Joran van der Sloot to Begin Peru Murder Trial

Prosecutors are seeking a 30-year prison sentence for Van der Sloot on murder and theft charges in a trial that will be held at Lima's Lurigancho prison. He is accused of murdering Flores with "ferocity and great cruelty," and prosecutors say he also stole 600 soles, about $220, from the victim.

The handsome, garrulous Dutchman, a staple of true-crime TV shows for years after Holloway's disappearance, has in several interviews described himself as a pathological liar. He's been in custody after his arrest in neighboring Chile just days after Flores' death.

Van der Sloot shares a cell with a Mexican and a Chinese inmate at the maximum security Miguel Castro Castro prison, separated from convicted prisoners, said his lawyer, Jose Luis Jimenez.

He said Van der Sloot spends his days making crafts and reading self-help books.

Should take less time than the hanging. Well one can still dream.

A guy like this cannot leave it one major crime that he has gotten away with. He will continue on the same road until he hits a wall. That wall seems to be in Peru for Heer van Der Sloot.

My thoughts mimic yours about this guy. He gets off clear and free from the apparent murder in Aruba and yet seems bound and determined to get caught. I hope it was the guilt over whatever he did to poor Natale that drove him, but I somehow doubt it was anything but pure evil.

With a lawyer named Jose Jimenez he’s as good as free.

He was not trying to get caught. He is either a psychopath that has no sense of the future or he just assumed that he would always get away with it. He perhaps has an infantile sense of time and an adult body and passions.

Should take less time than the hanging. Well one can still dream.

Another thread, some time ago, described his quarters as a "club fed" setting with prostitutes and alcohol.

I'd rather he face decapitation or a firing squad.

Hangings carry racist connotations.

Not to everyone.

I dont think so. Lynchings in the US have recent racist connections.

But many more white people have been hanged in the US than all other racial groups combined.

Van der Sloot to “sincerely confess” to murder in Peru

LIMA (Reuters) - Dutch citizen Joran Van der Sloot said on Friday he would “sincerely confess” to killing a Peruvian woman in 2010 in a plea strategy that aimed to reduce his eventual prison sentence, - - prompting judges to suspend the trial until next Wednesday.

On the first day of his trial in Lima, he told the court he should not be charged with aggravating circumstances of the murder that could lengthen his sentence.

Under Peruvian law, a prison term for a “sincere confession” to a murder is normally much shorter than one for an outright guilty plea. Prosecutors have said Van der Sloot robbed and killed Flores before fleeing the scene of a crime to Chile.

If Van der Sloot formally enters a “sincere confession” to the judges on Wednesday, the trial would quickly enter a sentencing phase - - and he could spend less than a decade behind bars.

“- and he could spend less than a decade behind bars.”

Or an eternity. Prison justice. The latest victims father is politically powerful. Peruvian prisons are hell holes. I see no way Van Der Sloot can survive long at all there.

He made a deal with the devil and he will face him soon.

He strangled Miss Flores because she was looking at emails regarding the death of Natalie. Do we know if the law down there looked at what was on his computer?

Yes, they looked at Joran’s computer and there was nothing about Natalee accessed on his pc during the time Ms. Flores was in his motel room. Surprise! Joran told another lie.

Good to see you, CO!
That picture shows this is all a game to him. The handsign he is giving in that pic proves it. I also noticed the darkness around his eyes. He was yawning during his court appearance. I think he is well into the web of cocaine addiction.
