Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said Thursday evening that Bush administration officials were gleeful after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks because it gave them a pretext to invade Iraq.
"Just think of what happened after 9/11. Immediately before there was any assessment there was glee in the administration because now we can invade Iraq," the Texas Republican told a group of mostly young backers in Iowa. He went on to suggest officials are now setting the stage for an invasion of Iran.
Paul, who was tied for second in this week's CBS News/New York Times poll of likely Iowa caucus-goers, is making a strong push in the Hawkeye state in hopes of scoring an upset victory in the first-in-the-nation January 3 caucuses. Paul volunteers have been working to convince Paul's mostly young supporters - many of whom will be on holiday break from college when the caucuses take place - to be sure to make it to their caucus site.
Paul's libertarian views - on the foreign policy front, he wants to dramatically reduce the U.S. military presence abroad and end all foreign aid - put him at odds with many Republican voters. A poll from Gallup this week found that 62 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning independent voters see Paul as an unacceptable nominee.

He understands the economy and the role of the Fed better than most on Capitol Hill.
He may understand it, so do I, but what, in all the time he has been in Washington has he done about it?
To: Responsibility2nd
Paul is obviously trying to evolve from simply being a nutcase to being a nutcase and a piece of human debris like the OWS scum he sympathizes with.

I am no defender or admirer of Bush 43, but this assertion is a malicious lie.

He was aware of it.
On television and in his newsletter at that time he put forth his belief that our troops’ use of armored bulldozers and tanks fitted with plows to clear trench lines (instead of perhaps jumping in with bayonet and trench knife) amounted to war crimes.

In response to Paul's comments Thursday evening, former Bush administration spokesman Ari Fleisher Tweeted: "The man is nuts." Couldn't have said it better myself, Ari.
How Ron Paul will get even a single vote in the Republican primaries is a puzzlement.
He's an embarrassment not only to conservatism (which, of course he is not), but to America.
I just want him to go away.

Hmmm...wonder where the sanctimonious Ron Paul defenders are? I'd like to hear their defense of this remark.* crickets * [pinging is tempting]

Disgusting fraud. His candidacy stopped being funny a while back.
Yes, but the paulbots infatuation with him and the idiotic things they post is always good for a laugh.

And despite what he says; I dont trust him to keep his promise not to go third party when he loses the GOP nominatiion.
We can hope he does. The paulbots will then vote for him instead of the person who hates America almost as much as Appeasement Paul, Obama.
To: Responsibility2nd; All
Rush not only excoriated RP for being glee, he also warned the entire conservative movement, that this was the man that would not hesitate to run third party and possibly split enough votes for Bambi to glide through.
The guy is so damn weird.......

ut what, in all the time he has been in Washington has he done about it? He is in the best position now to prove he is more than just talk on economic issues. He is the chairman of the monetary policy committee. He could subpoena Fed records, actually conduct an independent investigation and audit, call for a special prosecutor, etc, and he has done jack and squat. He actually skipped one committee meeting on the fed to attend some legalize pot rally. He is just another old career politician who has a pet issue he likes to talk about but dares not actually fix the issue lest he doesn't have it to talk about or raise money on any more.
