Cult! A Classic False Claim
Mormon Defense League ^ | October 9, 2011 | Mormon Defense League

Some public figures have labeled the “Mormon” church as a “cult”. Most recently, ABC News reported that Dallas Pastor Robert Jeffress applied such a label in an interview following a political gathering where Jeffress introduced a political rival to Mormon candidate Mitt Romney.

Use of such a term to describe Mormonism is highly offensive to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “Cult” carries the connotation of dangerous, even violent groups whose beliefs are irrational and whose practices are immoral and lawless (Koresh and the Branch Davidians, Heaven’s Gate, Aum Shinrikyo, and The People’s Temple are all prominent examples) . The term cannot be applied to Mormons unless it is so broadly defined that its use could be applied to virtually any religious body.

Like racist language, the use of the word “cult” to describe a religion usually tells us very little about the religion, but a great deal about the person using the word. In short, it tells us only that the person using the label “cult” doesn’t like the religion in question, or thinks it is illegitimate. Bryan Wilson, a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a noted sociologist of minority religions noted:

When we Mormons were standing side-by-side with other Christians to pass Prop 8, no one ever condemned us to hell or called us “cult” members.

Then let me apologize; right NOW!!!

I'm a MORMON ...

Wherefore, we speak concerning the law that our children may know the deadness of the law; and they, by knowing the deadness of the law, may look forward unto that life which is in Christ, and know for what end the law was given. And after the law is fulfilled in Christ, that they need not harden their hearts against him when the law ought to be done away.

Sorry; but the SAME is in the Bible.

What got RESTORED?

Sigh...

MORMONism brings BACK the 'law' and enslaves with it.

We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

Even though I don’t support Romney ideologically I think Mormons raise their kids well and keep same values I remember from my youth that have fallen from fashion.

While in Utah last summer I found it clean, pretty, big families...like me...and happy God fearing folks ..polite.

I loved it...I could live outside the Salt Lake megapolis somewhere

so...we can disagree on doctrine and celebrate that we do share

never figured why some here are so upset over it all

which denomination here is most upset with LDS?

I’m southern baptist but we never much talked about ya’ll or Catholics either but I know Catholics here think folks like me were raised to hate them

not me...else I woulda hated my girls momma

Which two of the following are “demons”:

Pick one or both.

Either answer is correct.

Which two of the following are “demons”: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost?

What kind of a question is THAT supposed to be?

'CHRIST' said nothing...

Read it for yourself:

http://scriptures.lds.org/en/js_h/1/17#17

17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!
18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.
19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”
20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven.

And NEITHER is identified!

Where to start?

To bash you for apparently attending a 'feel good' 'christian' church?

For buying into Oprahism hook, line and sinker?

For not having much knowledge of the New Testement at all?

For not wanting to raise a ruckus in the temple?

For not contending for the faith once delivered to the saints?

Not tonight; it's late and I am sleepy...

But wait! Joey Smith, peepstone predator of married women false prophet DID rewrite the King James Bible to fabricate a prophecy of his 'coming in these latter days'. Doesn't that count for somethin'? ... Even the Devil wants to use what has already been written to fabricate his deceptions.

But wait! There's more! The Pearl of Great Price LDS inc 'scripture' writing has an interesting fictional origin also!

CONSERVATISM IS ABOUT TRUTH AND A BELIEF IN OUR CREATOR AND HIS WORDS OR INDICATIONS AS A GUIDEPOST TO REASONABLE HUMAN CONDUCT.

HMMmm...

I thought you'd understand.

Matthew 23
1. Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
2. "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
3. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.
4. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
5. "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;
6. they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;
7. they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them `Rabbi.'
8. "But you are not to be called `Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers.
9. And do not call anyone on earth `father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.
10. Nor are you to be called `teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.
11. The greatest among you will be your servant.
12. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
13. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.
14. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.
16. "Woe to you, blind guides! You say, `If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.'
17. You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
18. You also say, `If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.'
19. You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
20. Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
21. And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.
22. And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.
23. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
24. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
25. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
26. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.
28. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
29. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous.
30. And you say, `If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
31. So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.
32. Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers!
33. "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?
34. Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.
35. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
36. I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.
37. "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.
38. Look, your house is left to you desolate.
39. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, `Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' "

"what a nasty person you are.."

What you call "nasty", many of us admire. Elsie speaks truth with love to Mormons and always backs it up with verifiable, irrefutable facts. Elise cares about the immortal soul of Saundra and those like her who have fallen prey to the false teachings of JS. You, on the other hand, with your silence seem quite content in not rocking the boat and letting Mormons walk blindly and merrily into Hell.

When we Mormons were standing side-by-side with other Christians to pass Prop 8, no one ever condemned us to hell or called us “cult” members. Only after the victory - only after they didn’t need us anymore did some of them turn on us. That stinks to High Heaven.

Paranoid ravings. This thread started with a whine and denigration of FR, has devolved into the usual "testimony" phase and continues on with the "poor little mormons" persecution theme.

I suggest you go back and read your posts, Sandy and see it for yourself.

Does anyone see in this list from an lds site where tithing goes to humanitarian needs.
http://mormon.org/faq/purpose-of-tithing/
Interesting tithing is referred to as “the law” by the site, if you don’t obey the law do you go to jail, get a fine....or just lose you ability to be temple worthy?
How does the bishop who monitors your tithing (because it is the law) know you are obeying the law, unless you prove how much income you have - just asking.
