My wife and I had a couple over for a New Year’s Eve dinner we’ve been friends with for years. The couple are both southerners, strong fiscal/social conservatives, and steadfastedly evangelical.

Both of them point blank said they would never vote for Newt Gingrich even though they detest Obama. She considers it a matter of principle. It is because of his three marriages (cheating on his wife). I tried making the lesser of the two evils argument and it was not pursuasive.

They are both hoping that Santorum does well and are interested in hearing more about him.

Your friends at absolutely right! The South is not particularly fond of Newt and Mrs. #3. We have long memories - heck most of us know Civil War history like it happened yesterday.

It amazes me how the polls say Newt is pulling in SC. I don’t think he could even take FL.

Sorry to hear that Newt is one of only two small government candidates in the race and I would like to see us move to smaller constitutional government. I am hoping Newt will make a comeback after Iowa.

Do they believe that anyone who’s ever broken one of the 10 commandments should get a lifetime ban from public office or any job whatsoever? Would they eat at a restaurant owned by someone who once cheated on his wife? Tim Allen went to prison for drug charges. Do they make sure that they never go to see a movie with Tim Allen? Trying to see where they draw the line here.

I hear about people like this and I want to SCREAM.

What does the concept of Forgiveness mean to them? Or do they prescribe to a cafeteria style Christianity?

I suppose they see themselves as the final judges on a person’s behavior.

Does the issue of abortion resonate with them at ALL?

Makes me ill to think people like this are out there. I’m sure they’re nice folks and I’m sorry — I mean nothing personal by it. But it’s such shortsighted reasoning.

You should have asked these two “evangelicals” what does Jesus do about sinners. The word begins with “For and ends with gives” us.

This is mrs riverdawg’s view, as well as that of many of her Southern, conservative friends.
