Newt Is the Problem
NRO ^ | 121111 | Avik Roy

Posted on 12/12/2011 4:03:09 PM PST by Fred

Newt Gingrich’s rise to the top of the GOP polls is fueled, in part, by Republicans’ mistrust of Mitt Romney. Romney’s signature Massachusetts health-care law, the model for Obamacare, leads many to wonder whether Romney can challenge the president on this most important domestic issue. But any conservative who opposes Romney because of Romneycare should oppose Gingrich with thrice the intensity: Newt Gingrich is one of the principal abettors of the exploding health-care entitlement state we face today. Indeed, it’s not clear what would be worse for the cause of entitlement reform: Newt’s losing to Obama or Newt’s beating him.

Wrong.

The GOP E does not like Gingrich because many of them know him personally and they . . . wait for it . . . don’t like him.

That is all.

What, if anything, has Nanny-State Newt EVER done to make the total US Federal Government significantly smaller?

Choosing Newt over Romney doesn’t mean you have to block out facts you don’t like or agree with.

Exactly what are you referring to? Newt’s plan is close to Ryan’s plan. “Paul Ryan (and the House GOP’s) Medicare Plan

Like Ryan and the House GOP, Newt supports a premium support model for Medicare. However, he wants seniors to have the choice to opt into the new system or to stay in traditional Medicare.

Newt agrees wholeheartedly with Rep. Ryan that we must give our seniors more choices than the current one-size-fits-all Medicare model. Both concur that creating the opportunity for seniors to buy private insurance is the key to both improving care and lowering costs.

The one key difference is that under Newt’s plan, as outlined in his 21st Century Contract with America, seniors will also have the choice to stay in the current Medicare system or choose a private insurance plan with support from the government to pay the premiums. The other difference is that Newt believes that seniors should have this option starting next year, not in ten years.

Newt has also pledged to repeal Obamacare.

And, he says, replace it with something that out-Obamacares Obamacare.

His website says his goal is universal coverage. Now try to think of the ways you make everybody have health insurance without making everybody have health insurance.

“If Steyn is against Gingrich that is good enough for me.”

I’ve read Steyn’s book. A great must read. He would practically do anything to see Obama defeated.

Apparently this includes wish Myth Romney to be the nominee.

Sorry, he’s brilliant but just fantastically wrong about Gingrich and his support for Romney.

You ankle biting lightweights can claim Gingrich is not a conservative to the hounds come home.

Forgot to add to my previous post:

First, fabulous name-calling!

Second, what if the problem isn't so much that Gingrich isn't conservative, but that he's . . . crazy? Unstable? Undisciplined? Egomaniacal? Unreliable? Untrustworthy? Just plain weird?

What if that is really the point?

I mean, it is possible to be conservative and still have, well, a problem.

Just sayin'.

American taxpayers already pick up the tab for MEDICAID recipients. Hospital ER’s do not turn away the poor and there are many clinics that absorb them too. In many respects we already have universal healthcare. Newt is NOT forcing anyone to purchase health insurance.

I know you must still be in mourning over Cain..but the fact is the polls are leaning towards Newt, Romney and Paul...who do you support now?

... “if he repels no more than McCain”, obummer wins. Was that not what happened before with those numbers.

Well, yeah - that *is* what happened. This is not a 2008 redux, though. Obama no longer has the carefully crafted image of the vaguely-defined bringer of hope and change. The hope turned out to be false and the change wasn't welcome.

John Kerry (of Vietnam fame) got 51% of the female vote. I suspect that's close to what Obama will get this time (and then only because of heavy support from minority women).

Unfortunately, Freddie, if that’s your real name, for some odd reason Saint Conservatus is not running this year, and we have to settle on someone.

I have a little different take on your question, I think.

For the most part, the choice seems to be framed as to support or not support Gingrich.

As you pointed out, unless one considers voting for Romney (and, believe me, a lot of people out there are going to be giving Romney a second look over the next weeks and months), there is no choice but Gingrich.

But supporting him as the nominee doesn’t, in my view, mean giving him a pass. He’s got a lot of bullcrap to answer for and I say make him answer for it. Take him to task here, even in our little corner of the world. It’s not chopped liver.

Put it out there that we’re not ignoring his problems, rather we’re well aware of them, they concern us, and don’t take the fact that we’re going to hire you in spite of them as carte blanche to continue these stunts in the future.

IOW, at some point, all we can do as a movement is try to preserve our political and moral authority to hold this man that, in some ways, we have no choice but to support, accountable in a fierce way.

Because he’s a loose cannon.

Some may so “oh, so just tear down our own.” Bull. Talking about what’s gone wrong and WHAT WE EXPECT/DEMAND in the future doesn’t tear Gingrich down. It will make him stronger, actually. And it won’t hurt him a bit in the general election — that’s already it’s own ballgame.

“Gingrich’s goal is to achieve what “even Obamacare could not achieve”: UNIVERSAL COVERAGE.”

Please show us in Gingrich’s words, where he says he will provide Universal Health Coverage.

LOL...as Palin would say...”make’n stuff up again”
