(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has opened a wide lead over his rivals in the South Carolina primary election race, trouncing Newt Gingrich and gaining momentum in his march toward the party's nomination, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows.
Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, could all but quash his rivals' presidential aspirations with a victory in South Carolina on January 21 after winning the first state-by-state nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Voters in South Carolina - who have favored Republicans in nine of the last 10 presidential elections - appear to have shrugged off attacks on Romney by rivals who accuse him of killing jobs as a private equity executive for Bain Capital in the 1990s.
The poll showed 37 percent of South Carolina Republican voters back Romney. Congressman Ron Paul and former Senator Rick Santorum tied for second place with 16 percent support.
Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, has fallen far back after holding a strong lead in South Carolina in December. He was in fourth place at 12 percent in the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

I agree!!
I can see why you would be skeptical after your experience!!
Heh... I’ll grant you this...you sure can argue.
I guess there’s something to be said for being a true believer in your chosen candidate, although I’d hate to experience that ‘thump’ when you finally hit reality.
Cheer lead on. I hope you learn something when this is all said and done. I don’t promise not to challenge you on future threads, though. Neither will others, so you’ve got your work cut out for you.
In other words, you don't know how a former Speaker of the House will fare in a presidential election, and can't predict with certainty that he'll fare the same as rank and file House members who've run for president before.
I supported Cain. So I think I should know a thing or two about disappointment.
For me, this is the crucial part. The week before South Carolina.
After that, you go with where the wind blows. I’ve already pledged to back Newt should he win, but until then - game on. :)
But he can't reel in 75% of conservative voters, which mathematically swings the race to the conservative, if there's only one running. That's the real issue we face right now. Two of the three remaining conservatives need to step down now, while it'll still do some good.
And neither can you predict what will happen in this year’s primary season based on previous results. ;)
;-) Thanks, friend. Much appreciated.
Fair enough. I was once a Dem myself. Thanks for the explanation.
I beg to differ.
Have you ever taken the time to examine Mitt Romney's record as Governor of Massachusetts? It's not substantially different from Obama's, and the effects he left in his wake are eerily similar to what's happening to the whole US right now.
I see Romney as being little more than a pale imitation of Obama. He only differs in degree, not in kind.
Now why'd you have to go and insult my mother? I was all done with fire fights for the night, and now you want to start up something again.
Say you're sorry.
I think santorum won Iowa, but the media doesn’t want the sheeple to know—till it is too late. If you guys stay home and cut your nose off to spite your face you will get what you deserve—Obama. America’s last days will be here. Unfortunately, we will all suffer.
After that, you go with where the wind blows. Ive already pledged to back Newt should he win, but until then - game on. :)
So, you have thought this thing through (to some degree). Very good. I didn't know that.
I also supported Cain, after my first choice, Sarah, bowed out. I've now had to experience that 'thump' twice, but this is as far as I want to go. I've looked over the rest of the field, and Newt is the last one remaining who I can give my wholehearted support to.
If he fails to win the nomination, I'm going to write in Sarah Palin in the general, and go home to dig my fox hole.
Uh...that was your line of argument, remember? LOL

My faith is the Iowa results this year. :D
I took a couple lasix tonite. I’m glad you are with your live in a sub.
Yep. Most of these polls aren’t meant to record or tally preferences, but to shape them.
I don’t hate him - believe me on that.
I just believe that Santorum is the better candidate. And I’m gonna fight hard for Santorum, just like you are gonna fight hard for Newt.
That’s how the game is played. Best man wins. We need you just as you need me.
Good luck with South Carolina, but I do believe that Santorum’s got a few more surprises left. :)
Take care.
