant, usually the extremely wealthy.
Attacking his 'character' because you imagine his views do not somehow comport with American ideals is just an error in the making; but of course; you are entitled to you opinion.
Anyone who demonstrably and repeatedly violates his most solemn oath before ending those agreements is ultimately untrustworthy. Newt is so hungry for power and acknowledgment that he will do whatever it takes to attain both. Remember: even Zero thinks that what he is doing is for our own good.
I’m just sayin’ that the number of candidates that aren’t a lunatics or Romney is dwindling.
And if want a small government in Washington, you can’t countenance Santorum.
Which leaves just Newt or Perry.
And for those that can’t trust Newt because of the global warming commercial with Pelosi (and for some reason, there are many that won’t)... then those voters have only *ONE* choice left.
Perry is it for ‘em, regardless of how much they didn’t like his ‘heartless’ comment. (and those that didn’t like his ‘heartless’ comment are probably the selfsame thin-skinned idjits that object to Newt because of that commercial)
As for me, I’m happy with either Newt or Perry. Newt has better ideas, but needs someone to sometimes reel him in when he goes too far. And Perry would need a debate coach.
(well, come to think of it, he really wouldn’t if he made President - as how many Presidents go out debating?)
Our Country faces such huge problems; and of course; there is no 'PERFECT person' no PERFECT candidate. There are some talented ones; with varying degrees of expertise and unique talents. There is however, ONE candidate; more talented and experienced - and accomplished; than any of the others; and who can articulate (as the others cannot); America's problems; and as well; offer solutions.
Of course; do not expect to sway anyone who cannot discern the authenticity per 'patriot' Newt; versus the attributes of a thoroughly 'fraudulent' human being; one who proudly displays his anti-patriotism and whose truth, is nothing more than an empty Marxist-Alynsky-Maoist suit walking.
(Meantime; and no doubt; you could debate, wisely; knowledgeably with Newt per your expertise and issues; but America is hanging by a thread right now; and 'environmental issues' while saturated in deception and needing dedicated exposure; this issue is not in the pack of immediate, make - or break - agendas that so threaten our nation and our future.)
This is precisely wrong. What the hell do you think is holding us up from developing domestic resources, from oil to rare earth minerals to even FOOD??? If Newt "goes green" on us, as seems likely given his history and propensities, we can kiss off long term national survival, militarily or economically.
Sorry; but we need leadership that is ready at the 'moment'; to LEAD.. .no debate coach; no coaching per 'on the job training; or coaching per names of foreign countries; their Presidents; customs; protocols; and NO geography lessons; no learning of why NOT to bow to foreign kings. NOOOOOO. No LEADERSHIP training! No PC obligatories. . . No 'Islam for Dummies'! NO 'Learn our Constitution' self-help manuals!
WE should have voted for the one who has 'it'; knows it; and is ready to roll on Day ONE. . .
We have suffered enough embarrassment; loss of 'world face'; loss of confidence; loss of power that invites the worst of power to move against us.
These folks - who are still learning - can do 'other things'. They CANNOT expect to earn the world-class title of President of the United States of America!
All to say; NO freaking 'bobble heads' should apply or try to earn this critical, power position!
Period/end of discussion! (Among others; Rick Perry; are you listening?)
Most of our candidates ARE good; per their 'talk the talk' - though even here; weakness is apparrent. Know the talk; an 'walk the talk'; an MO that DEMANDS authentic leadership.
Can only say. . . 'Go Newt'; may the best man win. I pray he does.
Personally, think your political filter needs cleaning. All too bad; if not ridiculous to the extreme, IMHO.
As I mentioned earlier; anyone who compares Newt to the fraud that is Obama; cannot otherwise be convinced.
Not everyone liked or approved of Winston Churchill either; or Margaret Thatcher; or Ronald Reagan. . .certainly it was not l00% through the gates, without a scratch. . .but there can be no denying their contributions; their greatness; and their positive impact on history.
I DID READ WHAT HE WROTE IN MULTIPLE BOOKS, and I don't give a crap what he says in a primary campaign. Here is the difference between you and me: I don't believe what he says BECAUSE HE IS A PROVEN SERIAL LIAR, and if you don't think it takes a serious degree of dishonesty to carry on a lengthy adultery I've got news for you.
Ask a leftist if they believe in America and they will tell you they will. The question is: In which vision of America do they believe? At that point, you have to look at his WHOLE record and what it says isn't good from a regulatory environmental perspective.
Personally, think your political filter needs cleaning.
I'm not filtering, you are. You are choosing to disregard WHAT HE WROTE IN MULTIPLE BOOKS.
Not everyone liked or approved of Winston Churchill either; or Margaret Thatcher; or Ronald Reagan. . .
This is such an inaccurate analogy as to be dishonest. So congratulations, you're a perfect fit for Newt.
He should drop out; because he CANNOT win should he stands opposite Obama. I like Rick - but not for Prez. He LOST in home state; like Algore; what the heck qualifies him to be leader of Free World?

Better to explain 'why' you think this is dishonest (???). . .
As for Newt; if you cannot vote for someone, because they were 'imperfect' per their marriage - then just say so. I believe 'vows' do mean things; and if the marriage becomes something that is antithetical to those vows and the two people who made them; then there well may be 'no real marriage' to violate. Bigger point; is no can judge a marriage; unless it is your own; and beyond that; see no reason to go there. Newt has matured; found a more meaningful Faith (oh; probably lying here too; so scratch that; as I am sure you will . .)
Newt certainly 'not perfect'; but if you can name a candidate who is; or an esteemed Leader - from anywhere; beyond the Pope - perhaps(?). . .Mother Theresa or the Dali Lama (?) - then please do.
Meantime; to name just a few books by Newt; if he an inveterate liar; then these books would have to so 'laced'. But; of course; in truth; they are not written by a liar; as you would have to otherwise conclude by your premises.
Perhaps, instead of getting totally hung up per your 'anti-Newt' you should try reading more of him or as an author yourself; just try to appreciate his prolific literary contributions. Most people cannot help but be impressed. . .
(No hint of a communist in this woodpile of books; and to name just a few):
These are Times that Try Men's Souls: A Novel of George Washington and the Fight for American Freedom
A Nation Like No Other: Why American Exceptionalism Matters (6/12/2011)
To Save America: Stopping Obama's Secular-Socialist Machine (5/16/2010) by Newt Gingrich
And then there is "Valley Forge"; Gettysburg with co-Author and so many more; that speak to the history - and soul and future - of our Country.
