Iraqi Sunni leaders denounce PM Maliki

The Iraqi vice president accused of running death squads hit back at the prime minister on Tuesday in a sectarian feud that risks wrecking Iraq's fragile balance of power, just days after U.S. troops finally withdrew.

In dismissing the charges against him as fabricated and part of machinations by premier Nuri al-Maliki, Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi evoked wider regional tensions by appealing to the Arab League, a body dominated by his fellow Sunni Muslims, and denouncing "foreign agendas" in Iraq—code for Shi'ite Iran.

As Hashemi declared his willingness to face judges in Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region—where he traveled after an arrest warrant was issued for him in Baghdad—one of his allies was lambasting Maliki, leader of the majority Shi'ite bloc, for acting like Saddam Hussein and risking renewed sectarian strife. …

The crisis risks unraveling a fragile power-sharing deal among Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish blocs that have struggled to overcome tensions since sectarian slaughter drove Iraq to the edge of civil war in the years after Saddam fell in 2003. …

Anyone want to give me odds on a breakup into three autonomous or federated regions? Anyone want to start a pool on how many months it will be before this happens?

I am expecting an Iranian/Iraqi Anschluss, myself.

I can imagine that being attempted, but I think the Kurds and the Sunnis might have something to say about that. There are a number of Kurds in Iran too, that might get a bit feisty if this kind of move were made. Also, it would encourage Israel to make sneaky moves in Iran. Don’t know if Iran is stupid enough to try that. Nut Job maybe, but Kamenei?

Hmmm... Maybe we'll see a second Iran-Iraq war? Worse things could happen.

i-bama has already ceded Iraq to Iran. There will be a bloodbath. Iran would like nothing more than a Kurdish genocide. They have been trying to achieve just that for years and so has Turkey.

I`d think the separation into three autonomous states would be likely, were it not for Iran breathing down everyone`s neck. My prediction is Iran will absorb the 60% that comprises the Shia regions within a couple years. The remaining Sunnis and Kurds will fight annexation and may coalesce into a marriage of convenience to keep themselves out of the Iranian orbit.

Whatever happens is going to be an ugly, bloody mess.

“It will be the end of Obama”

You`re implying the sheep will even pay attention. The sex life of the Kardashians, which transgender freak is up next on “Dancing With the Stars,” and Lindsey Lohan`s escapades are far more important matters for celebrity-obsessed Americans.

Plus, the “media” will go into overdrive to herd the sheep into the “Bush`s Fault” corner of Propaganda Pasture.

Does anyone remember Muqtadda Al Sadyr?

Despite his hatred for America and early aggression against our forces with his personal “militia”, he seems to have been afforded special status as a protected species and apparently orders were given to treat him with great deference and respect despite his ruthless criminality.

Is he Sunni or Shiite?

I have long had a hunch that as soon as the US moved out, he would take over as the Supreme Ayatollah of Iraq, probably as a province of Iran, and immediately prepare for their final intifada against Israel, for the express purpose of imposing the “Final solution” on global Jewry.

Then, I opine, the World is going to see what the fulfillment of Ezekiel 38 & 39 looks like.

The global consortium of the Arab League, Muslim Brotherhood and the Obama machine has big plans for the World (including US, as you might suspect).

Lest we despair, however - remember that the “Law of unintended consequences” sometimes applies to the bad guys, too.

You are right there, I continually still hear Obama is doing as good as he could with what Bush started... Drives me nuts! I am continually asking how they figure that with Dems having complete control for 2 years and spending all that money is it still possibly Bushes Fault?? This is coming from some Republicans I know, but most of these are dems will never vote for anybody running on the Republican side currently. I am still concerned for our future and the importance of the upcoming election... If all the Dems vote Dem ticket and they mobilize the 46% on the government dole by saying which ever Republican wins is going to cut a big chunk out of the recipients and amounts, we are in deep trouble...

Will point to posts 11, and 12 as one possible beginning within possibly two years, though another possibility would be sustained violence breaking out before the two year time-frame would be reached. Please note, mine is a guess.

The current actions are warranted. The Suni must be called out and tried. He is either guilty or not guilty and the trial will decide.

The point you miss or refuse to acknowledge is that the man is being tried. He is not being bumped off. There is a high degree of order and the government appears to be functioning.

The mission is being accomplished. To those of you who consider only instant gratification, refer to today’s Syria thread where we learn that power is slipping from the grasp of tha Alawites and Bashar Assad.

The historical process set underway by George Bush is being accomplished. I know it is hard, but you should try to grasp the reality.

History is a process, not an event

Yep. You know Iran is going to grab those oil fields. Then it won’t be long before the Shias and the Sunni’s are going at it again.

Oddly enough and you are going to hate to hear this because I hate to say it but Joe Biden had a moment of clarity a while back and floated the idea of setting up 3 autonomous states in the beginning. At the time everyone poo pooed the idea but who knows?

The 3-State proposition floated near the beginning of the Iraq invasion had some merit to it IMHO.

Wasn’t Iraq essentially set up that way prior to a British Mandate that artificially united them following WW-II?

Actually I thought that 3-state idea had merit. It was a rare, random act of lucidity for Biden. The 3-state idea locks in specific, internationally recognized boundaries and a national identity for each subgroup. The reason I like that idea is my assumption the future holds for -- as one FReeper put it -- an "anschluss" of the Shia region of Iraq into Iran.
