I can't agree on this one, and I've been hearing it too often in conservative circles. Let's focus our fire on President Obama’s policies and actions, not guesses about his sexual orientation unless we can get better evidence than his lack of prior girlfriends.

Contrary to what our television tubes try to tell us, it simply is not true that every teenager and twenty-something man tries constantly to get girls to go on dates or get them into bed.

A hundred years ago, the common practice in our current culture of dating dozens of women before marrying one of them would have been shocking. Although it's certainly true that some wealthy and powerful men have always “played the field,” in more conservative circles a few generations ago, dating lots of different women would have marked a man as someone who couldn't be trusted to remain faithful to his wife.

This isn't just stuff out of Victorian-era history books.

I can think of more than a few clearly and unquestionably heterosexual conservative men who were more interested in their college studies or their careers than in girlfriends for a long time before they got married. While Obama certainly is not a Christian in any sense evangelicals would recognize as biblically legitimate, I can also think of quite a few young Christian men I know who are following their parents’ strong warnings against getting involved in the culture of casual dating.

There are both secular and religious reasons why someone might not have spent a lot of time dating before getting married.

We've got more than enough ammunition to go after President Obama’s destructive policies without getting drawn into a debate over whether he is homosexual or whether he, as a young man, was more interested in college and law school and career than in women.

My guess is Obama in high school and college was a bit of a geek who knew he wasn't going to get lots of girls and therefore focused on his studies. That's not a bad thing. I just wish he'd spent his time reading better books and finding better friends.
