Cain Defamation Lawyer Hired to Monitor Accusations

Herman Cain, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, has hired a high-profile defamation lawyer to keep an eye on the sexual harassment accusations made public by two women this week.

Atlanta attorney Lin Wood told Reuters Thursday he was not hired to scare, intimidate or threaten anyone from making statements, but to monitor the accusations against Cain and respond accordingly.

Wood, a top libel and defamation lawyer, was hired on Monday morning when it became clear that Sharon Bialek was about to become the first of four women alleging inappropriate behavior by Cain to go public with her accusations.

"I would certainly at some point and time give him my legal evaluation of whether any of these particular statements are potentially actionable," Wood said

Wood said he was retained by Cain and not by his campaign. He said he feels strongly about "guilt by accusation" cases. "I have seen how it has devastated the lives of other clients of mine and I would hate to see it happen to Mr. Cain."

Right, I have seen that he’s had one high profile case, Jewell. Heck Edwards was the Best in his field too. My point is that Allred should never be poopooed even though she almost always looks hair-brained on TV. She is effective! I am not saying she is right or her clients are right, just EFFECTIVE and mean as a striped spider. There won’t be any law suits, that would be the worst for Cain no matter the final outcome. The last thing he needs is to keep this BS out front for months and months. Allred WILL do just that unless Cain can come up with real proof.

Seriously and I'm trying to be nice, but you are incredibly ill informed and it would serve you well to educate yourself a little before posting. Even a wiki search would show you Wood has had many high profile clients, such as the Ramseys and Condit.

And CAIN needs "real proof"? He is the one being accused and smeared with ZERO real proof.

Seriously man get some basic facts

Bulls**t. Anytime Allred gets involved it for her own personal gain off of other people’s misery. She’s a despicable, media-whore.

I think Bialek wanted Cain to remember her when she hugged him, but not for the sexual assault she claimed happened long ago (because it didn’t happen). I think it galled her that he didn’t remember her at all for the things she was probably partially truthful about - meeting her and her boyfriend at a work dinner, going to his private party later that night, etc. At that Tea Party event I think her hopes were to reestablish a connection with him knowing his star was on the rise and she could latch on in some way or the other. Failing that, since Cain didn’t remember her (why would he), she took the next opportunity which was when the other allegations broke - she would join the chorus as the star witness and cash in with her phony claims of assault. The timing was right for this theory as she was preparing for yet another bankruptcy and her live-in boyfriend was jobless and going broke also.

Newt is suddenly looking a lot better to voters. He does have a political history of economic growth and a balanced budget. Plus he can handle the media, remains respectful and draws cheers. His past seems less important to voters

He is only able to do that now because the fire isn't currently being directed at him. Newt is benefitting from the smear on Cain and the other guys like Perry getting loaded on as well. If he jumps ahead he will be an easy target

Correct! She’s a despicable, media-whore.

But that still does not take away from the undeniable fact she is EFFECTIVE.

Dear Bob:

My harrassment took place many years ago, at the start of my career, before Anita Hill. I did the only thing I could do - kept a wide berth from my harrasser and found a new position ASAP. And no, I wasn't offended over "silly" things like emails, jokes told in common, etc. Simply put, when I told my father what was going on and asked for his advice, he was ready to beat the guy to a pulp.

I saw the opposite side of this coin a decade ago when my former boss, a wonderful man who was old school but by no means a harrasser, was falsely accused. A great career ended before he even had a chance to defend himself.

I quit listening to Fox when that comes on. I turned it off when Rove was coming on to explain how Perry’s votes would go to Romney.

Are you crazy? Do you looking to justify them playing "victim"?

Here's the point: dems will play this card every time until someone slaps them down.

If Cain does not do this, it will be the only issue the press will care about. It will never disappear; it will show up in the first paragraph of his obituary years from now.

I would not expect that any lawsuit filed now could be resolved before the election, but as a demonstration of his innocence and outrage it would have a huge impact.

It would also cause the dem defamation industry to think twice.

In short, Cain's obliged to do this, not just for his campaign, but for the future of the conservative movement.

Call their bluff.

There needs to be another news channel.... 24 truth and nothing but the truth network. Fox started out fair and balanced, but now abuses that slogan.

As I said, only if he is absolutely certain he would win.

It would also cause the dem defamation industry to think twice.

Nonsense. Your idea of using this as a deterrent is without merit simply because defamation against a public figure is a very difficult case to win.

I have a life and I don’t spend my time talking filth and defending a sexual assaulter.

By the time Cain is done NO women, except FR groupies will vote for him. He’s lost 20 points among women in the last poll.

And the sink minds that support him will guarantee he loses.

A “sexual assaulter”... go proof?
“J’accuse” is not proof.

Impossible to win if you don't fight.

I don't agree that you need to be absolutely certain they can win. They need to calculate the effect on public perception.

Caine has to at least seem to be serious in his reply if he is to survive.

He has two choices: file some paper or get out of the election.

Apparently it was worth a years salary as a SEVERENCE to get rid of a pain in the ass serial accuser whose accusations were found to be baseless.

You sound a little sensitive. Perhaps you’ve had some experience you’d like to relate?
