Dozens of Iranian students have stormed the UK embassy in Tehran, chanting “death to England.” Before police intervened, protesters pelted the embassy with stones and petrol bombs, brought down the flag, and destroyed a pile of classified documents.

Reports by the Mehr news agency that six UK staff had been taken hostage when students raided a north Tehran diplomatic compound were withdrawn shortly after they were posted. No explanation was given for the report, nor its removal.

From the Reuters story on Drudge......

"It was not an organized measure. The establishment had no role in it. It was not planned," said the [Iranian] official, who declined to be identified.

Sure it wasn't. They had time to get organized, make banners, etc. Not much goes on in that nation or city without the knowledge or permission of the regime.

Agreed.

Mind you so have you, Clinton, Obama and even Bush Jr. Compared with Reagan.

Last Pres with big cojones was probably Bush Sr.

Carter already showed them that there won’t be repercussions.

This is an act of War. England should declare war and put a submarine blockade on Iran and set out strikes on Iranian oil ports from Diego Garcia. (all they need is a couple of submarines to do this). Anglo-Israeli attacks could end the nuke program in a fortnight.

Hmm, ‘death to England’. Did they get bored with ‘death to America’? Gosh, and haven’t we been told all this violence and hatred is happening because of American arrogance? Let’s see how everyone else handles it when it’s their country in the chant. Not that I’m glad about this. I hope the Brits kick their arses, but it’s in Iran itself. Welcome to our world England.

The government of Iran wants to distract the masses.

You do realise that all that will happen will be a statement of condemnation from the PM and maybe a complaint will be lodged “at the highest levels”.

I don't think anyone is saying the troops are wimpy (although the display by the sailors upon capture was pretty bad), but the leadership leaves much to be desired.

Yes, you fought with us in Iraq, but Brown pulled out the last Brit troops just as the surge was underway, which wasn't terribly helpful.

The MoD’s ROE in Afghanistan is even worse than ours (although much better than the laughable Germans).

And the role in Libya is somewhat tempered with the discovery of the fact that the Brits only had 64 Tomahawks.

Look, The Brits and America do have a special relationship (despite B.O.’s best efforts), and I think most here would love to see Britain return to a formidable partner, but since The Iron Lady left office, leadership for that is sorely lacking.

Have my doubts about that. Remember Maggie Thatcher after Saddam invaded Kuwait? "Don't go wobbley on us, George!" Well he did go to war, just terminated it way too early (100 hour ground war).

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t an “embassy” considered the occupied territory of the country it represents? Dozens, or perhaps 300 as some reports indicate seems to be an invasion onto British soil and I don’t see one firearm used by the Brits.

The way I see it, anyone who is seen breaking and entering the embassy should be mowed down with automatic weapons while an ambassador or representative is on the phone with Tehran explaining that the Iranian government needs to control its people or be prepared for many bodies.

Sad to say—You are right—just a sternly worded condemnation is about all we will get—But I have no doubt some event will just happen—something we may not hear much about but will hurt Iran. The Brits are a clever and dastardly people—they make good friends and bad enemies.

Most likely rent-a-mob. Regimes often use the overrun-the-foreign-embassy-with-a-rent-a-mob tactic.
