SYDNEY (AP) — An Australian man has been sentenced to 500 lashes and a year in a Saudi Arabian jail after being convicted of blasphemy, officials said Wednesday.
The 45-year-old man, identified by family members as Mansor Almaribe of southern Victoria state, was detained in the holy city of Medina last month while making the Muslim pilgrimage of hajj. Family members told Australian media that Saudi officials accused him of insulting the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, a violation of Saudi Arabia's strict blasphemy laws.

No... he would be slapped and let go. After all, he did not use a gun, bat, knife, or other aggressive device. Only if he was protecting himself would he be in trouble.

The Australian reaction will be interesting. Probably they will wrangle a pardon for him after a lot of grovelling.

He won’t die,they will schedule the lashings to a set interval once every 2 weeks or some such.Probably if Australia pursued them the same way,they did over that Persian actress stuck in Iran,they’d probably settle for quite a lot less.
Since this is however a Western ally,they are unlikely to intervene and honestly if you want to change this and he is an Australian citizen......e-mail the Australian government.
Otherwise there are ways to resolve this.
And another thing, why does the AP call Medina “the holy city of”?
I need to walk away from this thread..seems this is a Muslim thing. I first assumed they guy being lashed was a Christian.

Wonder what this Australian Bloke, thinks of his religion of peace now. My guess, is that if it were someone else getting the same sentence for the same crime, he would have been all for it.

No one will survive 500 lashes unless they use a wet noodle...death for me would be prefered...

Yes. Essentially he will be beaten to death. He will die of the trauma and blood loss or a combination of it. Even if he survived, I am sure he would be confined to a wheel chair for the rest of his life. How anyone could stand 10 of those, let alone 500, is beyond me. Animals.
