Most Americans still believe any good student can find a way to get into college, and if a student is accepted at a college but can't afford it, a sizable number of adults think the government should pay for it.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of American Adults finds that 60% of adults believe that just about any good student who wants to attend college can find a way to do so in America today. Thats up from 54% in early May 2009. Twenty-nine percent (29%) dont believe this to be true, while 11% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

20 credits a semester and 7 years to get a BS? Something does not compute.
In 1961, I was in sixth grade, and we were getting one of those “you all have to go to college” lectures from our teacher, and we had been getting the same lecture from our parents for all of our short lives.
One student asked what was probably the most pertinent question fo our age - “If everyone is smart, who will do the dirty work?”
With everyone going to college to get a white collar job, nobody wanted to do production line work. So, the factories closed and and we import what we used to make here in America.
So, after almost two generations of everyone going to college, and most not belonging there, many of the ones who did not belong in college, and are too lazy to work in a factory, and are too stupid to figure it out, ended up in one of the Occupy camps.
Too many colleges are just indoctrination mills into Socialist dogma.
Many people have made the big time without college. Think Albert Einstein. Rush Limbaugh’s father insisted he go to college. Rush tried it and dropped out within the first year. His father told him he’d never amount to anything.
Should the government (you and your neighbors) buy me an iPad if I cannot afford it? A new pair of fancy Nike’s? A Honda Civic? Pay for my haircut? A flatscreen TV?
Why not, just print more “money”.
I wonder how many think gov’t should buy a car for those that cannot afford it?
While college participation rates are higher marginally, the connection to the manufacturing labor force is not there. Get real.
“Something does not compute.”
You are correct. I had to go back and do some calculating. It was from the fall of ‘67 to the spring of ‘71. Total of 8 semesters. So it was 121 credits over 8 semesters. It was still hell, carrying a full time job.
My daughter has been trying to enter that field. In fact, she landed a job as a medical assistant in a doctor's office without completing a medical assisting course and worked there for nearly a year before the practice was audited by the state and she was terminated because she didn't have her "credentials". She was doing a great job, in fact, the doc liked her so much during the time she was there, he gave her more responsibility and a raise. The patients loved her, and that's what he really cared about.
Bottom line is, she'd spend about $10,000 to land a $12.00/hr. job. How could she pay off a loan that size and support herself? She's currently waitressing, saving up the money.
Aren’t they listening to the 99%? Protesters are whining that they can’t get jobs despite their degrees. So what’s the use????
They are talking out of both sides of their mouths. Either college degrees will get you a job or they won’t.
I’m sure that gumption and effort have nothing to do with it.
The Current FReepathon Pays For The Current Quarters Expenses?
the key phrase here is “good student.”
Everyone has a different definition.
A truly “good student” is usually able to get private scholarship $$ to attend college and/or figure out ways to work part time and attend college.
Surprised it isn’t higher than 38%.
I worked my way thru a community college too, 12 hours/semesters hitch hiking to from school at night. Yes it was a b*tch. But I am glad I did it, never graduated. I just took all the math, physics and computer science classes the school offered without ever taking a English course. Once I ran out of classes to take I stopped going, but I did manage to get a better job with my new improved skill set so it all worked out for the best.
There is always the GI Bill. Can’t afford to go to college? Defend your country for 6 years and while there take night classes or online classes.
And take something useful.
Big government at work with a big assist by big insurance. I'll bet this kinda stuff happened thousands of times a day all thru out the USA. These days government regulates just about every facet of our working and personal life. We are lucky will can still take a crap (in our government approved tolet) with out a permission slip.
I did a few semesters on the GI bill long ago, but was not really serious about getting an education at that time. later in life I got serious, lol, late bloomer I guess.
‘Quaint idea’ — I like your phrasing. College is just a business. It is way over-priced, they do not deliver what they promise, they brainwash your kids on YOUR dime, and the market should take care of finishing the bad ones off. There is no earthly reason why We the People should purchase this commodity for Lazy Loafers.
arrggg, where IS the common sense these days?
The next question should have been, “how much are you willing to have your taxes go up to pay for these kids’ college?” These attitudes disgust me. 38% is a big chunk of the American population. And I have no reason to believe that this poll is flawed. I bet 38% of Americans really do believe this nonsense. And I also bet they believe that “the rich” should be the ones paying for it. Its more of the “Gimme gimme gimme and make the rich pay for it” attitude that infests way too many Americans. Give me and everyone else the good life without having to pay for it.
