Marijuana doesn't harm lung function, study found

CHICAGO—Smoking a joint once a week or a bit more apparently doesn't harm the lungs, suggests a 20-year study that bolsters evidence that marijuana doesn't do the kind of damage tobacco does.

The results, from one of the largest and longest studies on the health effects of marijuana, are hazier for heavy users -- those who smoke two or more joints daily for several years. The data suggest that using marijuana that often might cause a decline in lung function, but there weren't enough heavy users among the 5,000 young adults in the study to draw firm conclusions.

Still, the authors recommended "caution and moderation when marijuana use is considered."

Having one or 2 cigarettes a week would not harm your lungs either. Heavy pot users would probably range sroung 10 pipes a day or more. Let them do a study on that and see if they come up with the same result.

Why did I initially think this was a California based study?

Show me the 20 year long study of one cigarette per week smokers.

Americans smoking marijuana has a tremendous second-hand effect.....people in Mexico’s heads fall off. Keep on puffing and pretend you can’t hear the screams of the Mexican children when they see their father’s headless bodies. Legalize it......bullshit. Quit using it. American illegal drug users are too stupid, lazy and chicken to face reality so they use illegal drugs to ignore reality for a few minutes. I hate cowards.

What it is is the age old ‘ Advocacy Research ‘ .

You mean four out of five dentists who recommend Trident gum to their patients who chew gum really don't recommend Trident gum at all?

I love it when leftoid control freaks take time out from blasting the smoking of tobacco in order to explain why the smoking of pot is a good thing.

I don’t know anyone who only smokes marijuana once a week and what would be the point of medical marijuana if it was only used once a week? Of course, I do know someone who bakes the marijuana into cookies for medicinal purposes, to hide it from the kids. I don’t know how she explains the fact that she doesn’t share her special cookies with the kids.

It's probably on the same shelf as the 20 year long study of one injection per week heroin junkies.

Either legalization or complete USA-wide cessation of use would end the carnage in Mexico. Which is easier to bring about?

4.2%? How did the Gov’t come up with that figure? I sure don’t remember being asked about my illegal drug use by the Federales lately. I guess this number was derived the same way the Regime came up with the “Jobs Saved” numbers. I have no faith in any number Kathleen Sebelius is selling.

This study is nothing more that talking points for the legalize pot crowd.

What a drama queen.

American criminalization of marijuana and the ensuing War on Drugs has a tremendous second-had effect . . . blah blah blah. De-criminalize it so that Americans who want to smoke it can grow it in their own vegetable gardens, and then your precious Mexican heads will remain where they belong: squarely atop Mexican necks.

I love it when conservative control freaks take time out from extolling the virtues of personal liberty and limited government in order to explain why massive government power is needed to prevent people from themselves. The best part of my day is when so-called conservatives line up behind progressive causes!

I get the feeling that you're the type of person who doesn't have any faith in anything that doesn't support one of your already-drawn conclusions. No offense.

People in the third world will always find some way to die horribly. If you legalize pot what will end up happening is it takes the illegal producers out of the picture us companies will grow it, regular people will grow it, foreign companies will grow it. The illegal producers and distributers will will switch to something else illegal and in high demand. Its their nature and people like that will always be lopping of heads or torturing someone. You also miss the fact that pot would be a multibillion dollar industry with thousands of jobs created. It won’t pull us out of the recession but it will help. Not to mention the millions we save on incarnation costs.

Legalize it, get the government somewhat out of the way and fewer people will perish.

You presume too much.

I never said anything in my post about instituting more government control.

I merely pointed out the hypocrisy of people who rant against tobacco smoking but rationalize and extoll the smoking of pot.

Don't let the paranoids get you!

Can you tell me how the Feds came up with this number? The HHS site has limited info on it.

Having spent my fair share of time at Phish and Grateful Dead concerts back in the day, I am fully aware of what the Pot culture is all about. This phoney study that proves nothing is purely for the Pro pot crowd to sell more people on legalization.

BTW, I used to be able to roll a one handed joint, just to let you know I am a little familiar with this topic.
