Hosted by the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute, the theme of tonight's Republican presidential debate is foreign policy and national security.
The debate is being held at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.
CNN is carrying the debate live at 8 p.m. EST.
Participating candidates are: businessman Herman Cain, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Speaker Newt Gingrich, Reps. Ron Paul (TX) and Michele Bachmann (MN), former Gov. Jon Huntsman, and former Sen. Rick Santorum.
Ok, so Jose decides to come here as a young man. Jose marries, works hard in a job, stays off welfare raises a nice family with kids who don’t get into trouble. Jose stays married. Jose learns all he can about America, studies up, passes the citizenship test with flying colors, and learns to speak and write English fluently — then GREAT. Jose can stay. But realistically — how many Jose’s are there really in this country?
However, Juan comes in spreading TB and/or chagas, refuses to learn English, takes welfare for himself and his three pregnant girlfriends while making money hand over fist under the table, commits petty crimes, drools and leers at women in the 7-11, drives drunk on the weekends without insurance after walking out of said 7-11 with a 12 pack of coronas, ends up in the ER due to some accident he caused or from falling off a ladder on his under the table construction job ... well, guys like Juan — and his girlfriends need to GO.
And how many Juans are there now in the U.S.?
I say just dry up the freaking benefits and the Juans would leave and the Jose’s would stay. Problem solved.
Hey, I didn’t write these laws.
Neither did Perry.
We are Dealing with it as best we can.
Do you hear Perry saying he would cut off foreign aid?
It all ties together.
We want immigration that benefits America, not immigration that taxes America.
True. But there are some who defend the status quo or worse, defend amnesty simply because their favorite candidate supports it.
Alabama has done well in creating a law that results in the self-deportation of ILLEGAL aliens. Other states should follow suit.
That is 100% correct. Military or Engineering. Outside of that, no dice. The libs can take their fake liberal arts degrees and shove it.
At least 2 million must be deported outright. Keep in mind, there are far more (perhaps double) than the "11 million" Wolf Blitzer suggested. I agree it is impossible to deport all 15-20 million illegals. But enforcement of existing laws cause massive numbers to self-deport. Arizona and Alabama's laws have been extremely effective. Alabama's unemployment has dropped sharply since they passed their law and illegals fled.
But as far as the "rooted neighbors", that is terribly naive, just as was Newt's "25 year" straw man. Illegals are here for all different time frames, and by all different methods. But the law breaking doesn't end there. To get a job, they need an SSN. Most of them steal one from existing Americans. This happens MILLIONS of times a year, leaving devastating effects on the credit ratings of citizens. If an illegal is here 20 years, they usually break the laws for 20 years: ID theft, SSN fraud, tax evasion, welfare, WIC, Medicaid and food stamp fraud, etc. Newt showed a total disregard for this reality, and has never supported state laws to enforce existing laws, as has Cain.
That is where we disagree. As for the election, Bristol Palin could beat Obama.
Just goes to show if a state enforces hiring laws (proof of citizenship)
these illegals will leave the state.
If all the states enacted laws like Alabama, the illegals would head back to Met-I-Co.
And Millions of jobs would be filled by jobless Americans who are desperate for work.
You try to falsely accuse my life and expcet fellow freepers to take you seriously in the future? You’re a piece of work you are! I can tell you without hesitation that my life is not ‘folks who want no enforcement of immigration law.’ Maybe you would do well to put down the hyperbole pipe.
MY SIL is an experienced teacher.
My Brother is a US citizen with masters degrees, and a healthy bank account.
They cant get here.
The girls are good smart girls, real workers.
Perry says they go first.
Read with focus. Only people who should be deported are those who broke the law by entering illegally. If kids & grand kids were born here, they did not break any laws by being born.
Therefore the illegal grandfather gets deported.
Sorry, I like Cain - but I just don’t see how any objective observer could watch him in these debates and think he’s sufficiently up to speed.
Being a CEO is a great thing and his record in that capacity was a good one. He’s smart. One thing that isn’t pointed out often is that he was a mathemetician by trade. He’s clearly a logical thinker. And I don’t buy into the bimbo eruptions for a minute.
But he just clearly hasn’t given a lot of time and attention to learning about government and international affairs. I don’t blame him. He’s been busy. But even 3rd tier guys like Santorum display a depth of knowledge on the issues he clearly doesn’t have. I wouldn’t hire a congressman to run General Mills, and I strongly doubt the CEO of General Mills would be much of a president.

What I heard from Newt was a reasonable approach to the immigration problem.
Look, if I leave the front door open through the winter how can I complain about the cold and my skyrocketing heating bills?
Newt's talking about a 3 part plan. First, control the border- shut the door. Second, Guest Worker program. Third, a Review Board to review the illegals that are here.
The question is what's the criteria for deportation and how do you handle those that can stay? Newt said those allowed to stay would not be US citizens. Forcefully sending all 20 million men, women, and children back over the border won't happen. If you think that, then tell me who is going to do it exactly how.....really....
You do remember the beer ID law from 5 or 6 years ago right........That did wonders for the illegals in Tenn.
I thought I heard Perry imply he was for something like a Marshall Plan for Mexico. That suggestion slipped under the discussion wire here.
We need a president who does not have a record of being pro-ILLEGAL alien. We need a president who stops suing states for doing the jobs the feds will not do. We need a president who will resolve the out of control ILLEGAL immigration issue.
There is no law against being born to illegal parents.
Anyone born here is here legally, based on current law.
Only the grandpa gets booted out of the country for breaking the law.
No flame here, Vike. I agree with every word you wrote.
I can’t imagine Newt’s pro-ILLEGAL alien position not costing him big with conservatives but we’ll see.
