McCain did not lose the election because he was considered a moderate. He lost because he was a BAD choice to go against the cool & hip persona of OBAMA. Not realizing that same comparison between Newt and Obama is a huge oversight. You give the average voter much more credit for voting “policy” than is warranted. They are not analyzing policy as you do here. Unfortunate, but in this culture, that’s the way it is. There are just too many uninformeds and stupids who will pull the lever for O again, unless they at the very least, have a likeable candidate to otherwise vote for. That would not be Newt.

You are missing the point. Mitt and Obama are equally bad. Even an outside chance at beating Obama or equivalent is what I desire, and I suspect many here desire. So I'll even go for the long-shot, rather than a RINO who will not change a thing for the better.
