A Pause in the Tebow Argument
To enjoy the conclusion of Thursday nights Broncos-Jets game, you did not have to buy into the legend of Tim Tebow or care one whit about his religion or politics or the ridiculousness of the Tebowing craze. You didnt even have to hate the Jets or detest the word Sanchize, although that would be a plus. Even without all of that, it was possible to sit back and marvel at how preposterous Tebows winning touchdown drive was, after 54 minutes of acting as if he had stumbled into a football game for the first time and decided to play quarterback.
Of course, to enjoy the conclusion of Thursday nights Broncos-Jets game, you had to watch the first 54 minutes of two teams acting as if they had stumbled into a football game for the first time. But the ending was sublime, unless youre a Jets fan, in which case we fear for the safety of your television screen.

Maybe Elway just had gas.. my eyes ain’t what they used to be. If my Vikes can beat the Raiders, the Broncs are back in the hunt.. sometimes prayer works beyond one’s expectations. oh well. :-)
It isn’t just his accuracy when throwing the football that is a weakness. It’s his ability to read a defense after the snap or to shift off of the primary receiver.
He had some better options other than the primary receiver on at least three pass plays. I remember at least two occasions where his tight end was wide open in the middle of the field for a easy six yard gain and Tebow didn’t seem to notice.
Right now, he is a John Fourcade type QB. Fall back, look to see if the primary receiver is covered and then run was the style if I remember. Granted he has more athletic ability, but he won’t be anymore successful than John Fourcade was long term.

He is probably praying “Don’t let me screw up”. That’s what most pro athletes are thinking before a game. Alex Karras the former Detroit Lion lineman used to throw up before every game.
Tebow completed 66.4% of his passes in four years at Florida. There was no talk of what a bad passer he was in college. He probably had better receives in college than he has at Denver. Three are now in the NFL: Harvin at Minnesota, Hernandez at New England, and his roommate who’s now with the Eagles. Plus he had other good receivers.
Things are faster and different in many ways in the NFL. But during the long post-game show on the NFL Network they talked to John Elway and showed Elway’s stats for the same number of first starts as Tebow has now had. Tebow’s passing stats were better than Elway’s.
If they keep playing Tebow and improve the pass protection many might be surprised at what sort of QB he becomes, plus if he can continue to utilize his running and not have serious injuries, lots of folks might end up eating huge servings of crow.
Oh, the Gator boards were full of opposing fans posting messages like, "Tebow Can't Throw", when he was at UF.
Aikman was 1 for 11 his rookie year. yeah
I remember when Cowboy fans seriously thought Steve Walsh was better than Aikman.
Passing yards won't tell you anything about how good a QB anyone was in college, or what their pro potential was because the balance of run and pass has varied so greatly over the years at different schools.
I can think of three old Alabama QBs who wouldn't be anywhere near that list: Bart Starr, Joe Namath and Snake Stabler.
And yet the winningest Bama QB of all time, Jay Barker, did nothing in the NFL.
The joy of watching St. Timothy The Inaccurate is that he is a perfect messenger for God’s Word...not that Tebow is great. For 3-1/2 quarters, he’s terrible. But he wins in the end and gives thanks to God for the victory. That’s a lesson for all of us.
God continually delights in making man’s wisdom look foolish so that man will learn to live by faith in God and trust in God to deliver the victory, regardless how improbable it looks to the rest of us.
If Tebow were 27-for-30 passing with 400 yards, we would marvel at his skill. Instead, we marvel at his “luck”. Meanwhile, God laughs and says “what do you mean, luck?”. Tebow isn’t allowed to get a big ego because even he knows he’s a terrible quarterback. But Tebow has faith and that faith allows him to be used by God to win games in the end and confound his critics who must get even angrier with every Broncos win.
Barker was an oddity who turned out to be an outstanding college QB. But his first couple of years as the starter he could barely throw a pass. Still Alabama won a national championship in '92 with a great defense and a QB who basically handed the ball off to the running backs.
His passing improved greatly his junior and senior seasons until he ran up some good stats. I think he was a four year starter who had immense OJT because there was no hot shot QB on the roster, and he made few mistakes and Gene Stallings just trusted Barker.
I will always be grateful for them beating Miami in that Championship game, I was actually in Miami the night of that game, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Canes fans with the tears of unfathomable sadness....I remember that year that Gators gave Bama a pretty tough game, much tougher than I expected, I think it took a Pick-6 for Bama to beat us.
Yep, that was in the SEC championship game, one of the first which was played in Birmingham. Antonio Langham got that pick six.
In fairness to Tebow, the team needs more offensive playmakers.
Yes, but so would any QB with 8 games under the belt. I remember John Elway, for example, playing pretty poorly in his first season.
Sadly, I totally agree with your comment. We are becoming a society without a soul.
By the same token, I take this quote to heart:
"When you get to the end zone, act like you've been there before."
-- Darrell K. Royal
I think that's the best policy.
That's pretty interesting from at least a couple of angles.
