English As Official US Language: Perry Says, 'I Can Agree With That' By NBC's Carrie Dann

MASON CITY, IOWA -- Gov. Rick Perry on Friday appeared to endorse making English the official language of the United States, agreeing with a questioner who put forward a strongly worded defense of the idea.

"I don't know how the rest of the conservatives in the room feel," said a questioner at Perry's last event of the day. "Personally, I'm fed up with seeing the directions on every single product on every single shelf of every single store written in foreign languages. And I'd like to say English should be the official language of government in this country." "That is a statement. That's not a question. And I can agree with that," Perry responded without elaborating further.

A spokesperson for the governor said that while Perry has in the past been open to changing the law to make English the official language, he has typically said he views other economic and social issues as more pressing matters for legislation.

Perry, accompanied by his wife, daughter and son-in-law, spoke to about 50 Republicans at a fundraiser for the Cerro Gordo County GOP in Mason City. Also in attendance was Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, the influential west Iowa conservative whose endorsement has long been sought after by Republican presidential candidates.

Did they say that English should be the official language? I have never given Romney or Gingrich a pass. I have been staunchly critical of them. Perry is better than either of them, but hes nowhere near perfect. (For the record, I could vote for for Cain, Perry, or Bachmann, but not the other two.)

This BS of trying to tie Perry to the border issues is beyond ridiculous.

And if by hoot you mean an owl, then sure, because owls are wise.

Ricky is the worst of a terrible bunch.

Go ask Mr. Owl.

BTW, you want to be careful calling a Texan namby-pamby. You better do it anonymously on-line.

Amazing how people hate Perry but give Romney,Cain and Newt a pass.

You're right, no one has been critical of those three here. At all.

“Personally, I'm fed up with seeing the directions on every single product on every single shelf of every single store written in foreign languages. And I'd like to say English should be the official language of government in this country.”

And now Rick Perry wants to dictate to private sector companies that that can only print labels and instructions in English.

He has gone off the edge and wants to dispose of the First Amendment.

Funny, He's never supported that in here in Texas. Might lead one to believe that he'd say anything to get elected.

Lets ask Cain what he thinks.
Let’s ask any of them.

Lets ask Obama

If the Founding Fathers didn’t see fit to make English the official language of this country, far be it from me to second guess them.

The Constitution doesn't state that marriage is between one man and one woman. I think the Founding Fathers presumed that was a given and there would never come a time when perversion would become so widespread that the institution of marriage would be altered by sexual deviants.

I think a similar case could be made for America's language and they saw no need to codify that which was patently obvious. Since the Constitution is written in English, I believe that to be evidence that the Founding Fathers wanted the federal government to function using only that language.

I gave a specific reason why I don't support him.

And what an exquisite reason it was! He's "namby-pamby"!

Excuse me if I call you out on such absurdity, but you asked for it.

And as for the price of talk, I wouldn't put much of a price on the level of your analysis.

The end of this will bear one of us out, and when it is all said and done, I hope you like the taste of crow. You'll be eating it.

Meanwhile, I have to say that after your last response, I have no respect left for you or your posts.

If there's one thing I've had enough of it's the "Don't mess with Texas" crap spouted by on-line tough guys. Considering how messed-with Texas is by its southern neighbors, and what pussies I've met from the big-hat no-cattle bunch of loudmouths, I can't believe anyone from Texas doesn't know the rest of the country laughs at that infantile tough talk.

Hilarious how you tell me to be careful about only saying such a thing online...thus doing just that online.

I don't care if a man's from Texas or anywhere else. I measure the man by what he says and what he does AS a man. Tough-talking about one's region is the stuff of people who've got nothing of their own and have to rely on the accomplishments of their regional neighbors.

I don't measure a man by the accident of where he was born. Only Internet drugstore cowboy types do that. Like real men, I stand on my own achievments and mind. If Perry can't stand that, and his supporters can't stop whining when someone calls him out for his mushiness, well, tough, Texas.

Perry is a weak candidate. His being from Texas doesn't make me dislike himm, but it sure doesn't make me think he's better than any other American just because of where he lives.

This is entirely fabricated from you fevered mind. Rick Perry NEVER said any such thing, and I think you well know it. What does that make you?

The Founding Fathers considered making the English the official language. They never discussed homosexual marriage. Completely different.

Just for giggles... it’s “secede”, which could be viewed as succeeding.

We should secede without Perry, and I’d go so far as to say without most of Austin too. We can follow up by re-conquering Austin and our southern border.

So you're saying you don't understand the phrase, which I chose intentionally. Sorry, didn't mean to go over your head. Here's the definition:

Definitions of namby-pamby (adj) nam·by-pam·by [ nàmbee pámbee ] 1.weak: feeble and lacking strength of character

What is absurd about using a phrase like 'namby-pamby' to describe someone who is just that?

The phrase sure seemed to get you all hot n bothered, so what does that make you, lil' fella? Someone without self-control, apparently.
