Whenever I write in these pages about the corrosive effect of Big Government upon the citizenry in Britain, Canada, Europe, and elsewhere and note that this republic is fairly well advanced upon the same grim trajectory, I get a fair few letters on the lines of: "You still don't get it, Steyn. Americans aren't Europeans. Or Canadians. We're not gonna take it."
I would like to believe it. It's certainly the case that Americans have more attitude than anybody else or, at any rate, attitudinal slogans. I saw a fellow in a "Don't Tread on Me" T-shirt the other day. He was at LaGuardia, and he was being trod all over, by the obergropinfuhrers of the TSA, who had decided to subject him to one of their enhanced pat-downs. There are few sights more dismal than that of a law-abiding citizen having his genitalia pawed by state commissars, but having them pawed while wearing a "Don't Tread on Me" T-shirt is certainly one of them.

I know that "Red Dawn" was sort of hokey, but muliply that by about 10,000 and one gets the idea of the magnitude of possible resistance.
(It wouldn't be just a few teens with hunting rifles...)
Actually there are arguments for & against doing just that & my thoughts are why just use one .
Mark Steyn ping.
Freepmail me, if you want on or off the Mark Steyn ping list.
Thanks for the ping knews_hound.
Most people with class don’t wear T-Shirts? I don’t know what airline you’re flying, but the ones I am on have lots of T-shirts and I wouldn’t say they were “classless” people. Out of curiousity, how old are you?
Now just a dang minute, Steyn! Out here in Idaho we proudly display the motto "Famous Potatoes"! When the blue-helmeted hordes descend for that liberty's last stand, do you think they're gonna want to mess with anybody sporting "Famous Potatoes" on his body armor? I think not!
Apology accepted.
Because those people would be the perfect weapon. Someone who won’t be searched. Just make them carry this carry-on and threaten their family with torture at the last instance.
This is a war. We should’ve attacked all muslim countries after 9-11. There was no other choice. We took the stupid route.
I love wearing t-shirts around, but if that's all you have on while flying you might as well just show up in your jammies and be really comfortable -
which is OK, it's a (relatively) free country, but it does look dumpy.
I'm 53, and the vast majority of my flying is for business puposes - maybe that colors my view point a bit.
As we discovered from Bloomberg, the Fed loaned over $7T to the banks at the height of the banking crisis - and the banking status quo was protected with even higher bonuses and salaries than before. Where was the monkey wrench that stopped that travesty of crony capitalism? WHERE?
Steyn, as usual, notices pertinent things nobody else seems to notice.
Most of them, unfortunately, point to America’s rapid demise as a free country.
I sensed Steyn’s pain yesterday as he filled in for Rush.
It has to be tough to adopt a country and watch it fall down the same hole as the ones you left.
I never dreamed we would allow the tyranny we have let happen so far. It is depressing really.
It has to be the old “frog in the pot”, that is until Obama, the water has boiled at top heat. Maybe the frog is ready to be served.
I hope not.
good thread to read. AND putting in a new tagline. ping
Thanks
Thanks for the ping.
Do you post your howling rants while guzzling barrels of MD 20-20?
Bernanke hands out $7 Trillion, Trillion with a T, and you think I am the one guzzling MD 20-20 by the barrel?
A pot of tar, a wagonload of feathers and 535 rails would probably be sufficient...
Hee!
