Hardening Your Home Against Home Invasions (Vanity)
FR ^ | Jan. 9, 2012 | FR

If you missed this thread of a few days ago on a 14-year-old boy shooting an intruder in N.C., or if you didn't see all the responses, it's definitely worth checking out. The thread is also linked at the "read more" button below.

On that thread, I asked for freepers' thoughts on whether there were things that made some homes more vulnerable to home invasion than others. (It seems like it would be obvious that a more rural or remote home would be more vulnerable, but news reports in my area do not substantiate that assumption at all. Homes in crowded suburban neighbors get hit, too.)

Also, it's clear that, for various reasons, not every person in a household is going to be able to use a gun, even if one is available. I asked about ideas and discussion on ways that might deter invasions in the first place, although it goes without saying that nothing is foolproof and no one wants to live in a total fortress environment.

A poster suggested I make my questions into a stand-alone thread, and I decided to do so. Reading reports of several local home invasions in today's news, as well as a rash of "smash and grab" buglaries, had nothing to do with reminding me of the topic. Right.

So, yes, we know about guns and dogs (and tips regarding those are always still welcome). But what other things might be unobtrusively effective in deterring home invasions or allowing them to have a "happy" ending (dead perp)?

In the comments on our local crime stories, I saw that some people were using baby monitors to be alerted to noises around their back doors, etc. Thus, allowing them more time to investigate or prepare if a break-in developed.

This is cheap and useful, It is a security alarm that calls several phone numbers (like your cell) when the alarm is tripped but allows you 30 seconds to turn it off when you get home.... http://www.amazon.com/Security-Burglar-Alarm-System-Dialer/dp/B000SMM1DY/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1324613281&sr=1-1

You nailed it. I am a stupid ahole. I’ve told people for years that I’m an ahole. When the kids wanted something and they asked why they couldn’t have it or do it. I always told them it was because I’m an ahole. They never once argued with me that I wasn’t. Neither has anyone else.

Add the stupid part and you get the whole picture. I’m a stupid, crazy, ahole.

“I posted about the wasp spray before reading your post. Had a friend who swore by having a can in the car at all times.”

Oops, missed your post. Being a backyard mechanic, I have spritzed my eyes with all kinds of nasty brake or carb cleaner & etc. and it it is not fun! The good part about the bug spray is the distance. It may not hurt immediately like pepper spray, but just yell something about “Hydrocarbons, insecticide, blindness, etc.”.

If you mount the nets on the insides of exterior doors and windows they will prevent quick entry. They are not easy to cut through which gives you valuable time to perforate the incoming democrats.

These are available at cheaperthandirt.com for about $30.

...he kept a bottle of — well, I’ll have to describe it — one of those bottles of spray that you shoot up about 20 feet onto your gutter or somewhere like that to kill wasp nests.

We have keychain containers of capsaisin - enough to give me time to exit quickly in the event of necessity. At home we have containers (large) of bear spray that we take on hikes in our area, but are handy enough to grab quickly in the event we can't make it to our "equalizers." We've already had someone knock on our door at 10:00 PM (and no one was visible at the door). We live rural and police take time to get here. We're not about to be "defenseless."

We and our next door neighbor have put up trip wires in the backyards using monofilament line. We live in Gwinnett County which is illegal alien central and they are always running through people’s yards in the middle of the night. We also put up a woodpile that runs down one side of our yard and is about 3-4 ft tall. You can’t see it in the dark and we have had a bunch of them run full tilt into it. That has got to be brutal. Sometimes they hit it so hard that part of the top of it is tilted forward.

Our neighbor put a trail cam outside the house and got pics of illegals coming right up to his back door and out in the yard trying to steal some metal he had piled up.

I have been trying to get the other half to rig up a 12 volt battery with a wire and an alligator clip to the front door knob. We just had somebody sneaking around on the front porch the other night. I would have loved to light that guy up. The dog started barking at the front window and ran him off. If they should get in the house we will just shoot them but I’d just as soon not have to.

Long story short all this is going on and we have not even had the crash yet. So you can imagine what will transpire when it all unravels. The best thing to do is get thee to the country. That is what we are in the process of doing.

I’ll research this, it would seem how you install them would be important.

Something cheap and helpful is the way to go for me. I really appreciate your post and reply.

Wow. Until you can move, you may want to try the “I’m an ahole - don’t mess with me” approach that others have described. I would be tempted to hook up a few outside speakers and find some good audio files of automatic weapons fire and a ferocious dog barking. Randomly play them at different hours of the night for a few weeks. If nothing else, it would have good entertainment value. ;)

And you could try the empty beer cans + empty ammo boxes in the the back yard, too. Good luck to you.

Sadly Meatloaf, there are true idiots and aholes out there. And they don’t care if you are protecting your rights and property. Although down in the thread it talks about how the weed control guy DOES (”legally”) have right to access your property - at least in Washington State.

And of course anyone that DOES try to protect their property will get painted by the media as some nut. (Or an idiot and/or ahole.)

VERLOT, Washington State — The Snohomish County Medical Examiner on Tuesday identified Daniel L. Wasilchen as the man killed by deputies Friday night.

Wasilchen, 44, died from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, the medical examiner said. His death was ruled a homicide.

The shooting apparently was linked to a disagreement over removal of noxious weeds on Wasilchen’s property.

The county’s noxious weed coordinator reportedly was going door-to-door Friday seeking homeowner permission to use an herbicide.

Wasilchen became confrontational and threatened to get a gun, officials said. The weed coordinator called 911.

they might steal my TV and VCR...

Don't worry. Once they find out that you still have a VCR, nobody will want to break in. :-)

And do you have the little bells that you can wear, so that the bears can hear you coming?

Sorry to bust your bubble, but that is totally worthless. Unless you put your tongue on it, you won't feel 12 volts.

Check out the “Terminator” pepper spray booby trap!!

The cheap version of that is an open bottle of bleach tied to an open bottle of ammonia with a tripwire.

I’ve seen monitors with a light on them and I think they make one with motion detector for sleepwalkers too.
Small dogs have a place if you can stand them, remember to hook dog kennels (if you have them) to alarm system if you lock them up, hit the panic button and it releases the Gates.
Finally before buying or renting a property check out it’s history;drug dealing, domestic violence, abandoned, richest guy in town, lets you know of possible threats. Most of our local home invasions recently have been former drug dealer homes or victims that were once in the trade.
Remember someone gets out of jail and may not have up to date street knowledge, so goes to old haunts.
