Santorum: Trim Social Security now even if painful

KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.

"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.

Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

Yeah, you got me. I haven’t read ANY of your posts. - rolls eyes - Prior to you abandoning the thread, do us all a favor and please spell out what steps you’d take to ensure SS’s continuation and our country’s fiscal future. P.S. Ranting about cutting out “waste” won’t slice it. Not even close.

Pay off the people who paid into it ... cut the rest of us free ... END the Marxist/Leninist nightmare.

Yep.

But our nation can’t pull the rug out from under seniors to do it. Government lied and cheated. That’s not the old folks fault.

Who in heck do you think voted in the politicians who created this mess? Sheez.

Truthfully I think it is worse than that, the entitlement mentality in America is legion and spread across all demographics and political identification. In short freedom is on the way out.

Of course you do. Just like you take deductions for RE taxes and mtg interest. Did your wife ever teach at a public school and accrue benefits at the expense of the taxpayers.Do or will your parents receive SS benefits?Do or did your Grandparents?
Why is that you want to abolish only the programs that you’re not eligible for?

I have been promised SS too and paid in for 20 years before I had kids. I will probably pay in another 20 years and won’t see a dime of it when I retire. My deduction for 3 children probably comes close to what I pay in SS if you admit it all goes into the same pot of money. If it is seperate as some say, I pay over 6k a year to a “fund” that I won’t see.

You illustrate the problem nicely... the government has created a mandatory program to “help people” and they have spent everything they have and borrowed 16 trillion more.

Here we are on a conservative forum and you are giving me the stink eye to make sure I pay my fair share so you get your benefit.... sigh. Do you resent the tax deductions I get for 3 children and a mortgage? If so, the progressives won and you are on the wrong forum.

babygene - If it were up to me they would cut everything across the board except defense and security. They would also phase out social security. I would skip it if it meant my kids had a brighter future.

This is why our Republic is doomed. It is obvious that my children are a mere nuisance to some on here compared to their government check. I get it, the government took that money from you and promised to return it with interest. The same government that promises to pay back the 16 trillion in debt that they have accrued. It was wrong then and it’s wrong now.

If you are drawing the check don’t fear, it will keep on coming. Eventually, it won’t buy nearly as much as it does now though. You will pass on and leave the mess for me and my kids to clean up but it’s cool as long as you get yours, right?

Am I on a conservative forum?

Social Security needs changes. But our nation can’t pull the rug out from under seniors to do it. Government lied and cheated. That’s not the old folks fault.

Who voted for these idiots? Old people or my children who can’t vote?

If I invest in a ponzi scheme do you feel sorry for me when it fails? Probably not.

Why is social security different? How is it conservative to rob one generation to pay another?

I will gladly take care of my grandmother. I will gladly take care of my parents and/or any other immediate family that needs it. That was the America our founders intended. Those without children should band together to survive instead of robbing me and my children.

Whoever told you above that you sound just like the rats did when Bush proposed some common sense change to the program was absolutely correct.

This thread is like a Twilight Zone episode - where I went to bed and when I woke up, someone had replaced FR with a Bad Spock version of itself.

“If you are drawing the check don’t fear, it will keep on coming.”

IF and WHEN I collect more in social security than I paid in over the 40 years I worked and contributed, plus a reasonable amount of interest (say at savings bond rates, I may feel bad about collecting my social security. Franlky, I doubt that I ever will...

It’s a shame that you don’t like the truth. You can’t pull the rug out from under an 80 year old. Well.................maybe you can.

Read this thread FRiend.... On a conservative forum, no less.

Why don’t families take care of one another? If my parents can’t afford to live on their own why don’t they live with me or other people in the same circumstance?

Why did people abandon savings and stop paying off their debts before retirement? I bet the shift started with the birth of social security. Party all you want because the government has got your back!

When did children decide that they would abandon their parents? Oh yeah, the government promised to take care of them.

The American dream..... right?

I know that I won’t ever get a social security check. If they would phase the program out I would gladly continue to pay over 6k a year into it for another 15 years if it meant my children did not have to participate.

I will teach my kids to be self-sufficient and will skip out the corvette, the new 45k truck, and weekends on the golf course that some of my neighbors enjoy to put aside something to take care of my family and myself.

When I leave this job I will find another to continue to provide for my family and educate my children. I work hard on our little farm and might even make a little bit of money on it eventually!

That is conservatism....

>We should have a program where welfare people have to work for retired people, cleaning, yard work etc. in lieu of an actual SS payment. How’s that for thinking out of the box?

I like the idea. I don’t see it getting past all the wailing of the left, but I certainly like the idea.

Seniors have long formed a voting block that prevented any serious reform of Social Security and Medicare. They voted in the frauds that created the system and they voted in the frauds that perpetuated the system. They are hardly innocent bystanders to the entitlement train wreck now facing this country.

And your talk of granny freezing in the dark is right out of the Dem/AARP playbook in blocking needed reforms. The average granny, if her Social Security were cut, might have to cut back one vacation trip a year. For each granny who lives off her Social Security, there are two or more who increase their level of luxury from it - while the working stiffs paying the taxes struggle to have enough pay left to build their own retirement savings.

I do not begrude seniors their wealth. But there also should not be a massive wealth transfer from those nowhere near as well off as they are to them.

So Santorum is right here - he is not saying cut the benefits to those on fixed incomes on SS - but instead to cut it to those who can absorb a cut. Because as a poster noted, those who retired in 1990 or so got back what they paid in within a couple of years. If they are 86 now, it means they have gotten a 10-1 payout. That is an entitlement.

Why don’t families take care of one another?

Because we now warehouse the old in facilities.

Have you seen this movie?

Agenda - Grinding America Down

Marxism has slowly crept into DC and this film shows you how they did it. It also discusses the different tactics used to divide and conquer such as racism, feminism, class evny and generational warfare. EVERYONE needs this info.

Making seniors the scapegoat isn't the answer. We need to fulfill our promises to them. HOWEVER, do something different for the young. Use capitalism and show them how to take care of their retirement. Cut government agencies and eliminate some. We can't balance the budget on the backs of the elderly. We need a many pronged attack on many fronts.

They voted in the frauds that created the system and they voted in the frauds that perpetuated the system.

This is a stupid, marxist statement. They get what they deserve? Obama was voted in too. You deserve that?

Generational warfare is a marxist tenet used to divide and conquer.

Watch the movie in 478. We need changes but we also need to be responsible about it.

I wanted my mother to live with my family. She wanted o live alone. She was so stubborn and had this independence streak till the day she died.
