Some public figures have labeled the Mormon church as a cult. Most recently, ABC News reported that Dallas Pastor Robert Jeffress applied such a label in an interview following a political gathering where Jeffress introduced a political rival to Mormon candidate Mitt Romney.
Use of such a term to describe Mormonism is highly offensive to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Cult carries the connotation of dangerous, even violent groups whose beliefs are irrational and whose practices are immoral and lawless (Koresh and the Branch Davidians, Heavens Gate, Aum Shinrikyo, and The Peoples Temple are all prominent examples) . The term cannot be applied to Mormons unless it is so broadly defined that its use could be applied to virtually any religious body.
Like racist language, the use of the word cult to describe a religion usually tells us very little about the religion, but a great deal about the person using the word. In short, it tells us only that the person using the label cult doesnt like the religion in question, or thinks it is illegitimate. Bryan Wilson, a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a noted sociologist of minority religions noted:

Then WHY are you in this thread?
Besides; I wasn't asking ANYTHING about 'scripture'; but what you thought about the things MORMON leaders have said.
No need to pick on me for pointing out what HISTORY has recorded.
I guess I can accept that; coming from you.
It sounds like you have your own inquisition going. That is evil, nothing else.
I speak from experience, once a Mormon (or other cultist) starts to engage in independent thinking, they leave. I know I did as have many of the other ex-mo’s I know. Very seriously, the best thing we can get them to do is to get them angry enough to try to prove us wrong, which is usually what leads to thinking for themselves, once that happens rather than them repeating the pat responses they are given, they end up leaving pretty quickly.
Pray that their eyes are opened like ours have been.
These folks still here posted this quote referenced quote during the last election cyle in a Romney debate and I set out to prove them wrong.
""Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet...When they can get rid of me, the devil will also go." (FLDS/LDS "Prophet" Joseph Smith, History of the Church, Vol. 6, p. 408, 409)
I was shocked to find it true, then EACH AND every crazy quote they posted that I checked, IN LDS PUBLISHED BOOKS, for the first time in my life turned out to be true.
Joe Smith, Brigham Young and their comtemporaries DID teach that Jesus was a SINNER, and POLYGAMIST, that the second coming would occur in 1891 (Like Harold Camping), that the atonement was unsufficent for some sins and only the spilling of the sinner's blood could "help" them, that Adam was GOD, that Joe Smith's re-translation of the bible was a fraud so the LDS sect doesn't use it to this day etc....And when I went to my stake president with honest questions, I saw the wicked wolf of mormonism come out from behind the sheep's clothing for the first time.
Mormonism is a cult. A full blown control by guilt to the point of suicide, works righteous heretical CULT.
Only by exposing their secrets to the GOOD VICTIMS who have been DECEIVED BY THE VISCIOUS LIARS who keep them trapped can we help pry them free.
I thank God for Freerepublic and the Christians here who pried me free. Not only that, but they immediately forgave me for the viscious blinded by lies things that I said about them here. I once was lost but now I'm found, was blind but now I see.
I'm thankful God used a post or two on FR to open your eyes to the HERESY OF MORMONISM - and even more importantly, to the TRUTH of the REAL JESUS CHRIST.
This is so very encouraging to read. I am so happy for both of you and the thousands like you. Almighty God will not mislead you when you seek Him in truth. Praise Him!!!!!!!!
Wow, what a testimony! Praise God for the people He puts in our path and uses to draw us to Him!
Sentinel’s awesome testimony is a great example of how God uses people for His means. The growth of the internet has led a lot of people out of Mormonism, many more than are joining anymore and that is very good news indeed.
The whole idea of a “Mormon anti-defemation league” is a joke especially considering the entire cult was founded on anti-Christian principles.
Galations 4:16 “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?”
The Mormons accuse those who are bold enough to speak the truth of being ‘hateful’ and ‘bigots’. No, we love them enough to show them that their theology is unbiblical and errant and that they follow a false church.
However, most LDS would rather cling to their Mormonism than really search for the truth. I was once there as well, and I thank God daily that He gave me the desire to know the truth even if it meant losing my faith in Mormonism.
It really is sad how the LDS are so blind. They go around spouting (like I did) how “Wonderful” the LDS church is and how converting was the ‘best thing they did’ when they really have no idea just how destructive and controlling the LDS church really is. They place their faith in men and an organization rather than Christ.
Sandy, if the LDS are Christians, and worship the same Christ then you don’t need Mormonism. If not, then you must choose between the Christ of Mormonism and the Christ of the Bible because they are not the same person. What benefits does the LDS church have that Christian churches do not? What is the real point in being LDS?
Wonderful testimony, Sentinel. Thank you for posting it.
Except for our respective backgrounds, what you said.
I can’t add anything that contributes to the impact of your comment except my concurrence as to its truth and veracity.
You do not have to believe in ANY scripture to see the logical proof of cult mind control in a people who will openly claim that Joe Smith was a prophet AND disregard his bible for the KJV.
WE are trying to help them out, what exactly is your purpose for being here ?
I suspect you know members who are generally nice folks, I also suspect you DO NOT KNOW evil wolf leaders nor witness the control tactics they use to keep their nicely producing sheep in line.
