Santorum, Perry Campaign In Upstate
WYFF News ^ | January 9, 2011 | John Eby

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Republican presidential candidates Rick Perry and Rick Santorum campaigned in the Upstate on Sunday.

Santorum made two stops in Greenville at Chiefs Wings and Firewater on Congaree Road and at Stax Restaurant on Woodruff Road.

Perry campaigned at the Beacon Drive-In in Spartanburg.

Both candidates have made it clear that their focus is on winning South Carolina while Mitt Romney leads most polls leading into the New Hampshire primary.

"I challenge you to go work in South Carolina in the next two weeks like you've never worked before," Perry urged supporters.

"We've moved down here and we're all in," Santorum told the crowd at Stax.

On policy issues, Perry pledged to try to cut pay for Congress, and supported South Carolina's proposed immigration and voter I.D. laws.

"When I'm the President of the United States you don't have to worry about a Perry administration justice department coming into your state and telling you how to run your state from the standpoint of 'You need a photo I.D. to be able to vote,'" Perry said.

Santorum vowed to repeal No Child Left Behind, despite having voted for it while in office. He also distanced himself from the foreign policy views of rival candidate Ron Paul.

"The bottom line is, I am not a libertarian. I am a conservative. I am a Reagan conservative. I do believe in a strong defense. I do believe we should not cut our military. We need to make it stronger so we are safer," Santorum said.

Both candidates made strong pitches to socially conservative Upstate voters.

"(I have) a record that says that we believe in the dignity and sanctity of every human life. It says that we believe the pillar of our society is the family," Santorum said.

Perry told stories about his upbringing to try to gain a rapport with voters.

"I had all I needed. I had my family that loved me. I had my faith in God. I had a community that took care of each other, and that is what america is really based upon when you really think about it," he said.

At Stax, Santorum accepted the endorsement of Gary Bauer, a social conservative icon and former policy advisor to Ronald Reagan. Bauer even referred to Santorum as "the next Ronald Reagan."

Perry plans to make stops in Anderson and Greenville on Monday.

Rick Perry can do just one thing in South Carolina, and that is help Mitt Romney win.....

There you are again noobie hitting all the threads to help Newt.

Cute.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I loved Bush but Perry is far more conservative.

As to Rick Santorum, his core values seem to be mutable.

He panders to whatever state he’s in. He pandered to the ethanol subsidies in Iowa.

He pandered to the union voters in New Hampshire (anti right to work - though he tried to spin it later)

He doesn’t look like a president or act like one. His surge was based on one caucus and it doesn’t look as though he’ll be able to maintain it.

As to Newt ... well, that’s a whole other story.

I just hope South Carlolina will wake up.

Yeah, we’ve been urged to do that by our fearless leader, but it doesn’t totally work in real life (is this real life? I hope so because I’m here a lot)

We can’t be faulted for noting ways in which Perry is vastly superior to Santorum and we can’t do that without explaining Santorum’s various shortcomings.

I always conclude by vowing to vote for whoever is standing at the end to defeat Romney. I don’t think it will be Santorum.

In the words of another great Texan (for a while) Don Meredith,

“If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have a Merry Christmas.”

Everyone thinks we should abandon OUR candidate and support theirs.

As long as Rick Perry is fighting and has a chance I will support him.

If he doesn’t make it, I will reluctantly vote for another candidate, but it won’t be Romney.

Yes, Newt is the candidate I think can actually win. Seems you hit all the thread for Mr. Perry. I am ok with that. What shoud I call you? Oldie? It is very funny to me that because someone has posted through the years on a particular site somehow they feel it important to point out when someone (they think is new) comes on to say they have not been around long. So this must mean they don’t know what they re talking about. Interesting argument.

Ordinarily I dislike it when people resort to using the term ‘newbie.’

But you have suddenly joined this forum to promote one viewpoint and one candidate.

To add to that, you have kind of insulted CW who is a long-time faithful Perry supporter and well known for posting Perry threads.

You got a problem with that? Stay off of them.

Huckabee had more to do with us getting McCain than Fred did.

I have no problem sir. Why is it when a long-time faithful Perry supporter calls me a name it is not insulting. Good grief. Yes I am promoting the person I think can win, Newt. Are you saying that she is not supporting just one person, Perry. I don’t like double standards. And I will hit this thread again for her. I will be glad to support any of the candidate over Obama, except Paul or Romney. And I am cute.

My reason no. 2 to support Gov. Rick Perry is that Gov. Perry is an Air Force veteran. Perry flew C-130s in Central and South America, North Africa and all over Europe, including Iran. Perry retired in 1977 with the rank of Captain.

I am greatly troubled by Santorum's protection of unions. He filibustered "right-to-work" legislation.

It will not be possible to get this country back on the right track to prosperity and and job creation while allowing unions to kill jobs.

Rick Perry is a fine and honorable man, and if nominated I will support him and work for him in Texas. I honestly hope you guys are right, I just don’t see it. On the other hand, I am quite sure Newt will give Obama more than he can handle. I’ll carry Newt’s baggage for him if I have to.

My reason no. 3 to vote for Perry is that Perry has signed pro-life legislation that defunded Planned Parenthood in TX with the result that 12 PPs have closed.

Perry also signed legislation requiring a parent's consent for a minor to have an abortion.

It would be another election where I'm not so much voting for our guy as voting against theirs.

That's what I'll be doing and I'll be doing it rather enthusiastically as Obama is a 100% disaster and I'd rather go into this thinking that at least we have a chance with Romney where we know we have no chance with Obama.

Folks, Obama is really that bad--we cannot allow him to be reelected.

I think I like you. And I am Joys’ husband. I guess in my excitement to support Newt I come accross as being very negative toward the others. I really should not do that. Sorry.
