BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, Texas (AP) -- The bloody drug war in Mexico shows no sign of relenting. Neither do calls for tighter border security amid rising fears of spillover violence.
This hardly seems a time the U.S. would be willing to allow people to cross the border legally from Mexico without a customs officer in sight. But in this rugged, remote West Texas terrain where wading across the shallow Rio Grande undetected is all too easy, federal authorities are touting a proposal to open an unmanned port of entry as a security upgrade.
By the spring, kiosks could open up in Big Bend National Park allowing people from the tiny Mexican town of Boquillas del Carmen to scan their identity documents and talk to a customs officer in another location, at least 100 miles away.

It seems that everyone who lives in the area sees this as a low-risk way to improve the lives of people there. Applying a one-size-fits-all policy to things is not one of the better aspects of Federal bureaucracy.

I’m not sure the concept of unmanned border post works all that well. Doesn’t there need to be someone there to take pictures, run the iTunes ID app (some democrat actually wants Apple to ban the thing, lol!), and hand out the ID, pass out and discuss the merits of voter registration applications, tout all the free money programs they can get? Shouldn’t someone knowledgeable on the subject be there to discuss the best emergency rooms for different ailments?
Because they are being a political hack bashing one of the contenders that would do something about this all for fill in the blank ___________ they’re candidate they want and will bash all for them.

There are, maybe, 100 people in Boquillas del Carmen. And there are, maybe, another 100 people, within 50 miles of Boquillas del Carmen.
There are, maybe, 50 people in Boquillas Village on the U.S. side. And, maybe, another 100 people within fifty miles of Boquillas Village (not conting tourists to Big Bend).
The only way across the border at this point is to walk down a trail from Boquillas Village to the river. At which point, there is usually a boatman available to ferry you across the river. Then, if you are so inclined, you can ride a burro (or walk) to Boquillas del Carmen and enjoy a cold beer at the cantina.
From the interior of Mexico, Boquillas del Carmen is virtually inaccessible. Their only contact with civilization is across the river -- where there is a fairly well-supplied convenience store at Boquillas Village.
We canoed the Rio Grande, four days and about 40 miles from the opening of Mariscal Canyon down to Boquillas Village, and saw not another soul for the entire trip. The Big Bend country is unbelievably empty.
There was no POE at Boquillas when we made the trip. If there is one needed at that point, I've no objection to it being the cheapest possible arrangement -- as there will be nothing but local traffic.
You simply can't get there from the rest of Mexico...
And Obama rides a unicorn through the woods and parts the tides of the seas as they roar in he will be there.

Those protests against the government’s ‘Immigration Reform’ took place all around the country that day. You know as well as anyone that that crowd was a mixture of hispanic citizens and other races, including many Whites. “Huge” numbers of illegals would have been scared to congregate like that. That crowd was estimated to be anywhere from 350,000 to 500,000.
The protesters in Dallas carried fewer Mexican flags and many American flags. The protest in California is the one that made headlines when they tore down the American flag and raised a Mexican one.

Why in hell would you have to hike, when a mule can pick you up 50’ from the river and drive you anywhere you want to go?
Boquillas has been a major crossing point for years. Smugglers and mules are nothing new.
You don’t have a clue what you are talking about jackass.
I have read all of the replies. Some say that it would not increase illegal boarder crossings.
I for one, can’t see it at all.
We have terrorists crossing the boarder now and that has been confirmed. It is a large boarder to be sure. But they are also smuggling weapons across as well as people. I think that every effort to secure as much of the boarder should be made as can be done to secure our country.
Anything less at this point of time is just leaving the entire United States up to terrorism. Forget the rest of it all, the politics of Obama needing undocumented democrats etc. This is treason outright abandonment of our boarders during a time when we are susceptible to attack that these people are known to do is not just foolish, it is inviting them to do it.
