Penn State trustees fire football coach Joe Paterno and PSU president Spanier

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.

But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

No, YOU miss the point. They DID Inform those “up the chain”, as they were required to do. We just want them to be required, in retrospect, to do MORE... And now we want to punish thousands of people who were not involved in any bad acts or failure-to-report issues, all to punish those who did not have the foresight to do more than they were legally required to do nine years ago. How can that make sense to you?

This isn’t even close to what happened to the other schools. And with more coming out about it, and the cover up, it will get worse.

And how can you not see that this kind of thing will not be used in other areas of law and life a decade or two into the future. Hyper-reactions and emotionalism make for horrifyingly bad law, precedent, and history.

I’ve heard Greg Schiano’s name mentioned. He might be the one to do it.

Don’t bother. He’s convinced that hundreds of people across the state knew the full extent of Sandusky’s pedophilia and simply ignored it. You’re not going to talk any sense into him.

Nobody is defending the pederast,

You personally just defended a pedophile. You personally just insinuated that a seven year old victim (which we now know some of these kids were) is really post pubescent. I never said Paterno should get the same punishment as Sandusky. I do believe he didn't tell authorities all he knew and I absolutely believe that the concerted effort required to keep this from exploding earlier amounts to a conspiracy. I have been consistent in my assertion that all known people at Penn State who can be asserted to have known about this for years should be fired forthwith, and that the full investigative power of the law enforcement system should be brought to bear to determine what laws if any were broken and I believe this merits the maximum possible penalty.

I don't give a crap how much that pisses you off, flintsilver7

Never cared for Penn state or gave two cents of attention to the media branding him as a saint. I’m more of a PAC 10 and SEc fan and they have their own issues. but like you never thought this was coming down when rumors started circulating about investigations.

It’s sick and clearly the entire culture surrounding that program has been corrupted. The people there really have no idea how bad this is and that’s why I favor hell being rained down on their heads from outside sources even the federal government who I usually want to keep out. because clearly these people are so tied to the program their sense of ethics and morality has taken a decade long holiday. They can’t be trusted to clean that entire college out without pressure from the outside. I don’t even believe Paterno would be gone if the Governor who started this investigation before his recent election hadn’t gone to have a little talk with the trustee’s today.

No, my friend, that is NOT a “fact”... And the fact that you insist that your hyperbole is factual should tell you something. I’ll bet you my cars title against yours that there were plenty of janitors and others who had no idea what was happening.

He founded the charity thirty-four years ago?? My God! That means he’s probably been doing this for most of that time. We’ll probably never know how many kids’ lives he’s ruined.

bump - this story and apparently the number of victims is growing exponentially. I don’t think i’ve ever seen anything like this. Horrifying.

Hyper-reactions and emotionalism make for horrifyingly bad law, precedent, and history.

Which is exactly HOW this pedofile was enabled by Paterno and PSU. Did you or did you NOT read the grand jury report?

Yes. Like stop the rapist.

What would you do if a student came to you and said your best friend was raping a boy in the restroom. Wait till the next day and inform the principle and then merrily watch with no concern as your best friend continued to hang around and 'play' with little boys?

I’m hearing Urban Meyer as likely for Penn State. More so than Ohio State which may be too much like the SEC for him.

What amazes me is that everyone is focused on JoPa and the admins... Compare the number of times they are mentioned compared to the actual perpetrators name

Talk about lack of criminal & cultural comprehension. You're one of our best candidate-exemplars.

Sandusky will be tried before a jury of his peers. His a criminal legal prosecution.

Penn State coaches & admins had a few other "bars" to be accountable to:

The first one was the "bar of ethics," which since Sandusky retired in '99 -- can no longer be held accountable to:

NCAA Bylaw 2.4: The Principles of Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, student-athletes, coaches, and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifest not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program.

Penn State's athletic program and their admins utterly "flunked" this bar exam. They did not lionize honesty and responsibility; instead some chose to "lionize" the spirit of Alfred Kinsey, who facilitated child sexual abuse via the Indiana Univ. studies. You'll note how Indiana Univ. officials have covered up the child abuse in Kinsey's studies for over 50 years now! Hence, the Big 10 is the pedophile conference of the world!

On top of that, indeed the "bar of public opinion" kicked in. So what? A Democratic Congressman was elected to office to represent Utah in 1898...but grassroots America found out he (B.H. Roberts) had married his third simultaneous wife after the Mormons said they would do a turn-around on polygamy. 28 banners with 7 MILLION signatures were delivered to that 1898 Congress, which then sent Roberts packing back home.

What's wrong with grassroots America speaking to the decision-makers? Or do you prefer that we be censored?

The fact that the families did not come forward until the news wagons were out front should tell you something.

Wow! Such cultural ignorance! Either you don't understand State College and JoePa as the cultural idol there -- and the risks one takes in taking on such a "god" -- or you have a flight of reality going on. Even worse, what? You think these teens & children should "come forward" into the limelight. Wow! How insensitive can you possibly be to these victims?

You reflect well the "all about me and my identity" culture.

In the Grand Jury report. The janitors observed Sandusky late at night with little boys in the showers but were afraid to report it for fear of losing their jobs.

Look back in this thread. I have said nothing to defend the act, and yet I've been called some pretty nasty things, and threatened with zotting (or whatever the proper verb is). What does that say to you? Seriously, I'd like an answer. It's important.

(and to my credit, I've managed to hit "delete" before hitting "post" when I replied with some of my own nasty insinuations, LOL)

On another thread, I mentioned how, in the last few years of his life, I came to know and develop something of a friendship with Hugh Thompson. Hugh is remembered by few people. In 1968, when Hugh was three years younger than McQueary was when he witnessed Sandusky raping a youngster and ran away, Hugh found himself as a helicopter pilot over a little Vietnamese village called My Lai. Hugh witnessed the ongoing atrocities, and at the risk of his reputation, career, and indeed, his life, stepped in and intervened.

When Hugh later testified in front of a closed session of congress, he himself was threatened with court martial and later received any number of threats. He never wavered, and was only recognized for having done the right thing decades later.

While he died in 2006 in some relative degree of obscurity, he had exhibited more courage, honor and heroism before his 26th birthday than McQueery, Paterno, Curley or any of the other so-called adults in this sordid mess could ever hope to know.

I was once told that the difference between a coward and a hero is the direction they run. McQueery, Paterno, Curley, Spanier and all the other so-called adults in this sorded mess have shown the world what they are, and deserve everything they have coming.
