Palin, Jeb Bush, mulling presidential options? (Jeb being approach by key people)

Could a candidate with excellent name recognition and the ability to raise millions almost immediately still have a shot if they entered the race today?

Sarah Palin thinks so. And Jeb Bush is going to be visited by some very powerful party insiders and asked - again - to reconsider his decision not to run for president.

In an interview with Fox Business News, Palin refused to shut the door while saying that it wasn't too late to jump in:

Any chance we can see you making a play, even after Iowa or New Hampshire?" Bolling asked. "There's still plenty of time, Governor."

"You know, it's not too late for folks to jump in," Palin replied. "And I don't know, you know, it - who knows what will happen in the future?"

As for Jeb Bush, he has not encouraged the latest round of speculation, but his Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal - almost a campaign style economic piece - that a lot of conservatives saw as a strong defense of capitalism has people asking why he can't still make a run:

Dear God, Please have Palin get into the race. She is the one who can beat Obama. Bachmann and Santorum are others that could beat Obama. The rest will lose to Obama for sure.

I guess that no one told these folks that the filing deadlines in the some states have already closed and there is no clamor for them to run anyway. If anyone thinks they can slide into this in the middle of the process with zero money or any ground game and win the nomination, they are mistaken.

If Bush jumped in he would be the instant favorite of the establishment. He would replace Romney, not a bad thing at that. But his defense of capitalism notwithstanding, I just don't think I can stomach another rino bush.

“Key people” = establishment types who detest Palin, Perry, Cain, and even Gingrich for not being sufficiently “one of us”. Mitt’s a member in good standing but might be a little past his sell-by date if the aroma coming from his campaign is any indication. Jeb would be wise to soft-pedal this one, IMHO.

Me too. At first I thought you typed 250K....lol. I was thinking, “well I certainly can give her some cash but 250K....no way. :-) This entire Republican race will change dramatically. She really needs to get in the race immediately because I just heard on Fox News that Ron Paul may win Iowa. Now I know that it won’t make a difference as he won’t get the nomination, but I am worried that he MIGHT run third party. They just said that Paul would get 21 percent, Romney would get 30 percent and Obama would get 44 percent. Of course why they are using Romney I don’t know, but they said they used him because he has the biggest percentage out of the candidates.....I don’t know if I believe that or not. Anyway, Paul CANNOT run 3rd Party. I really hope he does NOT!!!!

I think it's a very long shot for Jeb and no way for Palin. But the scenario that would bypass the primaries, especially with no more winner-take-all results, has Bush as a compromise dark horse at a brokered convention that fails to pick a candidate on the first ballot. We came close in 1976, when Ford beat Reagan by a mere hundred votes out of two thousand. Regardless of primary outcomes, All delegates are free to vote their consciences after the first ballot.

There is no historical example that anyone can point at to show that this “jump in super late and pray for a brokered convention” concept would remotely work. The last brokered convention was in ‘76 between Ford and Reagan and both men competed in all the states to have enough delegates at the convention to battle it out. In the end, the establishment won, which it usually does. Either Palin or Bush would come up very short on delegates, if any to go to the convention with to fight. It would be an embarrassing defeat.
