Rick Perry casts Mitt Romney as a greedy Wall Street 'vulture'
Los Angeles Times ^ | January 10, 2012 | Michael Finnegan

Posted on 01/10/2012 2:01:16 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

....Perry started slashing away at Romney’s record as chief executive at Bain Capital on Monday, but was more caustic Tuesday in condemning the firm’s practice of making money in corporate takeover deals that sometimes triggered job losses.

"They’re vultures that are sitting out there on the tree limb, waiting for the company to get sick, and then they sweep in, they eat the carcass, they leave with that, and they leave the skeleton,” Perry told about 100 seniors here at the Sun City retirement complex.

......Perry went on to castigate the Obama administration for allegedly failing to stop “self-dealing” on Wall Street.

“You’ve got to ask yourself, when the last three chiefs of staff for this president came out of Wall Street, you don’t think there’s a little bit of inside dealing going on there?” Perry asked reporters.

“That their buddies aren’t calling 'em up and saying, `Hey, how 'bout let’s not be quite that tough on those of us on Wall Street. We’re just good ol' boys out here trying to make a buck.’ This is a corrupt place. Wall Street and Washington are corrupt.”

Romney's campaign on Tuesday circulated a National Review editorial criticizing Perry and other Republicans for blaming him for job losses that resulted from Bain takeover deals.

"Wall Street has its share of miscreants, and they should be recognized as such when appropriate," it said. "But to abominate Mitt Romney for having been a success at the business of investing in struggling American companies, connecting entrepreneurs with capital and producers with markets, is foolish and destructive."......

“There are, in fact, some VERY unscrupulous characters out there in the VC world and I’m not saying Bain was one of them, but defending them is not defending capitalism as some here believe.”

This is what I dont get.

Why are there people on our side that think that Capitalism = everything done under it is automatically supposed to be applauded.

If I sell someone bread that is moldy and didnt tell you, should I be defended because it was capitalism?

He's not going after him because he is a capitalist. He is questioning his business practices.

Doesn't Rick and most other candidates want to do the same thing in DC - eliminate dying and/or useless Federal agencies and trigger job losses for thousands of Federal employees?

Washington DC needs a good "Bain'ing!"

Let’s find out how many “pension funds” were raided by Bain Capitol before forming ignorant opinions. It’s one thing to buy a company, sell its’ assets, and move on. It’s another to raid pension funds that people spent years saving, and leave them unemployed with no retirement funds.

Yes, and let's wait and see how many jobs were really created?

I guess Mr Rick (1%) Perry is letting us know that if he is elected, don’t plan on him firing anybody in the Federal Government...wouldn’t want to put any redundant people out of a job, don’t you know..thanks Rick, for letting us know ahead of time that it will be business as usual in DC with President Perry.

Well, I wouldn't vote for you either. Especially, if you were running around trying to pawn yourself off as a "job creator." Give me a break.

I don’t like this. Why do the RATs’ work for them. This is just more demonizing of successful people. Making a profit is legitimate and something all businesses need to strive to do. There has to be a better way to go after Romney than this.

Good post, Cincy’s Wife.

Btw, I wish the Rombots (who seem to be infilrating FR in anticipation of Newt’s $5 million ad blast against Willard in SC this week) would explain why American taxpayers have to pay for Willard’s business incompetence and greed?

Workers were denied the severance pay and health insurance they’d been promised, and their pension benefits were cut..

What’s more, a FEDERAL GOVERNMENT insurance agency had to PONY UP $44 MILLION TO BAIL OUT the company’s underfunded pension plan.

Nevertheless, Bain profited on the deal, receiving $12 million on its $8 million initial investment and at least $4.5 million in consulting fees.

One of the people I fired was drunk on the job placing lives at risk.

You ready to defend that?

he did say he like firing people.

I don't like being put in the position of defending Romney but I don't think Romney meant he necessarily likes firing people, I think he meant he likes to have the freedom to fire people and it has to be possible to do that.

No business is in business to lose money.

I would not defend a person drunk on the job. OTOH, it would not make me happy of the impact this person was having on society. Or, the effect his being fired would have on his family.

I’ve fired people before. I was happy to do it.

And I've happily fired a few bosses as well, taking my skills as an employee to other jobs where the work was more satisfying and the pay was better. Artifices such as unions and the vile minimum wage are the real destroyers of our economy and the liberty inherent in an unfettered marketplace.

I agree. That was bad advice. He will win more people over by going directly after obama. All of the candidates are too mired in mud, much to the rats’ delight. At the rate this primary season is progressing, there will be no man standing.

I am sick of this "pension fund is sacred money BS." A pension fund is no freaking different than any other investment, and in fact is one that the individual investor has little or no control over. In a pension, the individual investor has decided to be a lazy ass chump wearing rose colored glasses that has opted to give up their financial well being to the whims of not only the market, but doing so while putting all their eggs in one basket, while betting on one entity.

A pension fund is an asset of a company plain and simple and it is fair game if the company is failing in most cases.

Why should a pension fund for a line worker be treated any differently than company stock purchases or options by an office worker or CEO? If the company tanks you lose either way.

The only real difference is that pensioners have given up their right to control their investment by in large, whereas company stocks are (in most cases) more liquid.

I don't like this pension BS at all. It's the workers fault that they fall hook line and sinker for a "promise" they don't and can't control.

At the rate this primary season is progressing, there will be no man standing.

If questioning ones business ethics is off the table, then what is left? You don't think that this wasn't going to come out in the general election--think again.

I want the one man standing that has ethics.

Found this in post #28 - “Making a profit is legitimate and something all businesses need to strive to do.”

I’ll defend that all day long. If you have a problem with profit you might be on the wrong website.
