The riot was reported to have 2,000 people (later it was said to be 5,000 to 7,000, but 2,000 was the most used statistic), and the vigil was reported to have 10,000 people. Both statistics, though, have no basis in reality. There were definitely way more than 2,000 people at the riot. The vigil 10,000 stat was almost certainly taken from when one of the speakers referred to there being 10,000 people there. The speech was prepared ahead of time, so it was obviously just a wild guess that the media ran with. Being at both, it’s hard to say which had more people. I’d say the vigil, but I can’t conclusively say. In any case, there was a blue-out in support of victims of child abuse that was attended by approximately 107,000. Not everyone participated in it (Nebraska fans still generally wore red), but the vast, vast majority of Penn State fans wore blue for this reason.
