Supposedly some conservative towns added to his district—he had a challenge from Sean Bielat-R last time (though still won by a good margin). From what I read on Red Mass Group Bielat may no longer be in the district though (living in a town taken out?)

Red Mass Group:
>>Barney Frank has apparently taken a look at the district and decided it’s not favorable. According to NECN, not running for re-election. Congressman Barney Frank of Massachusetts fourth Congressional District has said he will not seek re-election for 2012. Frank, a ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, planned to hold a press conference in Newton, Mass....

Has an “active” congressman ever been pardoned? That is what I think this is about. Bawney get’s out of the way, investigations get explosive by the end of 2012 and Zero pardon’s a party hack on his way out in 2013.

Dan Rostenkowski's political career ended in 1994 after a two year investigation by the Justice Department. In a case led by future U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Rostenkowski was indicted on corruption charges for his role in the House post office scandal. He was forced to step down from all Congressional leadership positions. In elections later that year, Rostenkowski lost his seat and retired from political life. Charges against Rostenkowski included keeping "ghost" employees on his payroll, using Congressional funds to buy gifts such as chairs and ashtrays for friends, and trading in officially purchased stamps for cash at the House post office. While the stamps-for-cash allegation received the most media coverage, those charges were dismissed on the recommendation of the prosecutor. In 1996, he pleaded guilty to reduced charges of mail fraud. He was fined and was sentenced to 17 months in prison, of which he served 15 at the federal prison in Oxford, Wisconsin, and the remaining 2 months at a half way house in Chicago. Rostenkowski was pardoned in December 2000 by President Clinton, who said "Rostenkowski had done a lot for his country and had more than paid for his mistakes."

Like others have said, his district was recently redrawn and now includes some more conservative towns. Not saying a Republican will win this seat, but it may be a less daunting task than before.

“Excellent news, but why is he leaving? Are the investigators closing in?”

####

Ha Ha. Don’t make me laugh.

Who do you think he is, Criminal of the Century-Richard Nixon? Guilty of the unspeakably heinous crime of attempting to cover up a third rate burglary engineered by his subordinates?

As a queer Democrat, a protected class, he is immune from prosecution, regardless of the magnitude of his gross crminality. Especially from the current crop of ball-less Republicans.

Chris Dodd has already quit Congress-—and is now ensconced in a cushy high-pay job, working for Hollywood moguls.

Dodd is living the good life...... and collecting several state and federal pensions, as well.

Today we must rejoice!!!! Barney is leaving...but the question is why now?...They have taken his stronghold, the armpit of America, New Bedford from his district. Without nearly 95% of the vote, he may lose. His new district will be a much more “conservative-leaning” district.
I can still say I’ve never voted for that trash. Several times he had no opposition so I had to vote for myself.
I’m just happy to see him go. Maybe he could take Kerry and Deval with him!!

People like Frank don’t quit gigs like this....powerful, well known, a real player in the way our world is shaped....

That fact that he is leaving means either two things or a combination of both...

Health issues or the internal polling for dems in general must be terrible and knows they will lose the Senate and more

People like Frank don’t give up power unless he knows the end is near and he will be a nobody

I have long said here on FR that Dodd and Frank needed to be swinging from a bridge in DC.

I’d say ‘don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out’ but he probably will.
