Mitt Romney has now jumped to his biggest lead ever over President Obama in a hypothetical Election 2012 matchup. Its also the biggest lead a named Republican candidate has held over the incumbent in Rasmussen Reports surveying to date.
The latest national telephone survey finds that 45% of Likely U.S. Voters favor the former Massachusetts governor, while 39% prefer the president. Ten percent (10%) like some other candidate in the race, and six percent (6%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
A week ago, Romney trailed Obama 44% to 41%. The week before that, he held a slight 43% to 42% edge over the president. The two candidates have been essentially tied in regular surveys since January, but Romney remains the only GOP hopeful to lead Obama in more than one survey. Despite Romneys current six-point lead, his latest level of support is in line with the 38% to 45% he has earned in matchups with the president this year. However, Obamas 39% is a new low: Prior to this survey, his support has ranged from 40% to 46% in matchups with Romney.
A generic Republican candidate holds a narrow lead over the president again this week as has been the case all but three times in weekly tracking since late May. Obama leads all the other named GOP candidates by as little as seven and as much as 15 percentage points. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Governor Rick Perry and businessman Herman Cain have all surged ahead of the president at one point but did not maintain those leads.

Mormons dont serve in the military. Refuse to serve in the military. Let someone else do it.
****
Well, we’re in the military and we’ve seen mormons serving — just not very RICH ones - not those with fortunes like Romney’s, or multiple vactions homes like Romney. Stuff like that.
Although I don’t begrudge them for it. Someone has to work and pay the taxes to support an Army.
Like I said, put your money where your mouth is because I KNOW Obama's lackeys will blow endless bullet holes into Gingrich's campaign. Coupled with the fact that he isn't even physically attractive, not enough people will turn out for him, thereby yielding the election to Obama.
” What Newt said was that he didnt think the American people would go for a scorched earth deport policy. And he is perhaps right about that. He didnt say Free Republic people wouldnt go for it. And he clearly said he would be ok with a state that did go for it....” <<<
” But, deportation is about a 65-35 or 70-30 loser depending on who is polled and how the wording is - nationwide. But secure border is a big winner nationwide and is the necessary first step anyway.” <<<
” Everything else is just a pee pee measuring contest to see who can talk toughest on the issue - but wont make a bit of difference in reality.” <<<
Another elegant, spot on moment from you for the factually inclined.
Unlike previous Republican nominees, Romney will never have the support of Free Republic.
Ha
And ain’t it ironic that it was perhaps Bachmann who won the pee pee contest with her tough talk on the issue? (yeah, like Minnesotans understand it anyway....)
Newt is his own handler whereas Zero's handlers are Valerie Jarret & David Axelrod & of course his tele-prompter.
Zero's only response will be his famous, “That just isn't true”. We'll make a game of how many various ways he responds with a form of “That just isn't true”, because that's all he'll be able to do is LIE about his record and wine when Newt points out his corruption and incompetence in Real Time.
Prime Time Zero Bashing at it's finest. That will be major must see tv. And Newt will win all the Southern State Primaries.
Believe me, I will be more than happy to admit that I was wrong if all of these soccer mom types come out to vote for Newt. I just know too many who will only vote based on appearance and we haven’t seen Newt standing next to Obama yet. I just fear he’ll look like a very un-cool short and fat guy. So, I hope the dems in your family do indeed vote for him, in fact, tell them to change party registration in order to vote in our closed primary!
” You think I’m boarding the Romney train willingly? Go take a hike. “ <<<
I believe my post was clear enough. The tolerance for Romney around here, at the very first sound of incoming, is at stench level. If you were concerned that I pinged Jim Robinson, that was only because of his own first page post.
It was not to alienate you, or Glock, or to dog whistle powers against you.
Most of us are interested in fighting this out before we throw in any towels for Romney. Not all of us, but most of us.
To answer your question, I wouldn’t be caught dead giving ground and conceding my vote for Romney, on FR, or anywhere else in any case, at this early date. Personally, I can’t imagine encouraging the RINO faction by toying with the idea and feeding the enemy with the worst case scenario.
I’m not sure that poll is so profound. I think Sponge Bob Square Pants would poll higher than Obama right now.
I told you I am not voting for Romney in the primary. how many times do I have to say that?
In the general - I am A B O, even if Mumia Abu Jamal were running against Obama.
Are you having a hard time grasping this?
unattractive guy - weird comment.
Yes, Newt Gringrich is overweight and has a relatively unattractive appearance compared Mitt Romney. That difference will cost him at least 5 percent of the vote right from the start.
There is abundant history to show that a decisive fraction of the electorate makes their choices based upon superficial appearances and trivialities.
The appearance of youth, vigor, and beauty will tend to outrank most everything else. We are all instinctively programmed to respond this way and our culture reinforces this behavior.
It is quite difficult to override those tendencies. The most successful option to do so is with swaggering masculine dominant behaviour - to which we are also instinctively programmed to respond.
None of this has much to do with issues or ideology or even competence of candidates. That's one reason that our selection (if it is a real choice at all) is such a crapshoot.
Same here. I would go so far as to say anyone to the right of Fidel Castro vs Obama in the general.
Thankfully, I know of no female who prefers your Romney over Newt. The next white sale at Dillards is a priority over Marxism, and Romney’s crystal clear socialism, on record, to no one I know. You are my exception, of course.
When you come up with a comparative study showing your Romney guy in a match race against Newt, on advancing conservatives, in any contest, give us all a ring-a-ling. Try not to bog in your soap opera against Newt, but match the actual field duty. The personal stuff is yesterday’s rag, has been overcome, and is fodder for Neanderthals who choose to ignore the ending, the personal conversion and obvious happiness Newt has attained with both his wife and his Church.
Look, Drew person was in a lather. I had to ping you because I hear the rule is to do so, when another poster is mentioned. You were mentioned.
I get that you are not a Romney voter! I can’t help it if I don’t like all the worst case general election scenario for Romney that is going on around here on FR today. The whole darn discussion of the general election tolerance for Romney is nothing short of a hand off to the RINO cheerleaders too damn soon, before the fight, at the first sign of trouble. NOT YOU.
We know who is promoting Romney against the leading non-Romney today. It’s simply not helpful. Just sayin’.
Post #276, is why I am on the war path.
” Bet with Mitt, he likes makes bets. Who makes bets like this? lol “ <<<<
Beautifully said.
I am not in a very good mood with all the barely stealth promotion efforts for Romney on FR today, by way of discussing the pipe pondering of the general election worst case scenarios. Ridiculous trap. Helps one candidate, Romney.
I believe it’s currently true, but it won’t hold. There is so much out there to hammer Romney on. With Romney as the nominee, it takes away the health care issue, which should be a major advantage for a Republican candidate. He will also get torn to shreds for all the people he laid off when he was at Bain Capital. Also, Massachusetts was 47th in job creation while he was governor. I haven’t even mentioned the crazy Mormon stories that Dateline NBC and 20/20 will run this summer if he wins the nomination.
