Well, that method appears to pare it down to two.

Now don’t you be checking the housekeeper for “connectivity”. That’ll get you more than an “Unauthorized User” warning!

The 503 error occurs because the amount of traffic is more than the server can handle.
And hitting "retry" multiple times adds to the load, so once it starts it gets much, much worse as people hit "retry."

There is something strangely coincidental with this happening on Sundays.Perhaps it's a subtle hint that we should be in church instead of humpin' the Internet?

This was not the case years ago on Free Republic. The population may have grown with over crowded Free Republic, but I am worried about a possible cyber attack. Months ago, Apache Killer tool was distributed to apply heavy traffic on sites, which forced a patch to be provided soon afterward. Alexa is not enough to analyze traffic of Free Republic, and hope there is some other sites that will allow to analyze traffic data to detect possible cyber attack. Free Republic is sure an enemy of the leftists, including China, which they are willing to destroy this site.

Yeah. There was a short delay instead of the usual longer one when it gets through. Better than five or six, anyway.

Perhaps the FR server could triage its bandwidth by:
(1) contributors,
(2) other registered Freepers,
(3) lurkers,
(4) retreads,
(5) blog pimps,
(5) trolls; and
(6) disruptors.

What is strange but it works. I go to the latest post, find a post that I want to read. Up comes the page Service Temporarily Unavailable try later. Go back to the original page. Look down to the Post Reply| Private Reply| To # | View Replies. I click on the | To # | and the page opens to the post and at the # post. Move to the start of the post and read it. So far this has worked every time 503 happens. Next time going to use the View Replies to see if that works.

Sunday maintainance.
I think JohnRob wants to fine tune and update the servers on the slowest day of the week so there no crashes when its busy.
A minor inconvenience Freepers can accept!
