China: The rise of the 'Precious Snowflakes'
The Telegraph ^ | 1-8-12 | Malcom Moore

Posted on 01/08/2012 12:54:34 PM PST by afraidfortherepublic

"They are 'Precious Snowflakes', wrapped in cotton wool from day one," said Paul French, the founder of Access Asia, a China-based research company.

"Nothing is ever quite right for them. It is always either too hot or too cold and they are all hypochondriacs.

~snip~

"The first generation, the Little Emperors, were quite tough: fat little thugs always stuffing themselves full of McDonald's," said Mr French. "The new generation is very concerned with things like air quality, which the Little Emperors never bothered about.

"They only drink Evian and are scared of food unless it is imported. Their parents tread quietly around them so they can do 'natural waking', where they do not use alarm clocks but are in tune with their biorhythms."

~snip~

Gu Jianmei, 47, has taught at the Tianjia'an No. 3 kindergarten in Huainan, Anhui province, for three decades. She said the current generation of students had been banned from making any "big movements", like jumping, dancing or crawling, because of fears the children might hurt themselves.

"We have padded all the stairs, bannisters, corners and the children do not do physical exercise. Instead we lie them on cushioned mats," she said.

"They are more aggressive, and also more weak. They cannot control themselves and they give up when given tasks to do. Because their parents do everything for them, they do not believe they can do things themselves. They cannot even do up their buttons," she said.

~snip~

"The first generation of single children have already been deprived of having brothers and sisters. The second generation is even worse: they do not have cousins, uncles or aunts either. Some of them face being entirely alone when they grow up and their parents pass away. Think how lonely they will be."

Ok. I’m an idiot but why is China’s population not going down?

My over simplified question:

Generation I

1,000,000,000 - One billion people

Minus 1/3 who are older and past child bearing years. 45 years or older.

660,000,000 - Total male and female
330,000,000 - Couples giving birth to only one child.

Generation II

330,000,000 - Total male and females
165,000,000 - Couples giving birth to only one child.

Generation III

165,000,000 - Total male and females
82,500,000 - Couples giving birth to only one child.

...one child or no children ...

Out of my closest college friends, I have the most children with three. I was 33, 35 and 38 when they were born.

Of my friends, one has never married, four have only one child and one recently got married at age 45.

One of my friends had her first and only child at age 40.

The sad thing is, my friends come from good Christian families. We all married kind of late-ish. If only we all could have had more kids to pass along our values.

I read this years ago, in an article describing an only child marrying an only child, and having one child - that child has no siblings, cousins, aunts/uncles...

I guess this is the answer to the China problem people worry about.

I was contemplating that line as I scrolled down the comments. It occurs to me that this will also bleed over into their education system as well. How far down will it be ‘dumbed down’? At the very least critical thinking and reasoning skills will also atrophy.

China also has no problem killing trouble-makers. These spoiled only children come from upper class families or educated middle classes - farmers get 2 kids and the desperate poor often have illegal children and pay the fines. Only those who have been in the cities for two generations or were functionaries have this 4-2-1 family model.

Well, perhaps we should not worry about war-mongering Chinese hordes. The Snowflakes don’t sound much like soldiers.

The current birth rate is 1.8 in China, since one child is the goal but rural families, ethnic minorities and certain desirables and rich who pay the fines get to have 2 kids.
China’s birth rate was close to 6 kids from 1950s-1960s. In the 1970s, they started trying to get the birth rate down. Even in 1975, the birth rate was 2.7.
This means that the first generation of only children were born to parents with 2-5 siblings.

India is next:

Demographers expect India’s population to surpass the population of China, currently the most populous country in the world, by 2030. At that time, India is expected to have a population of more than 1.53 billion while China’s population is forecast to be at its peak of 1.46 billion (and will begin to drop in subsequent years).

India is currently home to about 1.21 billion people, representing a full 17% of the earth’s population. India’s 2011 census showed that the country’s population had grown by 181 million people in the prior decade.

When India gained independence from the United Kingdom sixty years ago, the country’s population was a mere 350 million. Since 1947, the population of India has more than tripled.

At the time of independence, India probably also included Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Great piece.
Having grown up as part of the Belmont, or rather Upper East Side, class, I have instinctively known this since childhood. Oikophobia is a norm, if not a shibboleth. However, not following sports is wrong. They follow local teams.

I suspect that China wil end the one child policy in a generation to save themselves.

So the educated class raise a few dysfunctional neurotics, while the underclass out-breed them. What does that tell you about the stability of such a society (there or here)?

“Yep, age 5 through 15 was not exactly a fairy tale for me.”

Likewise. When you don't fit these years seem to be some of the worst. I was lucky to have a couple of loyal friends who weren't mainstream also. Still have them. One of the few TV shows I watch is “Big Bang Theory” sometimes because I sympathize with social clumsiness of the characters.

When other kids would talk about having a full house at Christmas I had no reference.

Hey, I'm in Illinois, come on over at Christmas. We had 26 here at Christmas, the down side is that before it was over, I wished that I had been somewhere else, almost anywhere else. I love kids but not all at once!

China is California with out the insane immigration problems.

Hmm, I would rather move to China than California.

When I was having kids most of us seemed to have 3 (it got kind of trendy to have 3 for some reason). And that generation is just not reproducing at much of a rate and most seem to be waiting until their thirties (my kids are all in their thirties and one is just now having their first child). I had imagined a houseful of grandkids, especially since I had my kids when I was pretty young, but it seems that it won’t be the case. I think the economy has had a big impact. Obviously I think my kids would make wonderful parents.
And sadly, only my own father is still alive (at 87) so this generation will not know their Great Grandparents at all. I knew my Great Grandmother (she died when I was in my early 20s) and had 3 of my Grandparents into adulthood as well.

Quite a house full! I should have added to my post that I now have four step kids and 4.5 grand kids and am loving spoiling them rotten.
