Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.
The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.
But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.
One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

Was watching MSNBC’s O’Donnell’s coverage of this last night,,,Hannity ignored it. O’Donnel was actually doing a good job,,,until he brought his guest in. Michael Moore. They managed to drag Republicans into it and insinuated this whole mess was the fault of Republicans. Then they launched into a Rick Santorum bash fest.
I saw one article dated last April that talks about the investigation. I am sure that everyone in State College knew. Yet everyone allowed Sandusky on campus as late as last week.
A personal hero of mine, Hugh Thompson, was a 25 year-old warrant officer when he was flying over My Lai. He couldn't believe what he saw going on either, but he set his helicopter down and put a stop to it.
Hugh died in 2006 knowing that when he was put to the ultimate test of character, he did the right thing. Every breath Mc-Queer-y draws between now and his eventual death will be the breath of a known coward.
Joe knew that Sandusky was raping boys in Joe's shower room. Joe didn't stop it. Joe let it happen. He is part of the PSU homosexual boy-raping sex-ring whether he actively participated or not.
I don't think Paterno had anything to do with Sandusky's retirement package that gave him an office and access to the Lasch Football Building. I could be wrong on that. We shall see.
I don't think Paterno had anything to do with the relationship between Second Mile and PSU. Again, I could be wrong. We shall see.
I think when Paterno was told about the 2002 incident he informed people he thought would actually do the right thing regarding it. I don't believe he believed the boy was sodomized.
And maybe he even thought that there was not much point in contacting the police considering what happened in 1998.
The fact that the AG has specifically said the Paterno is NOT a target, unlike Spanier, reinforces this for me.
I’m sorry, I was under the impression he was fired because of his involvement, however tangible, to the homosexual rape of a child.
Am I mistaken? Or are you one of those so called conservatives that defends the homosexual agenda? Please clarify your position.
You’re being dense. Paterno admits he never reported the eyewitnessed child rape. He hasn’t been deprived of his liberty by the court, he’s been fired by the trustees. You are guilty of posting vacuous comments about something as serious as a child rape cover-up by leaders of a university.
I'd really like to hear your argument for that nonsense (although I doubt that I will).
Q:: if an older woman going after a younger man is called a cougar, then what is an older man going after a younger boy called?
A:: a Nittany Lion
Dad's advice to son (hypothetically speaking). Son, you got a big one. Go talk to Joe. Maybe you can get the WR coaching job out of this.
People should not forget the victims. I think this was hushed up because “winning is the only thing.”
Penn State including Joe Paterno said: "here are the keys to the university. Do what thou wilt"
Joe Paterno was, for all intents and purposes, the CEO of Penn State Football, Inc. If he wanted something to be done, it got done. He had the power to nip this in the bud, but he chose not to do so.
I don't think Paterno had anything to do with Sandusky's retirement package that gave him an office and access to the Lasch Football Building. I could be wrong on that. We shall see.
One word from Joe and Sandusky would have been in jail instead of continuing to rape boys in Joe's locker room.
I don't think Paterno had anything to do with the relationship between Second Mile and PSU. Again, I could be wrong. We shall see.
Joe was on the Second Mile board.
I think when Paterno was told about the 2002 incident he informed people he thought would actually do the right thing regarding it. I don't believe he believed the boy was sodomized.
OK. Even though the GJ said that McQueary told Joe what he had seen, let us say for the moment that Joe only knew that 'something sexual' happened. Are you excusing Joe for allowing Sandusky to continue doing 'something sexual' to little boys for years?
Why didn't he fire Sandusky? Why didn't he go public?
[The sooner hes out of the picture, the sooner the damage from this to the reputation of a fine university will abate.]
A univerity who protects a homosexual child rapist is not a “fine university.” Ped State deserves to have a damaged reputation. They’ve more than earned it.
From Skousen's 'Communist Goals'...
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."
Being an act of a homo, you can bet Sandusky will not get the same punishment a man would get for raping a little girl. Homos seeking out young boys is a dream all male queers seek. Never forget NAMBLA openly marched in many pride parades.
[Did he ever directly confront Sandusky about it, to even determine if he was guilty or not?]
The fact that Paterno could even stand the sight of Sandusky after what McQueary and the janitors had witnessed (which I have no doubt he was informed) tells me all I need to know about JoePa. Paterno could have put a stop to what was going on and chose not to.
