We do not choose to add more to the blame game for failure of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction , but one Democratic talking point needs debunking: that the talks failed because of Republicansâ attachment to the Bush tax cuts.
The untold story of the negotiations is the significance of the Republican offer of fundamental tax reform. It is critical to understand the interplay between the proposal (dubbed the "Toomey plan") and existing tax law.
At no time in the negotiations did the Democratic committee members drop their insistence that, one way or the other, any deal had to include a trillion dollars in new taxes. Republicans believe that would kill job creation and economic recovery. In the long run, a strong economy producing more wealth (and, therefore, more tax revenue) is how we will both reduce the deficit and regain the prosperity that all Americans deserve.
The writers are the Republican members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. Jon Kyl is a senator from Arizona. Rob Portman is a senator from Ohio. Pat Toomey is a senator from Pennsylvania. Jeb Hensarling is a representative from Texas. Fred Upton and Dave Camp are representatives from Michigan.

And the Dems will blame the Republicans, they are already doing that.
The Dem’s wanted it to fail the day they agreed to this stupid committee. I can’t believe the GOP even agreed to it to start with.
I heard that bets were placed and the odds were 10 to 1 that they had no intentions of every coming up with plan. This is what gov’t always does...pass the buck.
The “super committee” failed because the goal was to raise the statutory debt limit without having to cut spending. Mission Accomplished. So don’t be fooled by the rhetoric from either side. Your masters in Washington are quite satisfied with the outcome. The looting continues and the public still does not understand why.
“I can’t believe the GOP even agreed to it to start with.”
I also had a real problem with the GOP agreeing to this.
Article in Aviation Week:
Congress Fails, Defense Pays
Last week’s failure by the so-called Super Committee to find at least $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction means that the Pentagon’s budget will automatically begin to be slashed by $600 billion over 10 years starting in January 2013. But the committee’s failure will begin reverberating across the industry almost immediately - possibly taking out the nation’s biggest weapon system - the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
While lawmakers such as Senate Armed Services ranking member John McCain (R-Ariz.) and House Armed Services Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) have vowed to intervene to stop the automatic cuts, the Obama administration has threatened to veto a reversal. If the Budget Control Act (BCA) remains in effect, the Pentagon - which plans its future budgets years in advance - will be faced with the prospect of submitting a fiscal 2013 budget by February that assumes the maximum level of cuts. And that means contractors could face terminations of signature weapon programs that may, or may not, come to pass.”
donks are always blameing someone else. Nothing is ever their fault.
But most people know that
“I cant believe the GOP even agreed to it to start with.”
Boehner made a boner.
No surprise there I knew the leftist on the committee was going to do that. Patty Murray acted surprised they couldn’t come to an agreement! Patty You are stupid!!!!!
The federal government is the problem. Congress is entrenched and serve only their own interests. The marxist in the white house is overjoyed at the upcoming defense cuts.
The Super-Doofer Committee was destined to fail the moment Lurch was named as a member. He has a worse record for accomplishment than Obama (less than zero). The “kept man” hardly ever shows up for work and virtually never introduces a bill that he authored. The only documents he’s ever written were the after action reports that got him his medals; wasn’t he in Vietnam?
“The Dems wanted it to fail.”
Yes this has been ‘rope a dope’ from the start.
Anybody who concurs with Democrats either refuse to investigate their positions or simply are extortioners, liars and/or thieves. They have no socially redeeming value.
I cant believe the GOP even agreed to it to start with.
Boehner made a boner.
There are few things in life that are certain.
Death.... Taxes.... the GOP getting played by the rats like Charlie Brown kicking Lucy’s football.
I thought it failed because the Republicans wouldn’t allow their rich cronies to suffer tax increases. /s
We're offering you a 50/50 deal.
We'll cut the budget a trillion, you give a trillion in taxes.
NO?
