Geothermal energy developers plan to pump 24 million gallons of water into the side of a dormant volcano in Central Oregon this summer to demonstrate new technology they hope will give a boost to a green energy sector that has yet to live up to its promise.

There’s earthquakes all over the place where there never used to be earthquakes, allegedly from water pumped underground for “fracking” shale to extract gas, and these guys want to frack a volcano?

And the same people who think drilling for oil and/or coal mining is a bad idea believe this plan is brilliant?

Nobody who is loudly fretting about possible earthquakes from fracking is fretting about the unintended consequences of this proposal. Why?
(For my part, I wish the project all success. I think it very unlikely there will be any unintended consequences, except if there is an undue amount of hazardous minerals in the returned steam.)

$21.5 million in taxpayer money and they do NOT have plans to generate ANY power from this project! as per the article.
They should have named the company Volyndra.

A few days after the devastating explosion, as his hysterical laughter finally subsided, they asked the sole surviving scientist what was so funny....
Still howling with laughter, he choked out, "You should have seen that monkey trying to put the cork back in!"

You obviously dont understand how the system works. I didn't say find them now. Wait until they've invested billions in permitting, site prep, infrastructure and baksheesh first.
Then find the snails.

and how much energy is used to pump the water into it???Since this is a green project all the way, obviously they are going to use free perpetual motion windmills to do the pumping.
Du-uuh.......
To: aimhigh
Earthquake potential, since the process used is similar to fracking. One seminal difference: In fracking, the pressures involved are generated at the surface using pumps, and can be controlled, at least to the extent that pressure generation can be regulated or even stopped by shutting down the pumps.
Not so in this instance, where the pressure will ideally be generated at depth, by natural forces. In short, there will be only a limited amount of control that can be exerted over pressure generation.
This could go well, or it could be a disaster, or it might just prove to be another Solyndra-type sump for our money (watch for gubmint loan guarantees, grants, etc. to stack up...somewhere).

If this doesn`t work they will receive an extra $72 Million in stimulus funds to toss a virgin into the volcano to appease it.
Is the company`s owner named Joe?

I can't believe the ignorance around this place!
NO pumping involved.
They just dig a ditch from the site down to either Paulina Lake or East Lake, then line it with pickles.
The water will run up right to where it's needed...the more pickles, the more water.
SHEESH! I thought EVERYBODY knew that dill waters run steep!
