Newt 1993 :”
I am for people, individuals — exactly like automobile insurance — individuals having health insurance and being required to have health insurance. And I am prepared to vote for a voucher system which will give individuals, on a sliding scale, a government subsidy so we insure that everyone as individuals have health insurance.
Gingrich replied he would not make it an issue in the campaign and said he agreed with key aspects of Romneycare.....
“I agree that all of us have a responsibility to pay—help pay for health care,” Gingrich said, adding, “I've said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond ...”
I would like to see the clip to see if he provided a better rationale for it than the above, which is pretty lame. That was 1993 right in the middle of the Hillary-care battle.
Hillary-care proposed a mandate on all employers and some Republicans countered it with a personal manadate.
The biggest problem with these government mandates is everyone in congress and lobbying piles on the coverage requirements until the cost is so high it just makes things worse.
Notice how Newt is the center of attention now?

I am aware of no federal government mandate that requires everyone who resides in this country to purchase automobile insurance or pay a penalty tax to the I.R.S. Newt’s analogy is not a good one.

if everyone *must* have insurance, and theyre willing to buy it for those who cant/wont afford it, doesnt that kinda sorta, like in a roundabout way, raise the cost across the board...kinda like the auto insurance mandate did ???
how about reigning in the lawyers ??? most CON-gress things are lawyers ??? wait, what???

This is vintage Newt, and the reason why, even though he can uncork sound statements, he doesn’t truly get it and I can’t support him.
