He’s an excellent attorney. Cain couldn’t have sought better help to steady his ship amid the controversy that threatened to push it off to a dangerous political sandbar. You can see Cain picks superbly qualified people.

I’m convinced he would do the same as President.

Yes, he seems to be. Unfortunately, none of this is happening in a court of law, where the various accusations would not stand up. They would not even be admissible. They have not been under oath and his accusers have not been subjected to cross examination. Neither, for that matter, has Mr. Cain.

Things may eventually be resolved favorably to Mr. Cain in a court of law and there may well be appellate proceedings. However, that will be too late to do Mr. Cain -- or the country -- any good vis a vis the 2012 elections.

Unfair? Of course.

Mr. Cain has fumbled his handling of this matter, as he has also done in his handling of the abortion issue.

I like Mr. Cain very much and had hoped that he would be the Republican nominee. Had he consistently engaged his brain before opening his mouth -- not to fashion politically acceptable obfuscations but to tell his side clearly and truthfully -- he would remain a viable candidate, likely to win next year's election. Now, I am afraid that he is toast.

I shall try to keep an open mind and hope for the best. However, at this point I see no reason to expect it.

And that’s the key to a successful presidency.

1. You can’t win on defense.

2. You must pick capable and loyal* people.

*to the philosophical goals of your presidency.

For me, the most important quality a president can have besides good decision making skills is the ability to surround himself with a cabinet that knows what it’s doing.

But then, that only demonstrates their decision making skills.

And I’m with you on this one. This is a very good opportunity to see how the man rolls.
