Americans buy record numbers of guns for Christmas

Americans bought record numbers of guns last month amid an apparent surge in popularity for weapons as Christmas presents.

By Nick Allen, Los Angeles

7:17PM GMT 01 Jan 2012

According to the FBI, over 1.5 million background checks on customers were requested by gun dealers to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System in December. Nearly 500,000 of those were in the six days before Christmas.

It was the highest number ever in a single month, surpassing the previous record set in November.

On Dec 23 alone there were 102,222 background checks, making it the second busiest single day for buying guns in history.

The actual number of guns bought may have been even higher if individual customers took home more than one each.

Explanations for America's surge in gun buying include that it is a response to the stalled economy with people fearing crime waves. Another theory is that buyers are rushing to gun shops because they believe tighter firearms laws will be introduced in the future.

All I know is, the indoor ranges this week were packed! Some had to wait 2 hours to get on.

Hubby and I brought rifles to shoot while we waited to get on the pistol range (where most of the log-jam was).

On a side note: I saw a guy with a Kel Tec folding .223. Looks like it might be my new favorite!

Random thoughts, in no particular order:

How many are Fast & Furious sales?

I recall a graph showing the percentage of households owning guns over the past 50 years, broken down by “Conservatives” and “Liberals.” Conservatives have always been around 45%, while Liberals were around 20-25% - until Obama’s election that is! The liberals are now about neck and neck.

In uber-liberal Washington State here, we have one of the highest percentages of adults with a CCW permit: 15%.

I agree with several here - even the Libs know that something wicked this way comes. My tagline says it all.

In the past 2 weeks I have purchased nine hundred 12 ga. rifled slugs, and I have never been deer hunting one day in my life.

By all means get that book written.

“How could this happen? TO ME??? I’m special...everyone told me so! Bad things aren’t supposed to happen to me!”

That self-esteem BS has messed up the lives of a lot of young people. Confronted with the reality of not being as special as the sun or moon, a lot of them have a good bit of difficulty handling life’s burdens.

And just why would you be taking a rifle and revolver out in a boat? Mmmmm? The only gun one would use is a shotgun for duck hunting.
The lake I was referring to is a privately owned lake on my BIL's property. We can hunt wild life at our leisure during the appropriate season...and feral hogs anytime. You do know that this has gotten to be a very old and unamusing kind of post?

Amusement wasn't my intention. I'm glad you got it. And BTW...I'm old.

Are you a hall monitor or a cop?

Just someone who has wearied of the seemingly never-ending unclever and unamusing posts about guns “tragically” lost in a boat accident.

I suspect I am not alone.

Try to think of something new.

So am I. Age does not excuse one from using tired formulaic language.

I lost mine when Muslims accosted me in the AZ desert. They stole them all and threatened to behead my family and rape my kids if I called the cops. Knowing they have a documented history around the world of doing that, I feared for my family’s safety and complied. Unfortunately I have no idea where the guns went once they took them.

I’m still traumatized by it. Worst part, they wore Burkas and traditional face coverings so I have no clue as to what they really looked like.

Tragic really.

Wonder why? Does everyone know something, maybe something bad is coming?

Of course, the brain dead libs will call this and all things “prepper” as mass hysteria.

Just wait until boats start having gun accidents.

OK...then you will understand the most direct approach. I bought all of my weapons legally through a registered gun shop. They can be traced to me. If anyone comes for them...they were lost in a boat accident. No one but me knows where there at. It never tires as a post. Verstehen?

I guess Americans see the writing on the wall. Government can always become tyrannical or unconcerned with foreign threats to its citizens or both. And then there’s the threat of other citizens who think that there’s no such thing as private property rights...
