DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, an investor in some of the world's top companies, on Monday unveiled a $300 million stake purchase in fast-growing microblogging site Twitter, gaining another foothold in the global media industry.
Alwaleed, a nephew of the Saudi king with a personal net worth estimated by Forbes magazine in March to be just below $20 billion, already owns a 7-percent stake in News Corp and has unveiled plans to start a cable news channel.
The Twitter stake, bought jointly by Alwaleed and his Kingdom Holding Co investment firm, resulted from "months of negotiations," Kingdom said in a statement.
Applying an $8 billion valuation figure for Twitter used by some analysts, the investment by Alwaleed and Kingdom amounts to a 3.75-percent stake.

He’ll enjoy my constant tweets about “koran toilet paper.”
And p(resident) Omoslem riding Air Carpet One.
Where exactly does Twitter get revenue from?
If there’s any photographer-Freepers, what’s the best way to photograph a toilet bowl painted to look like Mohammed?
I’ve tweeted more mohammed drawings than I can count.
Usually, it’s mohammed as a dog, or pig.
In most cases, he’s eating bacon.
What’s revenue?
*snort*
Seriesly, though, how does Twitter make money? What services do they charge for?
Well, they are going to do, “promoted tweets,” or advertising. In general, I think the idea is that if they become influential enough, they’ll make money somehow.
P.S. The thought occurred to me that they’re data-mining tweets for salable information, but is there really a diamond in that manure pile?
You are correct in that there are reports for trending topics, you can pay to slide your message in among the trending topics if your coffers are deep enough. Consumers are very keen to this though and will stop using the concept once it gets filled will commercials and jumps the shark.
It is already becoming obsolete and “uncool” with the younger demos 15-29 who are already onto to Tumblr (think stream of consciousness blog with follow capabilities).
.....and please don’t forget to mention those padded toilet seats with passages of the Koran imprinted on them with a pastel floral motif.... you’ll be sitting pretty for that truly royal flush, as befitting a Saudi prince.....
Hmmm, now you’ve got me thinking of the dot-com bubble of the 90’s. Be interesting to see what return Prince Abooboo gets on his $300 mil.
Don´t use it. Won´t use it now.
How does one behead using Twitter?
I wonder how much influence he has over News Corp/Fox News with a 7% stake...
When was the last time Fox dealt seriously with Islamism, the Muslim Brotherhood, or Muslim Brotherhood organs in America?
