Newt Gingrich Stands by 'Soft' Immigration Stance, Despite Party Backlash

WASHINGTON — Newt Gingrich isn’t backing off his “humane” immigration stance despite complaints from Republican hardliners and fellow Presidential hopefuls — he’s embellishing it.

The former House speaker issued “10 Steps to a Legal Nation” this week, expanding on his remarks during Tuesday’s GOP debate

(snip)

Those guilty only of sneaking into the U.S. would have a path “to legality, but not citizenship” similar to the existing naturalization process, plus a penalty fee of at least $5,000.

Have read Newt’s policy on illegals on his site. He never said a word about amnesty and his proposal is not amnesty.

BS. Newt's plan would de-criminalize 30 million illegal aliens, while not granting them actual citizenship.

The problem with that, is it's the "camel nose under the tent". The leftists within our government would soon find a way to give them full citizenship, while forgoing all of the other demands of the deal, such as, returning to their country of origin to re-enter properly, paying the $5K fine, registering with the federal database, etc., etc.

Just like they stabbed Reagan in the back, the Dems in Congress would never do a damn thing to shut the border down, or deny government benefits and welfare to newly arrived illegals.

Talk about a pathway to citizenship. This is it.

have never heard or read Cain’s ideas on deportation.

Oh? Then you weren't listening to him in the last debate. Cain correctly pointed out that illegals will self-deport if we just enforce the laws already on the books. That's the sensible, conservative approach. Not dreaming up new ways to avoid offending illegals and liberals.

“If Newt falls, Romney wins.”

The last debate that I saw had something like 8 candidates. When did the other 6 drop out?

But, if they get that far, then they can out with some kind of visa program and all the stupid little conservatives will say, "oh it's our candidate now; we better ignore it now or we'll lose."

It might not be popular to say, but I see a lot of benefits to establishing a visa program after the border is secured. The first benefit I see is the screening process for applicants. If someone has a criminal record deny the visa and since the border has been secured (done before anything else gets implemented) when these non-visa holding people are caught they are deported. The second benefit I see is taxes. These visa holders who have already been using the services paid for by our tax dollars now start paying for some of those services as well.

FWIW, I don't ever see the political agreement to secure the border without some type of recognition of those that are already here. At least with a visa program they are not made citizens and we find out who they are.

In reading your posts on this thread, you seem to be exhibiting a very high tolerance for RINO-like behavior on the part of our candidates. That says to me, that your standards are out of step with those of most mainstream conservatives, who are frankly fed up, and at the boiling point about state of our field.

On the contrary. There's nothing I'd like better than a solid conservative Washington. In fact, it would be my version of a political utopia.

My point is this - the Washington insiders have chosen Romney. THEY believe he's middle of the road enough to get the "independent" vote (ugh!). Because of that, they're doing what they can to get him on top by election day. The uninformed will take him. WE'LL get stuck with him.

We can't win an election by ourselves. We're going to have to support SOMEONE, or Romney will simply move in the fill the empty space we've left for him. We can't bring a persons poll numbers up by ourselves, either. Someone else has to be on top on election day, so Romney doesn't hold that place. Who can do it? Who's left standing right now?

Anyone but Romney. We have to push someone. We're running out of time.

“Let’s put it this way....Romney or Newt?”

Actually, the way things seem to be going, the choice is going to be Romney or Obama, and THAT will give us Obama.

"Yes, finally a Republican candidate who is fair to immigrants 58%"

Do you honestly believe the 58% answering that question that way are going to vote Republican? No. You can add them to the 19% who said they'd never vote Republican and the 23% who said Gingrich was betraying the base. Gingrich is toast.

At least Gingrich has a plan.

It may never be passed by congress, but at least he has gone out on a limb and made a proposal for dealing with the problem. That's more than I can say about Cain, Bachmann or Santorum.

What utter horse hockey.

The conservative approach to illegal immigration is to simply ENFORCE the laws already on the books. Cut off all government welfare benefits, and deny them jobs through the use of E-Verify, and there'd be a mass exodus to the southern border.

In case you missed it, that was exactly what Herman Cain proposed in the last debate.

Newt's plan doesn't pass the smell test, and is just another hare-brained scheme to skirt our laws, and appease liberals and the illegal lobby.

I don't see how any conservative could agree with Newt's proposal.

"Isn’t it true that most illegals do not want citizenship?"

Speaking in generalities. It is true. There is an underlying notion that most of the southwest really belongs to Mexico. One needs look no further than the photos of the early 'immigrant rights' marches before the organizers realized their error and flooded the participants with American flags.

Does anyone really think we'd need to discuss English as a national language, if a majority of Mexican "immigrants" wanted to be US citizens?

A lot of people have compared this to Perry’s major screw up but they are substantially different. Perry said we had to give tax subsidies to the illegals to educate them.

Gingrich is saying, let’s fix the border then determine how to humanely treat those that have been here for 25 years and have families. Not saying I agree with him, but it’s not a deal breaker for me.

The deal breakers were his cozying up to Pelosi and Clinton when he wasn’t running.

“Demographics are destiny. It makes sense to find a solution before another 50 yrs goes by and the decision is made for our grandchildren. “

How right you are. We’re pretty much at a crossroads now. We can quickly become a Hispanic-majority nation, or not.

If we want to become Hispanic-majority, then the BEST THING we can do is keep the Illegals that are here, and watch them have kids and more kids, and grand kids and more grand kids. If not, then they need to GO HOME, and be prevented from coming back here.

It’s a decision that well-informed people need to make. There are good things about Hispanic cultures - the food, generally cheap labor, generally nice people, very little terrorism (compared to other cultures). And if we choose that direction, so be it. But there are bad things about those cultures, which I don’t need to dwell on.

That’s what we’re dealing with here - because, I agree, we are out of time.

I do NOT trust the govt. If Newt’s plan is followed we will have an additional 20 million democRat citizens in a couple of years with millions more pouring in because the govt always forgets the secure the border part of the deal. Only a total fool would trust Newt or the govt.

My G_D, read my tagline. Other than Romney we have got to rid of this communist in the White House. Whoever it is we need to stand behind him/her. Our literal future is at stake.

In any case, the disposition of folks already here doesn’t bother me anything like the 60 million babies we’ve murdered since Roe v Wade...

Amen!

Also, FWIW, people tend not to put together the relationship between abortion and illegal immigration. The problem of illegal immigration really took off as our birth rates declined. One of the contributors to that decline is abortion.

It’s not rocket science. Secure the borders. Crack down on illegals and their employers. No bennies to illegals. No jobs, no welfare, no food stamps, no SSI, no education, no hospital stays, no welfare, no bank accounts, no contracts, no drivers licenses, no social security, no medicare. Prison terms for criminals. They’ll leave as fast as they can.

Simply announce it as the ENFORCED law of the land and they will stop coming. Those already here will begin leaving.

“And everyone is agreed that we should close the borders, so that’s not the concern folks have about “illegals”. “

Oh how I wish it to be true, but IT IS FALSE.

If it were true, then the double-fence that was authorized in 2007 would have BEEN BUILT...but it is not finished - because the REPUBLICANS watered it down to the point where it simply doesn’t even exist now.

There are A LOT of business interests that JUST LOVE a large supply of Illegals and want to keep things that way. We are nowhere near agreeing to a secure border, even in the Republican Party.

OK, Jim. Who's going to take out Romney? Who can bring their poll numbers up far enough to take the guy out, and still wipe the floor with Oboma?

Newt is wrong on this amnesty stuff, but he can't do it alone. If we can take the presidency, odds are we'll take the house and senate as well - straight ticket.
We can handle the house a lot easier, so Newt wouldn't be able to pull it off anyway.

Almost every president as long as I can remember promised to close the border and do something about illegals. It's still open, and they're still here. (Even Romney says he's against amnesty and for border closing. I mean, c'mon! Politicians LIE. "It's the votes, stupid.")

I can’t argue with you, you own the zot button. :>)

So assuming you’re right and then considering that Newt is out, whom is it that YOU think is going to win the general, Romney or Obama?

Not that it really matters, because this country will be “toast” in either case.
