Gingrich: 'I feel Romney-boated'
Ap-(Pravda) ^ | 1-1-12 | S.McCafterty

Posted on 01/01/2012 4:40:23 PM PST by VinL

Struggling to reverse a slide in his standing, Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich said Sunday he'd been "Romney-boated" in Iowa and suggested his GOP rival would buy the presidency if he could.

The sharp words against Mitt Romney, a multimillionaire many times over who is in strong contention to win Iowa, come two days before voters here weigh in on the Republican field. It was part of a stepped-up effort by Gingrich to contrast himself with Romney, and the candidate said he would adopt an even more aggressive strategy when the race moves to New Hampshire, the former Massachusetts governor's backyard.

Gingrich's nautical attack was a reference to a 2004 TV ad campaign by a group called the "Swiftboat Veterans for Truth" that bloodied Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. This year, Gingrich has faced an onslaught of negative TV advertisements by a group aligned with Romney.

Asked Sunday whether he felt that he had been "swiftboated," Gingrich replied, "I feel Romney-boated."

It was his second swipe of the day at the Republican frontrunner.

Speaking to reporters after attending morning Mass at the St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, Gingrich said the amount Romney will eventually spend on his various campaigns will rival the spending of billionaire New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"Romney would buy the election if he could," Gingrich said.

Mr. Gingrich’s two ex wives and his (ex-friend, former colleague at the U, and Baptist deacon who helped wife #1 pick up the pieces afterward) would likely disagree with you about Mr. Gingrich’s truthfulness. One question for you: what makes you think he would not throw you, me, and the rest of the country under the bus like he did his two ex-wives if his interests and ours differed? Do you apply your tag line, “Trust God and question everybody else” equally to Mr. Gingrich? Mr. Gingrich did not get “Romney-boated” - he is just facing scrutiny for his choices. Many of us think those choices are relevant to his ability to govern.

“Beating Romney is so easy even McCain did it” True . While Newt is a fat old time political hack like Mc , he lacks the war hero status.

“Look guys, we know what the Republican Rove-ian Establishment is doing since 2008”

2008? All of my life. They dropped the ball with Goldwater and Reagan, and have otherwise strangled all conservative candidacies in the crib. I think the seeds of decay can be seen as early as Theodore Roosevelt. The GOP is not a conservative party. It is simply a more subtle ‘progressive’ party.

Romney-boated? Another example of disturbing choice of words. Out of the Romney-pan, into the Newt.

“For some reason people can’t stop reading massive implications into every little unscripted remark Newt makes.”

Won’t stop. The act is volitional, a deliberate misunderstanding of someone they dislike.

Wasn’t really his choice of words to decide given the question asked:

Asked Sunday whether he felt that he had been “swiftboated,” Gingrich replied, “I feel Romney-boated.”

I wonder if Gingrich realizes that the Swiftboat Veterans' ads against Kerry were also true.

I doubt it.

Happy New Year, Buford. I respectfully reply only because you directed your comment to me.

Many are straining [maybe from hangover -:)] to confabulate Newt’s clever usage of “Romney-boated” into a liberal algorithm.

Doesn’t work.

Newt was asked if he was being “swift-boated”? He said “no, I’m being Romney boated” - drawing a conservative distinction. In this case, a liberal Establishment Rino (Romney) distorting the record of a bone fide conservative— hereinafter, and in all future times, “Romney-boated.”

If some posters are not for Newt, fine. I was once for Sarah and Cain- they too were arbitrarily trashed by some who favored other candidates. Don’t see the need. If one supports a different candidate, support him/her– why trash another conservative? Best,

Vin

Hard to know what Newt specifically meant by that. But one way to take it is that if the attacks were true, he would have said Yes, he did feel like he had been Swift-boated. But since he specifically changed it to Romney-boated, he could have meant, “No, I wasn't Swift-boated because those attacks were true. The attacks from Romney are not true, and therefore I have been Romney-boated.”

Who knows. Especially hard to know when only reading some reporter's version of how that conversation went down. Reporters rarely report accurately, especially when there is inference involved. (Example: Media all reported that Herman Cain had asked Kissinger to be his Secretary of State... I watched the interview, and it was obvious Cain was joking when he said that, but none of the reporters in the room had a sense of humor, so no one laughed, and Cain moved on. But it was reported that Cain was SERIOUS about that.)

There are so many small time choices this time around. Even a flake (Paultard) is having his day.

Trump is the only fellow who could outbuy Obama. And while Trump has money, he’s scarcely a conservative Soros.

I don’t find Newt funny at all. I don’t appreciate him using a term wrongly coined by the Rats to mean.

"He was simply making a pun"

Exactly! The reporter is the one confused (or misleading) about the Swiftboaters telling the truth. Newt's answer was that he was NOT swiftboated but was instead Romney-boated.

There are many things to attack Romney on, but what Newt has chosen to attack lately is very telling. My take is that he’s attacked:

* Romney is a capitalist: complaints that Romney laid people off as part of his Bain business - sounded like a typical dem

* Romney is deploying too much ad money. If Newt had it, he’d spend it. He comes off as a whiner. I want to like him - thought he could be my Cain alternative but c’mon - put on your big boy pants.

Now Romney is swiftboating him? Save it for the Wisconsin primary - least there would be plenty of cheese with the whine.

How much sympathy will a Republican get from the media whining away like this? If this is all the fight Newt has in him, stick the fork in. He’s done.

Yeah... the vets on the Swift boats told the truth about Kerry. Romney on his galley tells lies about Newt.

Part of Newt’s problem is that his past IS so checkered that when someone like Romney throws a random hunk of B.S. his way, a lot of people assume it sticks without bothering to sift through the gnarly facts. And this is just Romney. Wait till it’s Obama (if Newt gets to the next level).
