Newt Gingrich was full of praise for the man besting him in the polls for the Republican presidential nomination, calling Mitt Romney "an enormous improvement" over President Obama.

Given an opportunity to take a free swing at Romney during Saturday's CBS/National Journal debate, Gingrich demurred.

As predicted, as soon as Newt starts moving up, the attacks begin. Newt didn’t praise Romney, he did the same thing he has done in every debate, refuse to get in the gutter of going after the other debaters and instead focus on going after Obama.

Horsehockey.

Newt refused to take the bait and give the media another talking point that might eventually be used against a fellow Republican.

He loves to tweak the media every chance he can get, and wasn't going to sideline the debate into another infantile food-fight similar to debates of the recent past.

They had agreed to no name calling and no infighting. They agreed to beat up on the usurper, his policies and if need be the press, but not each other. And, like gentlemen and lady, they abided by that agreement.

Yes, a Republican.

They come in different stripes; Conservative to RINOs.

Unfortunately for Mittens, he is a Republican in Name Only - but, nonetheless, a Republican.

It's one of the reasons why I am no longer a Republican.

Oh please - those who saw the debate know how exaggerated that claim is. More Mitt pumping! Why bring that to FR?

Newt also said that any of the GOP candidates would be an improvement over Obama.

I agree. He is following Reagan’s 11th Commandment and its appropriate. Attack Obama - ignore the others.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/11/gingrich-and-santorum-criticize-obama-on-constitution/

Republican presidential candidates Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum participated in the Granite State Patriot’s Constitutional Conversation Thursday night, where the two were not short on criticism of President Obama’s interpretation of the constitution.

“What’s the biggest constitutional failing of the Obama administration?” the moderator asked Santorum. The crowd laughed as Santorum scratched his head for a moment with a perplexed look.

“This is going to be a much longer debate now,” Gingrich said.

“We’ll let Newt go first,” Santorum said.

Gingrich paused and said, “Not understanding which country he’s president of.”

The crowd erupted with applause and gave the only standing ovation of the night to Gingrich’s comment. Santorum followed up by saying “Obamacare.”

So much for your FUNG!!!!

They did a strong job, led by Newt frankly. He can see through the media scumbags' games better than anyone else. And I think most other candidates have taken a lesson. The whole field has become much stronger in that regard.

Newt praised Romney in comparison to Obama, a perfectly justified response to a media scumbag question. It wasn't as if he endorsed him.

Exactly. No one could misinterpret that - unless they have an agenda. Geez, even the moderators got that one - it took the air out of their fantasy bubble.

Calling Mitt Romney the “Republican Frontrunner” is a double lie.
