I remember following the DA Gricar story when it was unfolding. The NY Times covered it pretty well at the time. I remember that there was one mobbed up guy that he had prosecuted that was getting some attention.

And as bad as this seems now, when the made-for-tv movie about this comes out, every soccer mom from Anchorage to Tallahassee will then know about it and that's when he and Penn State will truly be baked.

I’ll tell you what, in addition to the Gricar angle, is not getting enough attention: the different way that Portland and Sandusky were treated. Somone oughta take a good, hard look at that. And if the Obama admin had any info on this, which is why Spanier didn’t get Arne Duncan’s job.

There was a similar situation at Baylor when Dave Bliss was the basketball coach.....he covered up information about the murder of one of his players...because he was afraid of what else the investigators would find out about his cheating program, when they started investigating the murder....and I suspect now that’s what has been in play regarding Sandusky’s behavior.

Yep...I sure remember the Bliss thing. You raise a very interesting point about the (possible) Sandusky parallel.

Maybe that’s unfair, but “where the boys are” is where the perverts are going to be.

Kind of like when I see a male Kindergarten teacher.....it's just not right.

Well of course pedophiles are going to seek out places and positions where they have access to children, especially troubled children.

As my father observed: Normal people HATE kids!

This scum bag, besides disgracing PennStatePedo football, has brought shame on anyone of actual GOOD character who actually want to help troubled young people.

Imagine the betrayal, troubled young man thinks FINALLY someone out there is going to treat me kind, pay attention to me, someone I can trust and .... no, no - they just want to f*ck me like the rest of the lousy world.

"Sickening" is right. I wonder if Redux would defend David Cash as well?

Welcome to Penn state:

“Our instructional mission includes undergraduate, graduate, professional, and continuing education offered through both resident instruction and online delivery. Our educational programs are enriched by the cutting edge knowledge, diversity, and creativity of our faculty, students, and staff.”

Diversity and creativity of our staff, you can say that again.

Joe Paterno would have a half lame leg to stand on if the 2002 incident was the only one where Sandusky was in a shower with a male child - he admitted to showering with male children in 1998!

Two events within four years, and nine years later the perv is still running around your campus?

That deserves the ultimate censure. The guy is scum. PennStatePedo football is scum.

As my father observed: Normal people HATE kids!

That puts me in mind of a funny comment by Florence King: "I could never molest a child because in order to molest a child you have to be in the same room as said child."

I knew a guy who didn’t like kids.

He said he didn’t even want to see them getting bigger, he wanted to see them getting smaller - as in - smaller in the rear view mirror!

Penn State is gonna get hit with the biggest lawsuit of this nature ever. And they're gonna pay every penny.

this will be lawsuits plural.

And now that there's articles showing Sandusky ran camps all over the state...how many more victims state-wide?

yes he did, not saying he couldn’t/shouldn’t have done more, but it was not his place to do so .. the beauracrats running the college are the ones who should have fired and pressed charges

Where does responsibility begin & end here?

McQueary can claim he did his "duty" by meeting first with Paterno, and then with Schultz & Curley.

Except that McQueary didn't interrupt the assault; didn't call police that night or that weekend; and didn't seem to ever follow up. Why? And why don't we have Paterno, Curley & Schultz encouraging McQueary to follow up when Sandusky was never arrested?

Paterno can claim he did his "duty" by meeting Schultz & Curley at his house within 1.5 days of the attack on the boy @ school.

Except that Paterno didn't seemingly follow-up at some eventual point...either not being able to use his considerable sphere of influence to encourage McQueary to go to the police -- or encourage his administrators to do the same.

Schultz' attorney, per an AP story, is now claiming that Schultz & Curley gave the info to their superiors. I'm assuming that includes pro-gay rights Spanier, a Democrat.

Except that they should have realized they are covered under mandating reporting rules -- and for some reason, they saw fit to lie during the Grand Jury investigation...and did they, too, pass on their "encouragemenet" of McQueary to come forward?

You see what we have here so far. All passing the buck up within the chain of command. Next, we'll probably hear from Spanier that perhaps he passed the info on to the Board of Trustees, and that he's free of responsibility, too.

The fact that Sandusky was running camps on two other Penn State campuses (Erie & Harrisburg) + many others -- all the way thru 2008 -- also helps us focus here. Or are you telling us that NONE of these Penn State coaches & admins knew Sandusky was creating new 4th grade & up contacts all around the state of Penn?

What? They didn't "care" about that? Or were they just protecting his "sexual orientation" -- as college policies mandate these days?

Narcissists always write themselves a pass. And this is also a guy thing. Hero can do no wrong, and if you criticize him you're a neurotic beeyatch. (It was the mothers who were bringing a lot of these complaints.)

Gay-friendly Penn State. This is what Rush was talking about yesterday when he made a comment that if said what was really going on, it would end his career.

It's taboo to associate pedophilia with homosexuality.

all that because a boy told his father a story and his father told Joe a story, and Joe told the story a father told him that his son told to Curley & Schultz who should have investigated .........

and so many of you are ready to hang a good man

all that because a boy told his father a story and his father told Joe a story,

ALL: Just listen to this poster who has yet to mention the victims involved. An eyewitness report from an extremely credible person becomes just "a story."

Your framing is pathetic.

Joe told the story a father told him that his son told to Curley & Schultz...

More pathetic framing. Read the Grand Jury Presentment.

Both McQuearys came over to Joe's house the day after. So, no, it wasn't "a story" ONLY relayed from son to father to Joe. Joe heard the story firsthand...just like Curley and Schultz also (eventually) heard the story first hand from the younger McQueary.

If Paterno didn't think the eyewitness report was credible, he could have simply told the McQuearys to just go direct to Curley & Schultz & the authorties and leave him out. He could have washed his hands of the matter, not thinking it was credible.

But note, he didn't do that. Paterno FIRST called to have Schultz & Curley meet with him at his house, which he did the Sunday after the Friday assault. (McQueary wasn't at that mtg)

Paterno gave the account credibility. Having done that, he assumed "responsibility"; he conveyed he believed the report to be true. His meeting with Schultz & Curley proves that.

Besides, what if the victim was your son? What if you found out that Paterno had knowledge of the crime within hours of it, and had a face-to-face report of it in well under a day? What if the victim was "reviolated" that Saturday night -- the night of the DAY the McQuearys met with Paterno?

How would that sit with you -- knowing that Paterno sat on the info for 24 hours before passing it on? Knowing that another assault could have been prevented.

What's worse is that Paterno sat on the info for YEARS...almost a decade! All the while he knew Sandusky had these camps thru '08...and continued to have access to kids thru the Second Mile Foundation (thru the Foundation linkages, the Foundation sports camps, and thru Sandusky Associates sports camps run all over PA).

And Paterno still sat on his hands.

You know, if the KNitKinsey Lionizers were down late in the game, Paterno would have his offense respond accordingly. With urgency. But you're telling me what he knows on the field...when it comes to sensing the urgent off the field action that is needed, he is what? Dunce? Senile? What then?

If he saw one of his players shagging a kid in the showers, what? The team just needs to have a series of team & administrative "huddles"...going from the non-speaking captain to the speaking captain, who needs to talk to his asst coach, who needs to talk to the head coach, who needs to talk to the AD, who needs to talk to the VP, who needs to talk to the Prez, who needs to talk to the Board of Trustees? All the while the player is out shagging more kids because they keep giving the player ongoing access to their facilities over days, weeks, and years???

The "P" in PSU stands for "Pathetic"...they flunk in basic Humanitarian Ethics 101.

Here, I'll give you a lesson on what to do in this situation: Call 9/11 or interrupt the perp yourself! And if someone comes to you with what you regard as "a story," have them call the police then and there.

There. Simple, isn't it? But now that we see why Paterno & Co. lacked basic common sense -- not following up on this long-term; hence, he deserves what he gets.

How many times did JoePa tell his players to "go out there and give 110%!" "Go the extra mile." "Give it all you've got." "Leave it all on the field." 2000 times? 4000? 10,000?

For a football game.

But when it came to child rape? "I did the bare minimum legally required of me." Despicable. And it's the obvious reason he has to now resign.

I’m a fan of Joe Pa, but I’m glad he retired. Wish it could have been under different circumstances.

I can see how it’s difficult to believe a close associate was such a monster. That said...

I also can see how easy it would (or should) be for a witness to such a crime to pick up a baseball bat and explain to the perp a couple of things:

A) that it’s not okay to do that, and

B) that he won’t be doing it — ever again. To anyone, anywhere, anytime.
