Newt Gingrich promises to revive the Gipper's economic plan -- and then some
Newt Gingrich's economic plan is not Reaganesque. It is not, as so many of his Republican presidential rivals' claim their plans to be, inspired by Reaganomics. It is Reaganomics, cryogenically frozen in 1981, thawed 30 years later, and pumped full of Newt-style steroids in order to save the American people from slow growth. The plan features massive tax cuts (which would largely benefit businesses and the wealthy), less government spending (through the privatization of entitlement programs), interest-rate hikes, and rampant deregulation.
The foundation is classic supply-side, trickle-down, Laffer-curve economics, which Gingrich's economic advisers predict will unleash a boom that will eventually generate enough tax revenue to balance the federal budget. How big will that boom be, you ask? What do the campaign's projections show? "If you go back to the Reagan years, from 1983, that's our projection of what the boom would look like--exactly," says Peter Ferrara, a former Reagan aide who helped draft the Gingrich plan.
~~snip~~
What does appear is a package of tax cuts much deeper than Romney or Perry propose. Like Perry, Gingrich would let taxpayers choose between the current income-tax system or a flat rate. Perry's rate is 20 percent; Gingrich's is 15 percent. Romney would eliminate taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest for taxpayers who earn less than $200,000 a year; Gingrich eliminates them entirely. Romney's plan cuts the corporate income-tax rate to 25 percent, while Perry's would be 20 percent. Gingrich would drop the corporate rate all the way to 12.5 percent--lower than even Ron Paul has proposed.

WORKS for ME...and while your at it Newt, get that friggin corn syrup out my CocaCola and that friggin corn oil out my gasoline....
Jeez. Then I’d have to dig out my suspenders and yellow ties.
I'd love to see the EPA be pared back to its essential functions of protecting the environment and identifying/cleaning toxic waste sites. And to see the FDA also returned to its original function, to ensure a safe food supply and drug safety. So many government agencies have grown far beyond their original roles of protecting citizens, and have taken on the function of trying to control citizens' lives. Agencies such as the Dept. of Education, which have no apparent function, should be eliminated altogether.
Have you noticed all the 80’s sounding music that is making a comeback? Go Newt!!!
I can’t find anything wrong with this plan, no matter how hard the MSM spins it.
On a lighter note, someone should PhotoShop Newt in an 80s hair band...in the spirit of the headline.
Last time I checked, it wasn’t up to the POTUS to reduce the size of state governments.
And just at the cusp of another cold war, too. Not to mention another failed Dem presidency and major recession. It’s 1979 again!
Hate to break it to you, but Newt is not Reagan. Far from it. Remember how he squandered the 1994 victory with his inconsistent, insincere follow-up? Remember how he resigned his seat a disgraced hypocrite?
I THINK that maybe 0bama is still worse, but the difference between the Republican candidate and the Democratic one is fast becoming a distinction without a difference.
Those are GOOD things!
:-)
What are you referring to? I've never heard Newt say "I am for socialism!"
1. We are in a far worse place than we were in 1979. Our debt and government are far larger and more powerful than they were.
2. Reagan had to deal with a democrat House and Senate. They outspent him. We can't afford to go through that again. Congress must become conservative. That will be harder than defeating Obama.
3. Reagan and the democrat controlled Congress also kicked the Social Security can down the road. That is no longer an option.
3. I'll vote for Gingrich if he is the nominee but I have the sneaky feeling he is the same animal he was in the mid 1990s and thinks the Republicans can “fix” the federal government as it is currently constructed and make it work better. It's too late for the scalpel, we need the chainsaw.
4. No matter who the nominee and eventual President, I fear our fate is in the hands of the Senate. That means Republicans must have a 60 seat majority and 30 of those need to be conservatives. How many conservatives do we have now? 8? 10 at the most?
It’s like going into the sickroom, throwing open the windows for sun and air, and removing the leeches from the unfortunate patient.
Sometimes that is enough.
Remove the quack physicians and their devices, and nature will do the rest.
I want a new episode of Moonlighting.
I know this is off topic, but...
I agree about Michelle Bachmann...good strong conservative...but her voice pattern is really starting to get annoying! Not as annoying as Obama, but it is getting there. It has the same pattern over and over again that almost verges on sounding whiny.
Don’t get me wrong I could have her as President, but I don’t think I could listen to her any more than I can listen to Obama. I know this is incredibly shallow, but she needs a serious vocal adjustment.
Wow, that crazy old Newt. What a leftist, progressive RINO to propose this plan.
(sarc tag shouldn’t be needed)
Yep. The majority of home improvement jobs I'm getting are seniors, or DINK's with at least one of them having a government job.
Amen. I was just emailing my state congress critter, reminding him that most of the folks that show up at his open houses are TEA party folks and we elected him.
He beat a 14 year demonRAT by 100 votes in W PA in a district that had been demonRAT since before I started even watching politics in the 1950s.
We are trying to get school vouchers and Voter ID and a few other things passed and he knows we are watching and emailing and donating and phone calling and voting and we ain't going to sleep and let "our critters" alone.
I've written more emails to my guy than I ever did to the demonRAT because I knew that the demonRAT didn't care about me, because he thought he was untouchable.
My demonRAT guy played 2nd base for my Little League Team back in the 70s and he has come to my house several times since he got his hat handed to him, vowing to "listen" to the voters if we give him another opportunity.
He is a recovering demonRAT, but I still can't trust him, because given a hard choice, his RAT party will always win over his "principles".
